To be fair, people said similar thing about Metroid Prime. Except in that case it was "sidescrolling platform gameplay" that was a staple of the series and how changing it to a FPS would be awful and ruin the series forever.
They had to pull off a LOT of best-in-class or first-ever gameplay to make it work (FPS platforming, analog stick auto-aim, 3D world design), and they did, but it was right to be skeptical at the time.
Today, we know very deeply how open world works. There's no way it can make Metroid better. The only way they can make the open world better is by making it less open world and just calling it open world as a marketing tactic.
