It's the middle of the day on a Sunday afternoon. You're not expecting any visitors or any packages or deliveries, but you suddenly hear a knock on the door. You open it. What would you be more surprised to see?
A) a fairy
or
B) a walrus
Okay, I rolled a 14. What's that mean? Hsu
That you're a cheater. This is a 12-sided die. Chan
I play enough fantasy games that a fairy is weird IRL, but not weird for me to see. A walrus, on the other hand, is only in meme pictures with buckets.
Only the exceptions can be exceptional.
I've seen a Walrus before at like the zoo or whatever so a fairy would be more surprising

A fairy walrus

Fairies aren't real, and walrusses are, so I feel like what I'd be more surprised by is obvious

azuarc wasn't even home. he was playing Magic the Gathering at his buddy's store, which is extremely easy to verify
A fairy, though I might think I'm hallucinating.

A walrus might just be a really elaborate TV prank.

It is apparently not that obvious because I've seen several other sites go overwhelmingly for walrus

Like don't get me wrong, a walrus at my door would be PROFOUNDLY surprising, it would probably cause me to lose my grip on reality a little bit seeing it, but I feel like I could at least come to believe that maybe someone is playing the world's greatest prank on me. It is very close to impossible, but it is at least possible. Walruses exist in some parts of the world!

But seeing a fairy at the door would, like, confirm that magic is real. Completely different ballgame.
I initially voted for walrus because I was thinking exclusively of surprise as the instantaneous jolt of realization of what you're seeing. The walrus is physically larger and could actually pose a danger to you when it's so close. The implications for the fairy might take a moment to soak in, but the implications are definitely more surprising.

And yeah that fairy could actually be way more dangerous than the walrus.

I mean if this fairy just looks like a person dressed up as a fairy, then I'm gonna say Walrus. If it's inhumanly a fairy, then fairy.

If it's one of the trickster, inhumane, dangerous fae like the inhabitants of SCP-4000 that'd be interesting.

Well yes, but because walruses are real, we know that they don't just turn up at people's houses, because, y'know, they can't/don't do that. 0% chance. Whereas the chance that maybe what we know about reality is wrong and portals to other dimensions where fairies exist, it's still basically 0 but it's at least 0.0001%. If a fairy appeared, I'd go "wow, idk I guess this stuff exists after all" (and if it did, fairies are actually able to fly around and go to houses) whereas a walrus would be like "what. this is impossible."

I mean

Humans could have brought it there and set this up. Thats higher than a 0% chance and definitely higher than oh, I guess fairies are real after all, lol.

yeah this

I'd probably think the fairy was a person in costume regardless, so the walrus would grant the bigger shock. Though there is a zoo near my house actually and we've had animals from there in the street before... it doesn't have any walruses, though. If, as Mark says, the fairy is somehow undeniably magical, I guess I'd think I was dreaming.

This is what happens when you ban porn on Tumblr. Also, I blame the Casual Revolution

I this scenario, am I on Ambien?

I live in Iowa, there should not be a walrus within a few hundred miles of me (and not counting zoos more like thousands of miles). If I wanted to see a walrus I would likely need to drive at least 4-5 hours to get to the nearest zoo/aquarium with one.

A walrus showing up and knocking on my door would legitimately be more surprising than discovering fairies are real.

I will say if the walrus started speaking it would be more surprising than the fairy

Like someone else mentioned, I think the initial surprise of the huge blubbery walrus at my door would be bigger than the fairy. The fairy would take a sec to sink in.
