Yes, and even Tolkien, who seemed to love royalty, wrote a story about how Sauron was able to manipulate and corrupt it, which led to the downfall of Numenor.
Tolkien was also going to write a sequel to LOTR that was about how as Aragorn aged/died, Sauron/Morgoth-worshiping cultists started showing up and everything started going to hell. He ultimately abandoned the sequel because he just found it too depressing to write.
