I've read this numerous times on this site "most americans are stupid" or "most people are just stupid",

you have to identify a baseline for what is not stupid to say if most people are stupid. not to mention many people can be extremely stupid in certain ways and extremely skilled in others. its just not a useful discussion

This.

By definition most people are of average intelligence. Whether that translates into what we consider stupid is another layer.
