I mean from a book readers perspective there was so much that had to be left out to even make it work for tv that it was already kind of a joke from very early on. Missing characters, missing stories, characters merged together, ages changed, and long drawn out complicated stories that just got reduced to simplistic barely noticeable substories.
With that being said I still thought as far as tv goes it was a decent show if you just treat it entirely separately from your book knowledge and just roll with it for the entertainment value and the wonderful set pieces.
I thought the first season was really well done before the story starts introducing more characters and lands and inevitably gets more complicated. The first season took pages of dialogue straight out of the books and did well. As far as everyone always hating the final season the show was off the rails from like season 4 on. Again you just had to roll with it.
Overall I thought some of the casting was great and I loved seeing my favorite characters come to life in Tyrion and Sandor Clegane. I thought a few characters were off but I dont think it was bad casting or acting but more that they just couldnt properly convey their character as a lot more nuanced and gray neither showing to be good or bad like the book.
Basically I still think as a show its pretty good. I just rewatched it a month ago. Also watched both seasons of House of the Dragon. I think the less complicated overarching study in that with less stuff involved helps the focused narrative.
Also the set pieces, seriously fucking great. I know a shit ton of the show is digitally made but fuck it looks so good. Really enjoyable to watch and comes out looking very fucking good on my display.
So yeah I know people are still pissy about this but I went into it expecting to be disappointed and let down as a book fan and came out of it with a actually that was better than I expected and it doesnt bother me.
This. I considered the show a dumpster fire from the moment
they butchered the Dorne plot
, which I think was in season 4. It went to shit
long
before season 8, casuals just didnt know any better.
