The games that got 1 point are just ones that were listed by only one person in 10th place. Due to sample size and list length restriction, all you can really surmise is that not many voters played it. @FFDragon , as the one person who said Darkest Dungeon II was your 10th favourite game of 2023, did you hate it?

I liked it quite a bit.

I loved the original and this one changes up a LOT of things, some good some bad. I love my a rougelite though and this one scratched the itch this year.
If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?

Years ago EA launched a new franchise, they would go on to make choices that would leave its sequels confusing to its original audience but everyone still liked the first game a lot. Hell, this is a rare horror game even I played and had some fun with!

What this remake does is nail its core game play concepts without trying to reinvent the wheel, a temptation the series did with its sequels. Aside from a new code of paint and quality of life the game expands the story by giving Isaac a voice, its the same voice he has in the sequels but its a welcome change. The original game was mostly a one way street but in this remake it essentially becomes a horror metroidvania with the ability and encouragement to backtrack. Adding in sidequests and some new sub areas to established locations and you have what a remake should be. Now the ball is in play for them to reestablish the franchise instead of derailing it.

Do you like Jet Set Radio and wish they'd make a new one? (Just ignore the fact after this game got announced Sega announced one lol). Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a spiritual successor to the cult duology of games that modernizes the experience for 2023. Because it stays so close to the formula of the past it of course irked journalists who have to have constant new things (don't worry as a mega man fan I've lived thru this my whole life). But for us cool gamers we got another experience worthy of slapping the skates on for.

If you enjoyed Jet Set Radio or Future then try this one. Seriously just ignore the reviews, so many professionals whining that it emulates the thing its trying to emulate.

It's hard to fathom after a killer run during the ps3/360 era that Street Fighter kinda went mostly dormant and highly criticized for most of its run in the ps4/x1 era (and with 50% of that being it a ps4 exclusive). Where Street Fighter V may have felt lacking an identity at first, 6 hit the gate running at full speed. Stylish street graffiti style, an appreciation of the franchise, and a single player campaign mode that lasts longer than you'd realistically expect.

Street Fighter 4 hit at a time fighting games were at an all time low, but it brought a new era that fighting games have certainly flourished at since. It's why 5 got a lot of flack for being low effort, people cared again. 6's biggest flack came from a logo that by release people flipped on. It may not be very high on this list but aside from extreme nitpickers I was hard pressed to find many complainers for the 6 months of 2023 it was out.

Sega did what the fans always asked for...they killed Sonic! Honestly the trailer is still so damn good I'm going to link it.

So not only was this not a joke it was a free 2-3 hour adventure game that is entertaining start to finish. Well written, with some of the characters being the best iteration they have gotten in years. Solve puzzles, talk to Sonic friends, and play a game gear esque minigame for clues as you try to find out who murdered Sonic the Hedgehog.

It's War Time! Numbers on the left, letters on the right! Wait this about actual war? Oh! The long awaited and super super delayed Advance Wars remakes came out and honestly didn't have much fanfare after. I think if this hit when it was first supposed to release it would have been higher. The same beloved strategy duology is here with a fresh code of paint, online multiplayer, and a friendly redo of turns for players. A brand new soundtrack also hits home. Alright cya in a decade advance wars.

For the record: This was a title extremely on the fringe of being eligible

Every year a few indie games hit and do what the big triple AAA companies are doing better or fill a space that wasn't being produced. In many senses Pizza Tower is a long lost Wario game taken to the extreme. The focus is on speed, puzzles on the run, and insanity. Once you reach the end of a level get your Wario Land 4 on, set the panic to extreme and run like hell back to the start. Much like Cyberfunk filled the need for jet set fans this one fills the Wario pie just nicely

I'd also say Pizza Tower satisfies the 2D Sonic fans, especially considering how poorly Superstars was received.

And yeah I don't get why it isn't on console. I actually played the homebrew Switch port, which was made by one guy and works flawlessly!

If you had told me Spider-Man wouldn't have been a top 5 much less not even get a single first place vote when this game dropped I'd have never believed it. Despite the hype, and the positive feedback it did not do too well for people. Maybe the lukewarm reception to Miles Morales did it or maybe its just too much of the same. Whatever reason the duology story of Spider-Men up against Venom and Kraven just didn't draw the gamers hearts and minds this time enough for a top finish.

Spider-Man 2 doubled its size, added new traversal options and offered a better version of what 2018 could but yeah it didn't stick.

Go back to 2022 and nobody would have predicted a 2023 F-Zero release, but this years free with membership battle royale game is F-Zero themed. A simple game with a few courses and a few racers but unlike Mario 99 or Tetris 99 where a part of the game is out of your hands, F-Zero feels a lot more skill based with a lot more control.

Every race is intense and if you played it on SNES you know mostly what you are getting except that 98 other racers exist. Each race has you focused on beating rivals, you can bump and spin other cars to try and eliminate them, and collect enough super rainbow boost to take to the rainbow road and race above all others and obstacles. It's such a simple concept but its brilliant.
