It's officially the offseason now but the NFL news cycle never stops and there's still Super Bowl takes to be had, so here we are

Man I'd kill for my team to be in the position the 49ers are in. I'd rather be the Chiefs, obviously, but 49ers are in a pretty easy conference, have a fantastic team, and have made 3 super bowls recently. Some of us still haven't made one!
The best team to be a fan of is the Giants

Zero expectations ever and they still somehow manage to win a Super Bowl once a decade

Wild to think that the 49ers had that perfect 5-0 Super Bowl record with 17 touchdowns and 0 interceptions not that long ago and now they're suddenly 5-3

And Chiefs now suddenly breathing down their necks with 4 Super Bowls

2012 is not recent.

We should have gone last year. And I recognize that being a contender is a fortunate position to be in, but that doesn't make the sting of defeat feel any better at the moment.

So many fantastic players have come together to make the Niners strong and I'm sad that they aren't getting a ring. Simultaneously I'm worried that it's going to be impossible to keep enough of the talent together next year with expensive contracts coming up.

Especially because THIS game was decided by a muffed punt off a random ankle as well as a missed extra point.

Shit sucks.

Elway handing us the trophy, that gave us more than the Broncos, winning it in the Raiders stadium.

Maybe, but SB commercials have been culturally relevant for ages, at least a quarter century. I remember teachers talking to us students about them in elementary school, which would have been mid-to-late 90s.

To broaden that topic a bit - every time I watch a big football game, I'm reminded why soccer will probably never become big here. Everything about football just perfectly ties into (and has probably influenced) the American traditions of consumerism and excess. Major US corporations probably shudder at the idea of soccer taking over, and suddenly being forced to pump their advertising through a sport where the games are shorter and ad breaks can only be done at halftime.

If it sounds like I'm being strange and edgy, it's because I am. I love the actual sport of football (played it in high school), but the culture that surrounds it often makes me feel gross and self-loathing, like my brain just ate a gigantic brain-donut or something.

I haven't really been paying attention to Lombardi trophy presentations in recent years, but have they been doing that every year recently?

Also, didn't realize until now that Terrell Davis won their first one and Elway won the 2nd. Would have guessed without remembering that it was the other way around.

Yeah, the only difference between soccer and football with ads is that football ads are loud and in your face. Soccer ads are subtle, but they're always visible.

I think most people find ad breaks - actual commercials - to be far more obtrusive and annoying than sponsored jerseys or background graphics. The average soccer game has about ten minutes of commercials, all during halftime. The average football game has about five times as much. The "only" difference is a very significant one in this case.

american football has ads so you can get up and get drinks and food

soccer only has times for you to get up during flopping

Apparently the 49ers players didn't know the playoff overtime rules and the Chiefs players did

They were also planning to go for 2 at the end had the Niners scored a TD. That would've been fun.

I mean, considering they were the reason the rules got changed I would hope they knew it.

That being said it is a catastrophic coaching failure not to have at least your captains know what the plan is.

why must we continuously count out those underdog chiefs

The only way to prevent the threepeat is for them to not make it. Lamar has to get over the hurdle. Bills ain't got it and Burrow will get injured somehow.

Players didn't need to know. Shanahan and advisors knew and they were focused on being the first to get the ball in a proper sudden death if both teams scored the same # of points.

As will I. I wanted the Christmas rematch, not the damn chiefs again. And especially not to lose to them off of some garbage circumstances. The muffed punt off the ankle is going to haunt my dreams, as well the missed PAT. People are calling it a block but it was a damn miss being kicked that low.

It just occurred to me. If the clock would've rolled over at the end of overtime, why even have a game clock in playoff overtime? Just have it be like college overtime and only have a play clock.

I haven't looked at it again, but it looked like a shanked kick that would have been easily wide left if not for hitting a Chiefs player's hand so early.

It gives the players a break, pretty sure they switch sides of the field, and IIRC, under the old sudden death rules, you get the two timeouts per OT period (not sure if that's the case now too or not).
They had three timeouts from the getgo. I don't know if they would've gotten 3 more had it gone to triple overtime, but I'd assume so with how they kept saying "It's a new game."
