Sorry Red Turtle, I had to cut something and with it being a co-production idk if it's regarded as a proper Ghibli film. Also sorry to Horus and Go Panda and whatever other pre-Ghibli Ghibli movies there are!

I'm a big Takahata fan, Only Yesterday is one of my all time favs. But Whisper of the Heart is really great too, RIP Yoshifumi Kond.
Great: Kaguya > Whisper > Fireflies
Good: Yesterday > Pom Poko
Fine: Marnie > Poppy Hill > Cat
Meh: Yamadas > Waves > Earwig > Arrietty
Bad: Earthsea

Had to include Goro's movies in my rankings just so everything else could look better by comparison. (Or worse in some cases, I suppose.)
Congrats to 2020 GotD Guru champ azuarc!
Whisper of the Heart was amazing. Felt like such a magical experience. Only other one I've seen is Marnie, which was fine but couldve been a lot better.

I tried to watch Only Yesterday too but I gave up after ten minutes. It felt like a movie made to appeal to nostalgia that meant nothing to me. I checked out when the main girl started reminiscing about The Beatles. Plus I hated the art style and how it made her age fifty years every time she smiled.

I would have voted for Poppy Hill

Whisper of the Heart polling well, just as it should be.
wtf how am I the first Cat Returns vote, it's a great surreal adventure movie w/Cary Elwes in the dub

When Marnie Was There and Only Yesterday are close

Only Yesterday is my favorite Ghibli. Beautiful stuff.

Kaguya would probably be winning this handily if more people watched it.

Me included lol.

I see it called one of if not the best Ghibli movie a lot nowadays.

Oh yeah, Yamadas sucks too. But everyone knows that.

Since it didn't make the cut I also want to insist that people check out Iblard Jikan which would be in my top 3 here (very high praise). It's definitely not for everyone, being an experience that many could argue doesn't even count as film, but I adore it.

Also those Capsule music videos animated by Studio Kajino (ghibli subsidiary) are pretty great actually.

Anyway Kaguya for sure. Grave of the Fireflies is just an inferior take on the subject matter presented compared to barefoot gen and in this corner of the world, Only Yesterday is actually great, Ocean Waves is... decent, I suppose, but also ultimately forgotten for a reason, Pom Poko is trash, Yamadas is worthless, Whisper of the Heart is also great but only really the third best here, Cat Returns has moments but falls apart in the ridiculously rushed conclusion, Arrietty is perhaps the most underwhelming take on the Borrowers ever which is impressive given where the bar is at, and Marnie... I honestly remember very little of Marnie which is perhaps a pretty bad sign for the most recent one here. Through its many flaws, Kaguya was a film that moved me more than a vast majority of other media.

Tried watching it twice, got bored & fell asleep both times. I guess I find Ghibli movies profoundly beautiful 80% of the time, and painfully boring the other 20%.

I feel like I need to rewatch Whisper of the Heart.

Seems to be really popular, but I watched it years ago when going through a bunch of Ghibli films and I remember nothing of it. Don't even remember if I liked it or not. It left no lasting impression.

I actually checked it out from the library recently thinking I hadn't seen it but reading the back plot summary brought back just enough memory to make me realize I had. Just ended up returning after that.

Went into Whisper of the Heart blind many years ago and it completely blew me away.
I just decided to change this sig.
Blaaaaaaargh azuarc
It definitely did not blow me away.

I came out of that string of movies with Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, and Porco Rosso as the clear stand-outs (of the ones I hadn't seen before). Whisper definitely didn't hit like those for me.

Whisper is the greatest film Ghibli ever did. So impactful on my life.

I don't see how someone could watch Whisper of the Heart and not at least remember the singing scene . It was so beautiful

Nope, no memory of that.

Concrete roaaaads

Kaguya is terrific and I'm glad it's getting some love here, I don't hear it talked about very much. That movie was both beautiful and brutal.
1 of the 2 Pom Poko voters let's go
