After 23 years, one of the longest-running sports talk shows is coming to an end. The final episode will air on May 23. I used to watch the sports talk power hour of Around The Horn and Pardon The Interruption every weekday when I got home from school. Tony Reali and the various sports journalists he would have on the show were a big part of my childhood, always entertaining me after I got home from school and helping me become the sports fan I am today. Even though I haven't been watching it as much as an adult, I still catch it every once in a while, and it's still as fun as it was back when I would watch it after school. I knew it had to happen eventually, but I'm sad to see it go.

Any other sports fans sad to see ATH go? Who was your favorite panelist on the show, and why was it Woody Paige?

I also used to watch it after school almost routinely during my high school days over a decade ago.

I remember when Twitter first started and I followed Woody Paige and he followed me back for some reason.

It had its moment, yet talking heads rambling around topics instead of actual discussion is passe.
Dang, I used to love that show. I always wanted to be on it one day.

That was always something you just had to sit through to get to Pardon The Interruption.

No fucking way fr? That's Tony Reali's bby also they became more inclusive and less about yelling at each other. Anyone remember Tony Mariotti?

Also I like PTI but ppl gonna trash that show too b/c "ESPN"
Today's the same as ever.
Eventually ESPN will be nothing but Seinfeld reruns.

May 23rd. I wrote that down on a napkin. I liked a lot of the old timers. Such as Bill Plaschke, Tim Coliwshaw, Jackie MacMullan always brought it. I saw some newer ones too. Some good people. Lyles Jr. Sarah Spain was on there haha whatever happened to her.

Unless they feel like First Take or some other whatever show is better. I feel like the Around the Horn was a stronger brand than ever. I just stopped watching b/c I stopped caring about most things.
Today's the same as ever.
I actually strangely care a lot about this I even saw a bit where Tony R was choking up some on X.
Today's the same as ever.
stat boy show has come to an end
As long as PTI is still around, while this loss does suck it isn't devastating.

I was always more of a PTI guy myself.

Maybe Tony Reali can show up on PTI again he used to be on there back in the day a lot ah dammit. I am sure I have some rare good cop bad cop screencaps Or heck here's a Tony Reali report card I should be able to find on youtube....we'll see if I do.

Today's the same as ever.
I thought this show alongside PTI was long gone. Lol

Is the old man from PTI still working there?

Yea basically. I've seen Frank Isola and ocassionally Pablo Torre. Either Tony or Mike could have been gone for long stretches.

Tony also finally got out of his attic occasionally and visited the studio

This also won't mean much, but I found Urinating Tree has a reddit as he switched from angry game reviews to sports takes. (I knew this already) But he still uses that name. He posted about this an hour ago. Also urinating tree I guess was too good of a brand to give up.

I am shell-shocked by this news. Seems like the show was too much hassle to keep going it did run during the pandemic at times. Sure there is some silver lining here, but uhh some old yt.

Sad news. Hard to catch because if the time it's on though.

MAJOR stuff breaking tonight. I already texted a old friend about this, we'd always talk about what we saw on Around the Horn. Just a really old PTI.

OK FInally I'll show an epic comeback with Woody Paige! This show will be missed and has no reason to go away. What show do they have now is a better platform than this other than they say Tony R you can go back to PTI and take over a spot when Tony K moves on.

Definitely loved the show back in the day 15 years or so when I was in school still. Very entertaining watch and usually a solid list of panelist. Sad to see it go even if I haven't watched in forever.
We're a forest of lives, but we grow tall and wide.
We'll never be cut down.
Bump. I'm glad I'm not the only one here who thought of ATH as appointment after-school viewing as a kid.

Dan LeBatard had Reali on his show yesterday and it was a really good interview. Reali did get a bit emotional during it.

He's still a joy to watch and listen to, so if Reali wants to keep his career going, I'd love to see that happen any way possible.

I watched Around the Horn at the start and for the first few years. Never liked it nearly as much as PTI and honestly never thought it would last. I only tuned in because of Tony Reali who was "Stat Boy" on PTI before that.

PTI is the one that will hurt when it is gone and by being gone I mean when it isn't Tony and Mike. On the rare occasions when they are both gone and it is like Pablo and Mina I can't watch it. So if the PTI show stays around with different people I won't watch. To me PTI is Tony and Mike and I have been watching that since the start in 2001 at just 25 years old

PTI is definitely great too, and I'll be sad when it's gone. But for me (and I know I'm in the minority with this opinion) ATH was the more fun half of their afternoon power hour when I was watching it.

And not to get away from ATH too much but I really liked the show Dan Le Batard had, Highly Questionable. Personally I just like Dan and I liked when he was on ESPN and would guest on other shows.

The GOAT show of ESPN though was NFL Primetime in the 90s on Sunday night before the Sunday night football game. Chris Berman and Tom Jackson at their best. Best music ever too and SVP still uses that music sometimes for Sportscenter highlights for football at the end of the night.

Highly Questionable was a lot of fun too, plus Dan LeBatard is one of my favorite people in sports journalism. I still remember the year Dan gave his Baseball Hall of Fame ballot to Deadspin and let Deadpin's readers decide who he would put on his ballot that year, because, and I quote: "I always like a little anarchy inside the cathedral we've made of sports."

In reminiscing about old ESPN shows, I actually just sent this text to a group of friends in the last week:

Best part of baseball on ESPN was the early 2000s and Baseball Tonight. Karl Ravich hosting with some combo of Buster Olney, Tim Kurkjian, Jayson Stark, Rob Neyer, John Kruk, Brian McRae, and Peter Gammons.

That was my show. Back in my early 20s when I could name the starting roster on most teams and was super into fantasy baseball. At night, Id just throw on BBTN and watch it for an hour or two as I unwound. Back before smart phones had whittled my attention span down to zero. Fun times.

UTree was a game reviewer? Huh. I've only known him for his sports content. Makes sense that his sportsball videos are full of semi obscure video games music.
What is Tony Reali gonna do? 23 years for that quirky little show and all the riches that went with it. What a life.

We don't know yet. Reali did mention in an interview that he has a "dream job" in TV though, if it were to open up:

If Scott Hanson really does leave NFL Network for NBC like rumors are saying could happen, Reali taking over Redzone would be pretty cool.

Last I knew he was accused of domestic assault which Is never good. This was very long ago. Like I care to follow all of his story but no one talks about him so well *shrugs* I bet yas an figure it out.

Around the Horn did start as a more combative show. Him and Woody Paige would go at it a lot like they really hated each other. Nobody seemed to like Bill Plaschke.

The show shifted into I think a good debate show but it wasn't just screaming and attacks, much like how First Take or those shows can be. Seemed like Around the Horn would last forever by that point.

I also liked some crossover into PTI heh.
