18 y/o Makayla Dabney from Ohio was raised by her stepfather, Stephen since she was FIVE years old and she gave him a heartwarming gift at Christmas by asking him to ADOPT HER!!

She wanted to honour her father that's been a part of her life for years with the message "When you met my mom...you took me in as your own child. Obviously there have been rough patches but i love you more than anything."...

Stephen looks with surprise at the message and wiped away his tears upon reading the papers and Makayla's voice cracked as she said "I'm changing my name and everything. I'll have your last name until someone takes mine."

She said it was very memorable and exciting as she had it all planned out and only a few members knew about it.

The college student said it was the perfect gift idea that came to her a dream..that Stephen would adopt her and said it was a dream to present him with adoption papers as stephen agreed to adopt Makayla as his own. Her mom and Stephen already have a child of their own as well.

There's a lot of reasons. It can be to formalize the relationship between step-parent and step-kid. Allows the step-child some way in taking care of an adult with diminished capacity to make decisions of their own. Allows the parent to leave assets to the adopted kid more easily.
