A lot of bands have gotten softer, with a huge swath of 70's bands going from guitar rock to ballads in the early 80's.'
Styx
REO
Foreigner
Journey
Chicago (sorta)
Heart

But have any bands gotten harder over the years?

Even Green Day and Metallica have gotten softer.

Pantera. Most people forget they were a glam band/hair metal band in the 80s until Phil Anselmo took over vocals on Power Metal in 1988. Then in 1990 they completely shifted over and became what we knew modern Pantera with Cowboys from Hell which was their 5th album. That album and 1992 Vulgar Display of Power were so good. Hell even Far Beyond Driven was awesome. Those 3 albums were a big part of my high school years from 1990 to 1994.

Pantera started as a hair-metal band and eventually turned very heavy.

The Beatles went from "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" to "Helter Skelter." And one of the heaviest tracks on their last album was literally (sub)titled "She's So Heavy."
Simple questions deserve long-winded answers that no one will bother to read.

Riverside - started prog-rock, moved more to prog-metal by their album Anno Domini High Definition. Though they have gone back to more prog-rock now

Hexvessel - started as psychedelic rock, thier most recent album is black metal without the harsh vocals

Started out Punk Rock but by Battle Maximus they were straight up Metal... then Brockie died. :(
I'm an artist at what I do. I fuel the fire, watch it burn, and laugh all the while.
Rush went from 80s synth rock to heavier stuff from Counterparts and beyond. Headlong Flight in 2012 is still pretty solid -

I thought about that, but that doesn't really count to me since it was more of an experiment and less of a musical shift. They recorded Hey Jude and Let it Be around the same time, thus staying softer.

Many of them have put on a few pounds over the years. But I don't think any of them got noticeably heavier. They have all stayed in fairly decent shape.
