Linux has been a very comfortable experience for a good while now. Don't miss anything from Windows
Yep, went to Pop OS last November and recently switched to Mint
All the games I play on Steam still work perfectly too, though anti-cheat games will never work (good) but idc about those

Also switched to Firefox at the same time
Luckily converting extensions from Chrome to Firefox was really simple

I think my current rig is my last Windows machine.
I haven't let it do the final* update because I'm afraid it might brick or otherwise intentionally screw up the installation, I guess because video games have trained me to think this is what late updates do.

I rode Windows 7 until Steam started to break, I'll be doing the same with 10

i have a few programs I use that either don't run very well on linux or won't run at all.
?
I only have a tablet. An ipad pro (yeah yeah, people hate Apple) i just use Safari. Here at work we can use Chrome, firefox, windows, or edge. I have to be honest I don't understand any of the differences. I literally only come to gamefaqs or youtube.

I never use any function or feature and only use the address bar. They all feel exactly the same to me. I use Chrome. I know everyone here complains about it. Again I see no differences at all for how I use a computer, which is barely using it.

No. Linux has come a long way but it still doesnt match windows for gaming (and the environment/software around the gaming). And my computers have supported windows 11 since the day it came out since I dont use 10+ years old computers
been on linux and macos for years. there's nothing that I miss from windows.
Allmind exists for all mercenaries.
nope. windows 11 works fine as long as you're willing to spend a bit of time looking up how to turn off all the pointless crap.

No. Give it 5-8 years and people will be making the same memes about not wanting to switch off of Win11 to the newest OS because there's nothing wrong with Win11.

About to switch to Linux. I figure I need a full day to do it (accounting for the time it takes to delete everything, the actual transfer process, adjusting all the preferences, installing all desired applications, and anything among all that not entirely going as smoothly as expected). I've been working with Linux Mint in a Virtual Box for a while now and I've been backing up everything I want to keep.. I'm just waiting for a day that I actually have plenty of time to do it, which should be somewhere this month.

The only program I use that's dependent on Windows is Photoshop but other than that I run Linux full-time and I thoroughly prefer it to Windows.

I have had a 1tb ssd sitting on my desk for more than a month, and USB with Linux installer loaded on it. Haven't gotten around to swapping out and installing yet.

I don't know nearly enough about computers to use Linux.

And before anyone says it's 'easy', I've seen the arguments about which version is superior, and heard about the faffing around you have to do to get stuff to work.

Depending on your needs, you don't really have to do any "faffing"

The main problems people are going to run into with Linux are:
  1. Trying to run a specific Windows application
  2. Gaming
  3. Modifying the OS/Kernel in ways that aren't supported, such as using a DE normally exclusive to a different distro
  4. Have a weird hardware configuration (e.g. wireless printer)
If you aren't doing any of those things, then basically everything you want to do is supported out of the box with most Linux distros.

TBF, printers are a pain in the ass no matter what OS you're using.

I'd rather alter the windows registry or bashrc any day than deal with a fucking printer with a flashing light on it.

Yeah. Basically no manufacturers out there make printer drivers for Linux so they all come from the community.

I use it at work, and it's... you know... Windows. It centers your start menu by default. I set it to left in like one minute, including searching for the setting.

The reason I haven't upgraded at home is because I got a popup window that said "BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA YOUR PC IS TOO OLD TO USE 11 BUY A NEW ONE YOU LOSER HAHAHAHAHAHAHA," which leads me to suspect my PC is too old to use 11 and I would have to buy a new one.

Wow, that is lame. I haven't gotten that pop up but I worry about my computer running worse, it runs generally fine but it's a 5 year old prebuilt and I worry 11 would make it slow to the point where I would want to upgrade lol

It's not so much Windows 11 as it is their announces plans for it sound horrible and dystopian. Windows 11 right now is basically the same shit as 10 but with a different looking start menu.

Among the plans they have announced they are going to:
Delete control panel
Make copilot mandatory
Block GPs for non enterprise users

Either way that sounds terrible what the fuck... I've been a life long Windows user but forced AI makes me want to get a mac mini lol

I've heard, and I have always loved the Mac Mini form factor. I just hope it can run emulators these days and still play some PC games lol

What are they trying to force you to do with the AI?

I'm going to have to buy another laptop because of this Windows 11 shite. Probably means I'll have to pay out for a Mac even thoughI just want something for email, Word processing, and browsing (and the weirdness of printing!).

I don't mean to rag on you in particular but this sort of thing is I think what I was the most disillusioned with when I tried linux for a bit. You see a bunch of people saying it just works now and you don't have to do anything fancy, you just use it like you would any other computer, and then when you try to use it a bunch of basic features of a PC just don't work because apparently things many people do regularly are too "weird"

I've got a friend who raves about them.

I use a trio of them at church, and they offer a pretty smooth experience, but all we ever do with them is mixer UI, media player, pro presenter, zoom and Gmail, so I dunno how they hold up against more intense tasks, experientially. I just know my friend is crazy about them.

Your experience is going to depend heavily on the distro. Mint is probably the closest to a traditional Windows experience. Ubuntu is fine for most people but it's very Mac-like. MX is pretty dope.

A lot of people swear by Arch based distros, but those have a steeper learning curve and more suited to someone who wants something closer to a pure Unix.

Never let anyone tell you linux is ez. Running linux is like running an outdated OS. There's always something broken that you just haven't discovered yet. The forums are flooded with these exact scenarios. Yes, I'll be switching, but I've dipping my toe in and out for decades.

I think the difficulty is a tad overstated. The biggest part of the learning curve is the CLI. Which is understandable but you only really need to memorize like 5 commands at the end of the day.

I think Linux is probably not a great choice if you're on newer hardware however, due to the nature of how it's developed it's in a persistent state of playing catch up and I don't see that changing.

First of all, forget the stupid username I picked when I was 15 in the dumbest city in America according to Mens Health magazine.

I got to try Linux on a sort of extra leftover laptop before committing to it on the family PC. I think now that Windows 10 is done I'll probably switch there, too. I'm just using Mint and not trying to learn anything fancy, though I do kind of enjoy that sort of project if it's not too hard.

Out wireless printer and scanner is easier to use than it was with Windows. Only problems so far have been with games, like having to turn off cutscenes in an old one or one not going to full screen. I might be struggling with a controller that's supposed to work too but I think it turned out the game I was really trying it with didn't support controllers.

Does steamOS count?
Ive been kds'ing flatpacks on the konsole with the steamdeck controller to get familiar with operating system in general. Nothing too complicated and i guess i need to find the right distro thats like nearly 1:1 steamOS

Linux would goto my 1070 laptop as its not win11-able

Is Steam OS not available on x86/64 anymore?

I remember playing around with it back in the day, but it was basically just Debian with a Steam wallpaper. Sounds like a lot has changed.

2.0 is. 3.0 (Steam Deck) is not and that's the one using proton.

BUT it's Linux so there's options. There's one distro that is basically a fork of the existing 2.0 to run proton and another one that reverse engineered the 3.0 OS to get it to install elsewhere. I am not sure how active development on those OS are but both of them have their own unique drawbacks and neither of them can truly replace the Steam deck OS.
