Were you able to experience this yourself, or was it spoiled for you?
Well I was in the U.S. Navy at the time and bought it on release. I only knew a few other guys on the ship playing it and I never got the Internet until I got home in 1999 so nothing was spoiled for me because I was in an environment where that was extremely unlikely.

Experienced it for myself

Id played (and loved) FF4 & FF6 on SNES. Didnt have a PS1 and didnt even know FF7 was a thing until a friend of mine was renting it. He knew I loved the games, so he asked me for help on something. Went over and was floored by the game. He was in the Nibelheim mansion at the time. He wanted help cracking the safe.

Got a PS1 not long after for the sole purpose of getting FF7. Didnt really have anything spoiled.

I honestly can't recall but probably not; although I was really young when I first played it so I just wasn't as good at keeping up with news anyway.
back when i played it i didn't have an internet so i got to experience it without being spoiled so it hit me on the feels

Played FF7 for the first time last year, so it had been spoiled like 20 years prior lol

I played ff7 for the first time on my PS3. I assume you're talking Aerith's death?

Somehow it wasn't spoiled, even though I was very late to the party lol

Kinda weird in hindsight how there was zero chance that it didn't happen but video games had conditioned us to believe it couldn't anyway.

End of disk one was getting introduced to the world map after leaving the city, I believe.

Do you mean wed been conditioned that main characters couldnt die in video games? Because if so, just in Final Fantasy games to that point

FF2 - A ton of people die

FF4 - Rydia, Edward, Yang (twice) and Cid all seemingly die, and Tellah actually does die

FF5 - Galuf dies

FF6 - Shadow can die (it can be prevented though)

Started playing final fantasy 7 at christmas in 1997. Before I even touched the game the only things I ever knew about it is the guy on the pre-order shirt looks cool (I got the shirt from toys are r from pre-ordering or just being a early adopter for the game I believe. I think my dad bought it for me close to it's release but just put the game away till' x-mas. I still have that cloud shirt, lol) the commercials that would air during WWF and just randomly glancing through it's strategy guide when I would be at the store.

Yep, experienced all the story beats going into the game blind. I didn't even get aerith's ultimate limit break because I didn't quite understand how learning limit breaks worked for a good bit. Completely missed both yuffie and vincent too. There was a certain point where I just flat-out decided to start completely over and thus I left that first playthrough of the game abandoned.

My life as a jrpg gamer is kind of weird......like, I have played a shit ton across the NES, SNES, gameboy, genesis, sega CD, and then PS1. Yet I did a lot of stupid shit, lmao. I specifically remember my first time playing final fantasy 3 (6) and FF7 being way harder than they needed to be because I ran......a lot. Zozo in FF6 was like, stupid hard to kid me because I was broke and thus could barely afford equipment and probably missed majority of the great equipment you can find (I think I missed edgar's chainsaw).

Lost number in final fantasy 7? (when I did go back and try to get vincent)......he fucked me up something serious, lol. Took me like half a day playing before I finally passed that. You don't even want to see my original shining force 2 save file (which the game deleted by now anyway.....this game's save battery was terrible).......yeah, one super leveled peter while everyone else is dogwater.

My older brother used to laugh at a lot of my rpg fails, but by the time I was 15 in 1998 my brain evolved from rpg derp to rpg competent or something like that and I surpassed him.

Well, maybe I should have said me instead of us. It was my first FF. Anyway, at the time, 2 and 5 hadn't been localized.

Neither. I wasn't spoiled and I haven't experienced it.
How can the moon landing be real if the moon isn't real?
The original IGN walkthrough from after release said something like "we won't spoil what happens before the fight, but just mentally prepare yourself for the most emotional moment we've seen in a games so far." It was one of my theories, but didn't think it would go as far as it did.

It's still up there, BTW.

Ending of MGS3, beginning and ending of TLoU and that one spoiler in FF7 are probably my top three.

Though on the other side of the emotional spectrum, it was Yakuza 3's Tamashiro who taught me I am not a good person, lol.

I didn't get around to playing it until a decade later, so that part was spoiled for me. I hadn't seen video of it though, so still got to experience it somewhat fresh.

Got it spoiled by the most unlikely(?) of places.

Although it holds a place in my brain because of a certain website that I don't think I can talk about but used to come up a lot in relation

Because of my love of strategy guides I was spoiled.

went in completely blind. my cousin who loaned me the game did say something big will happen at the end of disc 1, but he didn't say when disc 1 ends or gave any clue about what happens
?
A guide on this site actually spoiled it for me, heh
On va les avoir.
Huh, so end of disk one was that far in?

Wow I misremembered.

Wait what was the point of the third disk again (4th on PC apparently, though one was just the install disk)?

I honestly don't remember if it was spoiled for me or not. I never really cared about spoilers; I'm more about the journey than the destination when it comes to RPGs.

It pretty much just exists for the final cinematics, I think.

In fact, that's probably true of the second, too. As in, without those FMVs, I'm pretty confident the game would have fit on one disk.

Playtime and dialog don't matter. A second of FMV is probably more data than all of Midgar.

It's the same reason FF8 disc 4 had to lock the cities out, since they had to put in all the FMVs.

Yeah I played it long after it came out, so I knew it was coming. That scene was the worst kept secret in gaming.

My brother tried to spoil it for me, deliberately and maliciously, and was very annoyed to discover that I was already further through the game than he was.
Yeah I played it 2009 or 2010 or so. It was basically Titanic status at that point. However theres a difference between knowing that happens and experiencing it. And when you experience it, it still holds emotional weight due to the time spent with her in the game up until that point
On the PAL version theres a picture on the back of the case where Cloud lays Aeris on the water. I figured it out from seeing that

I bet writers HATE marketers for this kind of thing.

I don't even watch trailers anymore, if it's something I know I'm already interested in, because marketing departments have zero respect for spoilers.
