Iron Man was certainly less popular than other main Marvel characters at the time, but he was still an Avenger. And sure, at the time The Avengers was no Justice League, but it was still a headlining series for Marvel. People knew who Iron Man was.
A character like Vixen is still C-List, you can't argue Iron Man was below
