Aw, that's pretty incred... wait... wait... what?

Neighbor's parents down the street. Originally from Arkansas. Dumb typo fixed.
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

I feel like in retrospect it's still sweet since they actually made it work and stuck together and he didn't drop her for another teenager when she turned 21 or something weird.

But I feel like even trying to point that out makes it sound like I'm condoning illegal and gross relationships like that

I hope this all makes sense :(

Those are about the ages of my mom and her first husband.

It was always kind of weird to the family but nobody ever said anything because it would just be dismissed with "that's how things were back then."

Then my Gen Z nephews showed up and just bluntly talk about Papaw being a pedophile. Good shit.

Did the math. He was 21 and she was 13 when they met. Yikes. But its too late to do anything about it now the damage is already done.

So apparently it was a shotgun wedding before he got shipped off to Korea. My neighbors oldest brother was born five months later after the mom turned 14.

Nope nope nope nope

They had six kids, the oldest being 74 years-old and the youngest being my 56 year-old neighbor.

Pretty much my thoughts too. I wouldn't go as far as to describe it as "sweet" though, my wording would be more "slightly less bad". I guess though it does also have to be seen in the context of its time to some extent - like many things that we recognize as being plain wrong today, this was somewhat normalized back then.

Could be worse. John Tyler (yes, the 10th president of the US), his GRANDSON just died back in May of this year. Tyler was president from 1841-1845. He died in 1862.

Maybe I'm just not awake enough and overlooking something, but I'm not seeing the issue from the years alone? The only thing the numbers really say as far as I can see is that (at least one each of) his children and grandchildren lived long lives, not really anything about who (or how old) the mothers were. Like yeah, if he was those age and knocking up teens that's yuck as, but if he was those ages and knocking up fully adult women (and either way, the baby's born at age zero), then... it's kinda so what?

Yeah fair.

Maybe I shouldn't say "still sweet" but "at least it turned out sweet" or something.

IDK can't believe I live in the same country where that kind of shit is/was common.

If it makes you feel any better, basically everyone lives in a country where that kind of shit at least was once common. Only exception might be some countries that haven't existed at all for very long yet.

Im actually aware of the Tyler family, but I dont think the Tyler men borked any barely teens back in their days, they just had two generations that had sons very late.

Tyler was 54 when he married 24 year old Julia Gardiner. Their son Lyon was born in 1853 (John was 63 then), and Lyon was 70 when he married Susan Ruffin in 1923.

The legal at 18 thing is a fairly modern concept. People have been getting married young for thousands of years. Little over 100 years ago the age of consent was 10 or 12 in a lot of states.

Not to say any of that shit's right, but maybe they were on the tail end of that train of thought. It didn't seem to work out too well for Jerry Lee Lewis who married a 13 year old around that time.

Wikipedia has a [citation needed] next to the only claim I could find that hints at her exact age, but from what I can tell that would still put her in like her 30s? If so, while 70ish and 30ish might feel a bit yuck, they're adults, I'm not gonna condemn it.

He had a kid at 69 and his grandson had one at 74. No wonder.
Chatted with my neighbor before we went to our respective offices. He clearly had a bit of a "yeah, I know" grin and sigh as we chatted over how their party went yesterday.

At the very least, sounds like they were a happy family during his lifetime from the 1970s and on, though he readily admitted that the age gap dawning on him as a kid did make him shudder like crazy, but by that point the sin was almost three decades old and he didn't want to ruin his family mental image.

I mean they were likely marrying off kids in Arkansas back then.

Shotgun weddings are mostly jokes in fiction but its rare to actually hear about one IRL. Crazy shit. And its kind of funny that nowadays even the father there would be seen as too young.
