Here you go guys, go nuts! As always, at least try to have some fun with this.

BTW, if anyone has any interesting ideas for a banner, feel free to shoot me a PM. I came come up with something later (busy weekend with visiting family, actually posting this from a restaurant, lol) but if someone has something cool in mind I'm open to that as well.

BTW 2, we decided not to use the writeups. We really didn't give a template and they were all so different (some jokes, some serious, some long, etc) that we weren't really comfortable having people make choices based upon them. That was my fault really, should have given more direction about what we were looking for.

Rough draw for 2004
I think Smash Brawl not showing in 2008 is pretty big.

Yeah, first thing I noticed. 2008 needs Brawl there.
Feel free to suggest games we might have overlooked, we kinda built this in a hurry to meet our deadline.

Just like many older Contests, R1 is mostly gonna be kinda boring but likely a way to see how users actually vote (taking depth vs just whatever the main 2-3 highlight games are)

Out of all the matches there's probably only like 5-7 at most I really had to take a bit to think about.

Round 1 will probably be the most interesting because we don't really know anything about the contest. It'll probably get less interesting as the contest progresses because I feel like getting a grasp on strength will be easy.

No FFXV for 2016 either, lol.
Our brackets went under, but DpObliVion's lived to tell the tale.

The picture and info you see when you click on a year when making a bracket is just to help us fill it in, right? I ask because I could see it swinging a few matches if those were the planned match pics (2000 with no MM art, for example)

The Best Year in Gaming Bracket Challenge (the "Contest") begins on April 14, 2017, and closes May 22, 2017. The entry period for the Contest begins on April 14, 2017, and closes on May 1, 2017 at 4:59:59 PM Pacific Daylight Time ("PT"). The Contest will be played in the form of battles presented in bracket format. There will be thirty-five (35) battles in total. The first battles begin on May 1, 2017 at 9PM PT.

21 day contest? That's a little too short for a contest. Based on this, it seems like we have the following schedule:

Wildcard round - 2 matches per day
Round 1 - 2 matches per day
Round 2 - 2 matches per day
Quarterfinal, Semifinal, and Final - 1 match per day

I think I'd prefer if round 2 was 1 match per day just so we don't go through the contest so quickly. Changing round 2 to 1 match per day only increases the length from 21 to 25 days.

Oh yeah Im curious if you're gonna try to fit in like 6 games in a match pic similar to what you did for 70s and early 80s matches

I'm a Paper Mario fanboy so maybe I'm wrong.

But shouldn't it be in 2001?
1988 could use a reference to Super Mario Bros. 2.
Yay

2001 vs. 2008 in round 2 is brutal.

But by God, that match pic NEEDS to be Melee/MGS2/GTA3 in 2001 and Brawl/MGS4/GTA4 in 2008.

Games beaten in 2017: 8 (Most recent - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End)
Two big omissions I noticed:
2000 - The Sims
2016 - Final Fantasy XV

Games beaten in 2017: 8 (Most recent - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End)
Some pretty big omissions i found were:

1994: Mega Man X
1995: Mega Man X2, Mega Man 7
1996: Kirby Super Star
1999: Resident Evil 2
2000: Skies of Arcadia
2005: Dragon Quest VIII
Nice job DpObliVion for ranking 4 spots ahead of me and winning the BGE15 Guru Contest!
Super Mario Maker seems significant enough to mention for 2015.
Oh, 2013 is missing Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I mean, it was 2013's GameFAQs GotY.

In that vein, Dragon Age: Inquisition got second in 2014.

I'd also say Pokemon Black/White for 2011 and Diamond/Pearl for 2007.

A couple others:

1986 - Kid Icarus
1997 - Mario Kart 64
darkx remembers his friend, GrapefruitKing. RIP :(
Games beaten in 2017: 8 (Most recent - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End)
1998 - Starcraft
2 more omissions that should be added:

2007 - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
2009 - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

I realize Call of Duty's stock on this website has fallen off dramatically since 2009 and isn't as popular as it used to be. However, Modern Warfare 2 is still a Game of the Year winner on this website for 2009, and those games should be represented here. If you ran a poll today for the best game of 2009, Modern Warfare 2 would not win that poll.

So, just to be clear, the "Notable Games" are decided by the game's American release, not its Japanese release? Like for Link to the Past, which was released in 1991 in Japan but 1992 in USA. As well as for "New Platforms" in the case of the SNES, which was 1990 in JP but 1991 in USA.

I don't have a lot of really glaring complaints here, but I'm sort of mindblown by Super Mario Bros 2 AND Contra both being missing from 1988. 1988 has a MUCH shinier resume if you add those two.
2000: Shenmue, Counterstrike
2010: Fallout: New Vegas

Most important unrepresented games I could think of
Excluding already mentioned ones:

1993 - Secret of Mana
1995 - Donkey Kong Country 2
1996 - Tomb Raider, Diablo? (Just because first game in a series is usually mentioned)
1998 - Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, Baldur's Gate, Banjo-Kazooie
1999 - Silent Hill, System Shock 2, Sonic Adventure, Donkey Kong 64
2000 - Shenmue, Baldur's Gate II

The description for 2015 has Undertale in it. Watch as 2015 wins because of that. Either that or 2016 because Overwatch is in that year's description.

Can't wait for the inevitable offsite rallies to happen, again.

Would you consider posting the writeups on this board or elsewhere when the contest is over? I think a lot of us would be interested.

People care about a year? I figured Allen made this contest just to find something unrallyabale.

I'm surprised the overall prize pool is so large for a mini-contest like this one. For comparison, here was the prize pool for the other 2 mini-contests:

Best Series Ever - $850 (Grand Prize - $400)
Villains Contest - $850 (Grand Prize - $400)

The previous 2 mini-contests that had less than 64 entrants both had the same identical set of prizes.

As for this contest, the total prize pool is roughly 3 times larger and 2 of the prizes are larger than the Grand Prize of the BSE and Villains Contest.

It might have to do with running less contests so Allen has more funds for prize money

Hey Allen is there any link to the bracket that doesn't require a GameFAQs account to view? I'm trying to show some friends the bracket but the only way I'm finding is the bracket entry page which doesn't let you view it without an account.
