Being invulnerable while holding a button is easier than being invulnerable with a timed action. There's a reason PCR's easiest counter is greatshield poking.
In DS1 you can just outright facetank everything and not have to roll OR block with heavy armour
It teaches bad habits for later though, like trying to tank AOE, grab, and frenzy attacks instead of moving slightly away from them. All the games are designed very similarly, so the sooner you learn the fundamentals and what to watch out for the better.
