Start with the SaGa / Final Fantasy Legend collection.

The Final Fantasies for the Game Boy?

EDIT: I seen the remake for SaGa 2 and some other SaGa games on Steam.
Excellent game, I really like it.
Time is a funny thing, you know? I guess in the big picture of my life, you were only a blip. But oftentimes, those "blips" make the biggest impacts.
the saga 2 remake is a good place to start since it has decent QoL mechanics in it and you see if this is for you

You mean Romancing SaGa 2.

The SaGa 2 remake is Nintendo DS only and was never officially localized.

Played all of them. I love them. Actually the first RPG I ever beat was SaGa 1 (Final Fantasy Legend for the GameBoy). It got me into Final Fantasy which I was disappointed to learn wasn't much like SaGa (where are my monster and robot party members?). The thing is the series has very experimental gameplay and there is a lot more science fantasy aspects than most FF games (though some are pretty strictly fantasy). There's something satisfying about fighting a boss with nukes and a spaceship backing you up.

i remember checking out saga frontier and being extremely confused at how to even play the game.
No sig
Love 1 and 2 to death.

Romancing SaGa's reputation of being complicated scared me off, but I do wanna check out RS2's remake

SaGa is, at its core, a deliberately obfuscated game that encourages you to experiment and try out random shit until you find something that works. Except for the first three / FFL series. Those are mostly straight forward. Romancing SaGa onward is weirder and more open to experimentation.

Last Remnant can also be considered a SaGa game even if it doesn't have the title officially.

I have tried playing multiple games of the series across the SNES and whats available scattered across the playstations, but I never could click with them like that.

Saga frontier 1 is the farthest I got out of all the older releases. All I know was I picked the one dude lute (who apparently is probably the worst choice for a first playthrough guy I later found out, but when I originally played on the PS1 I was flying in blind) and made it far enough that I started getting my ass kicked by these giant random battle turtles, lol.

I did actually try that recent remake of saga 2 called revenge of the seven. I never finished it, but from what I played I was actually kind of into it. Out of all those games this specific 1 is probably the only one I would say that its pretty neat.

I've played frontier and frontier 2. really liked the first, especially the tokusatsu guy and the robot's stories. loved the world and art style of the second one, but holy hell was it boring.

Yeah, I really wish I picked red as my first character.

When I used to watch my brother play this game that is the guy that he first picked, and his playthrough actually looked fun. I might give saga frontier 1 another go with the recent re-release of it to see if my adult self has more patience to actually learn how to play it compared to my teenage self that just dipped out after my lute experience.

But yeah saga frontier 2 I did not like at all. I respect how good the battle theme is, but I just could not get into it's story structure and gameplay system at all. I could at least brute-force saga frontier 1 to a extent with the one dude gen and how you learned skills.

Not directly related but I played some of Final Fantasy Adventure for Game Boy. That's about it.
Kind reminder not to defend corporations when they make dumb/anti-consumer decisions.
I have SF1,Unlimited, Romancing Saga MS on both ps2 and switch. RS2 and 3 on Xbox. Never played the first 2 but just the RS games. The take away is while storywise its what you expect from that era (SNES). The saganess drags it down from greatness. I understand they wanted to try something different.

Now I enjoy RSMS till you figure out the game is game time based. You cant really finish a storyline till the game allows you to. That takes away my enjoyment. Also the enemies get stronger the more you level up. So just doing nothing most of the game till times up. I keep coming back to it though. I like it and enjoy it. /shrug

I love the final fantasy legends 1-2, it sucks we never got the remakes.

I think all 3 "Final Fantasy Legend" games got japanese remakes. I wish we had gotten translated versions of those on Switch instead of the Collection of Saga release.

Oh shit nice.

Probably not as fancy as the remakes of 2 & 3 though.

I think it just upgraded it from game boy graphics to 16 bit. And it adds color. I've never actually played it but seen screenshots of it

There are some minor QoL changes, but the biggest one is seeing what monster you will turn into if you eat the meat. You can see an example of what it looks like here:

This is a massive help. Before you basically had to use a guide to make sure you get beneficial changes.

So would you all recommend Minstrel Song or the remake of 2?

Yeah, I will recommend them both. If you have the right attitude it's a great series and those are both great games. The only game I will straight up not recommend is Unlimited SaGa.

FFL1 and FFL2 were great fun back in the day, not sure how much I'd like them now.
(2025-02-24) Not changing my sig until I feel like it.
What is it about Unlimited Saga that people don't like? I've never played it

The slot machine crap really hurt the game flow and just made you frustrated.

Crisis Core was around the same time so someone at square had a boner for slot machines or something. FFX-2 as well.

you REALLY have to know what the game is before diving in. They are NOT casual friendly, and they are certainly made with hardcore old school fans in mind.

SaGa games are amazing on paper, but so many of the games are so poorly made and feel like they are coming apart at the seams. Whether it is bad controls (in an rpg, no less), bad character designs, a terrible script, convoluted battle systems, or RNG on everything, there is almost something wrong with every game in the series.

However, I think the Romancing games probably work the best, and the remake of Romancing 2 is actually legit well made.

I also think SaGa Frontier games are interesting, but they are certainly janky and obtuse, and have nonsensical English scripts.
