I don't actually remember, I played Secret of Mana, Mario RPG and The 7th Saga (lol) all around the same-ish time, but I can't recall the order.
Actually, thinking about it, SoM and the 7th Saga were definitely before Mario RPG, so it was one of those two.

i think the first game i played that i would consider firmly in the rpg genre was ff7. either that or pokemon red...

Best I can remember it was FF6 on the SNES.

I technically played a bit of Dragon Warrior before Final Fantasy at a friend's house, but I'd say Final Fantasy for the NES is the first I really played

FF1. The Ultima series might have come first, but FF1 was what got me hooked. I'm not sure I actually played either at the time, though- might've just "helped" my dad play.

Chrono Trigger maybe? though I was playing it on a friend's SNES that she was borrowing from a friend, so I didn't beat it then. it wasn't until much later that I bought and beat the PS version
