I've asked before on various occasions, and having worked in retail myself, know that there can absolutely be something someone is looking for that is in the back and not on the shelves. But the customer has to understand that the employee could be asked the same question numerous times a day and know with certainty that it's not in the back and refrain from asking "Could you please check anyway?"
That usually never happened for me because I would explain very well the issue and usually give them a timeframe of when the product will be coming in. Usually always met with an okay, thank you.
