Wicked Island doesn't give you an option. The character creator only lets you make female characters.

I want to be beautiful sometimes because I'm ugly IRL
I had a friend who would play as the women Spartans in Halo 3. He said he did this because they are less likely to get hit. I informed him that male and female Spartans have the same hit-box and it doesn't matter. He still always played women Spartans.

I always alternate in create a character.

I'm currently playing a male character in "The Outer Worlds" so whatever game I play next, I'll be a female.

Because they are cuter.
1. Aesthetic Perspective ("If Im looking at a character for hours...")
  • Some men say: If Im going to stare at a character on screen for 40 hours, Id rather it be a woman.
  • Its about enjoying the visual design or animation of the character.
2. Role-Playing & Escapism
  • Choosing a female character can feel like exploring an identity they cant in real life.
  • It allows them to role-play from a different perspective, test different dialogue choices, or experience alternate social dynamics in-game.
3. Game Mechanics
  • Sometimes female characters have different stats, move sets, or hitboxes (often smaller/lighter/faster in fighting games).
  • A male player might just find them mechanically better or more fun to play.
4. Social Factors
  • In multiplayer games, some men feel they get treated differently (sometimes even better) if they use a female avatar.
  • On the flip side, others do it for anonymity or to play with how people respond to them socially online.
5. Psychological Attraction
  • Theres also a subtle identification effect: some men feel more attached to or invested in the story if the protagonist is someone theyre attracted to.
6. Subversion / Fun
  • For some, its just fun to break gender expectations . Playing a female character feels like shaking things up compared to their real-life identity.

All of the above except for 3 and 4

There's also something awesome/sexy about a woman being powerful and kicking ass. Guys being powerful and kicking ass is kind of clich now - which can be kind of boring.
Depends on if the game has a good character customization mechanic with lots of design/clothing options.

Because playing fashion is fun and they tend to have way more options.

I can't afford to try dressing up in cool/pretty clothes so I do it in video games

Probably says something about me.
The stars in the sky will lend me their light;
To bring me closer to heaven with you.
I don't have a specific reason. It is just whatever fits my mood.

Like in AC Odyssey everyone basically said Kassandra is the better character so I went with that and she was awesome. So when a preset character seems to better fit the situation I'm fine with it.

When it comes to designing my characters in games that let you do that I tend to design them more akin to myself. A big bearded dude with a dad bod these days however when it comes to say picking a class and design I have this really weird quirk like in Dragon Age type games that my Mage characters should be Elves and that my Mage Elf should always be a woman. I don't know why but it just feels right and I do it every time.

I mostly use men modeled after myself but I have no issue with using women. Like in GTA VI if we get to play as the guy and girl I will have no problem with it. I have enjoyed plenty of lead women characters like in Tomb Raider or the game Wet or in other games I have played.

There seems to be a common divide that can come into play. The people who innately treat characters as self-inserts can't really fathom why you'd pick something that doesn't match yourself. But if one treats characters as just that, characters, it's rather easy.

For games there can be variety of reasons, from a greater or better variety of cosmetic options to literal gameplay benefits; e.g. the Black Widow perk in the Fallout series has more value because enemy lists can consist of double weighting for male enemies or entire factions that deploy only males.

Ok fine I shall be judged but your judgement is meaningless because I admit my guilt without shame.

Varies from game to game.

Mass Effect? It's Jennifer freaking Hale.

Cyberpunk 2077? It was a Persona 5 voice. Of course I was gonna pick FemV.

Skyrim? A coin flip. Literally. Female Breton the first time.

Pokmon was always random since Gen 3. Female, male, female. Though I sorta stopped after that.

I'm actually trying to think of a game where I picked them because "they're hot" and I honestly can't think of one at the moment. Dead or Alive series I guess, but that feels like cheating lol.

Depends on the how cool the character is?

Fighting games? Im picking whoever looks the coolest or has the most fun gameplay ex Ken and Juri in Street Fighter

Adventure games with a CAC? Ill gravitate towards guy choices, unless the girl choices are cooler ex in Pokemon I'll choose boy unless the boy design is lame like DP. RSE are equally cool so ill hop between the two.

Also the voice actor determines it too
Depends a lot on the ass.
And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to your span of life?
It's Guide
In an RPG I always do multiple playthroughs. Like in KotOR I did light side male, dark side male, light side female and dark side female. Not always in that order.

I'm fighting games, it depends entirely on the moveset. Loved Talim in Soul Calibur, she was fast and could fuck shit up.

After going through the game as the generic white guy I prefer playing as the speedy character opposed to the bruiser and that's usually a woman.

Not really sure, I've preferred playing as female characters for a very long time.

In the case of Pokemon I choose the female because they tend to have a better base design than the male.

i usually select the male character unless there is a gameplay difference.

Generally find female characters easier to make look like they're not made out of butcher's scraps.
I usually don't, but for my new game of Stardew, I wanted to role play a witch, and while I still could have done that as a male, female just felt right. It was the same when I played a witch in Skyrim.

I always pick a female because I am one. And I know this is stupid but I like to try and make her look like me because then I feel like I am actually in there doing the killing or whatever. I mostly play games like Diablo and Titan Quest 2 and LE, so yeah I know it's all limited. But if I can get a blue eyed blonde hair girl as my hero I am so in!

It's mostly on a whim or a second play though, first play through will usually be male. Last game I beat was Dragon Quest 3 HD2D and I picked female because vamp personalty is the best do to having no downside on stat gains, some of the best gear is also female exclusive. You can get a male vamp in HD2D but not until post game which defeats the whole point. I'm currently playing Dragon Warrior 3 GBC version and went with a female hero for the same reason.
