Help me find a story I once read

This was probably read back in the 90s.

The book was a random collection of short horror stories by mostly no name authors.

The one I'm trying to remember was like the 2nd or 3rd entry from the beginning and probably not more than 10 pages or so.

The story goes as follows....

There was a happy married couple with a single child.

Tragedy happened one day though when they all were on a lake.

I think they were in a small boat or canoe.

The little boy somehow fell in the water and the father jumped to his rescue.

He held him up above the waters to save his life, but ended up drowning himself.

Ever since then, the mother greatly resented the child since the husband was her only true love.

Over time, she would constantly abuse the child out of resentment.

Like any time he would try and take a bite to eat at the dinner table, she would bang " pots and pans " together, scaring him to death.

He soon learned by association that would happen every time so I think he stopped eating.

I think she painted glow in the dark junk in his bedroom, so ghostly apparitions would appear at night.

She made the child completely and totally dependent upon her alone.

Then one night, in front of him, she slit her throat from " ear to ear ".

The kid went nuts.

Then some time later the sheriff arrived.... only to find that the child was acting like a wild " rat " or " mouse " because his only sense of protection came from his mother, and now she's gone.

That's about all I can remember.

I know it's not much but I'm hoping for a miracle on this. :)

Asking here since I don't know how to use AI.

That actually was going to be my suggestion. There is a subreddit devoted to this particular issue and it's been helpful to me.

Potential Anthologies to Explore
  1. AHH! That's What I Call Horror: An Anthology of '90s Horror
  2. This anthology features fourteen horror stories set during the 1990s, crafted by various authors. Given its focus on the '90s era and inclusion of multiple short stories, it's a promising collection to investigate.
  3. The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum
  4. While this is a standalone novel rather than a short story, it delves deeply into themes of child abuse and psychological trauma. If the story you're recalling had a particularly intense and disturbing narrative, this novel might resonate with those memories.
  5. The Frightfully Short Story Collection
  6. This collection offers a mix of scary short stories, which might include the tale you're trying to find. Its variety of narratives makes it a potential match.
  7. 99 Horror Stories
  8. As the title suggests, this anthology comprises 99 horror stories. With such a vast array, there's a chance the story you're seeking is among them.

Seems quite good of an appeal to look at.

Might have to hit the local library or sail some seas for this.

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum
While this is a standalone novel rather than a short story, it delves deeply into themes of child abuse and psychological trauma. If the story you're recalling had a particularly intense and disturbing narrative, this novel might resonate with those memories.

Worth a shot I guess, and I do like childhood trauma stories.

The Frightfully Short Story Collection
This collection offers a mix of scary short stories, which might include the tale you're trying to find. Its variety of narratives makes it a potential match.

Nice find.... The full book wasn't all that dramatic in appearance so something simple like this does have promise.

99 Horror Stories
As the title suggests, this anthology comprises 99 horror stories. With such a vast array, there's a chance the story you're seeking is among them.

At just an average of 10 pages a piece per story, the book would have weighed an immense ton.

Might be a good read and I will try and get this as well just for funsies.

I emailed myself your full post and will follow up on all of these tomorrow.

My one concern though is that it might never have went digital.

But yeah, thank you!

If anything hits, I'll gift any game of your choice. :D

I was looking for an expression recently and no tools and not even TOMT could really help (someone on TOMT was able to find it eventually but CE found it much earlier).

A couple possible ideas (probably not any of them though)

at at the bottom it lists other books like this.

Ooh....

I think perhaps the collection of short stories in the book had one by Edgar Allen Poe.

I was quite into him back in the day and that's probably how I found this.

The short story would have definitely been Morella .

His insanity of thinking that his wife gave birth to herself at the time of death.

Uh, be aware those titles might be hallucinated. I have had some success with ChatGPT finding books, but other times it utterly fails. Im not a fan of horror, so I dont have much personal experience with the genre outside of having to teach certain stories.

I don't think these two shorts really fall into the horror category.

I'm not sure what that collection was.

There might not even be a name for it. :/
Bump, just in case someone may know.

What was the Reddit board you were going to suggest?

Is it on the tip of my tongue or something more book nerdy?

Yes, that's the one. I don't think I have a user setting preventing being tagged.

I'm on mobile.

I'll copy the username, press @, then paste.

For some reason, the name comes out in bold.

Whatever.

I don't like this site's features and it makes me feel dumb. :)
This site's features are pretty archaic and janky. Not a reflection on any of the users.

he's literally just tagging wrong

you have to type it, the reason it's bolding and not working is specifically because he's copying a bold hyperlink

My post was nuked, loss of karma, and was moderated for being "too vague", despite a user knowing exactly the name of the story I described in detail.

I even updated the title stating my inquiry was solved.
