there's an intermission/'ending of sorts after stage 20 in Dr. Mario, then it repeats.

Game and Watch Gallery 3 probably has a bit of variance depending on how you want to define "completion"

Unlock Hard mode in each modern game by getting 5 stars

or

Unlock all the bonus games (50 stars for all the bonus games in the main menu, or 60 stars for the bonus games + reverse Fire)

or

Get the credits (100 stars)

or

Unlock all the museum entries (120 stars)
The only certain death in the universe is Mother Hitton's Littul Kittons.
Not changing this line until I beat Seven Heroes (2/24/07) - Fulfilled 2/20/18
It's pretty hard to "beat" Dr. Mario from start. Should just treat it as a high score game.

Pokemon Stadium 2 has completely slowed me down on N64 games and Octopath Traveler is eating up my other time. I should actually try reading these posts again lol

I have been looking forward to the next update on your n64 journey.

Its nice to see 3rd party n64 stuff. This makes me hopeful we can get around 50 n64 games on the service, that would be just 15% of the catalog for NA.

I won't have time to play games again before Monday just as I haven't the past week whatsoever. I'm not worried about getting back into it, this sick schedule is temporary.

This is the number of games added to NSO by year added. I was surprised to see last year was the most games theyve ever done. If they keep that pace and this years pace then we should see around 30-35 new games added before the year ends.

2018: 29
2019: 45
2020: 21
2021: 41
2022: 39
2023: 55
2024: 16

I have good reasons. Its definitely been on my mind though.

I am looking to get retro achievements going on my Switch too, which should spice this up nicely. Ill have what I need Sunday. Speaking of which, heres a guide to all the NSO games on RA. Most are supported and its fun looking at the achievement lists:

That sounds like a terrible idea

because I would get so invested in getting the achievements that my progress would slow even more lmao

Game #30 and 31 - Dr. Mario (Nintendo, 1990)

Final time: 7:13

So I didn't realize that the NES version of this game was also on NSO, and I mostly played the Gameboy one. I'm counting it as done for both, especially since this is technically a high score game. That being said, I enjoyed it well enough that I wanted to try and beat level 20, which I eventually did accomplish. Not in one hit from level 1-20, but I just started on level 20. Maybe I'll go for a high score run on the NES version. I wish I played that one instead cause the colors are better than black, white, and pixelated!

Anyway, like I said I found it fairly enjoyable. Similar tier to Magical Drop and Tetris.

Gameboy games beaten: 4/21
Total games beaten: 32/246

I think Solomon's Key has been a little bit of a wall to hit. It's fine but I don't pick it up whenever as easily and I haven't played many games at all recently either.

I could play Dr. Mario on Game Boy though.

ctes I definitely think you should play GB Dr. Mario, or whatever feels more interesting to you. Solomons Key can wait for later =)

Getting back into gaming after a bit of a hiatus for personal reasons.

I did get started using RetroAchievements. Last night I played some Sonic the Hedgehog and Id like to beat the game before I tackle Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

My family always got Nintendo consoles so my first experience with Sonic was Mega Collection on GameCube and Im pretty sure I never got farther than zone 2. It has been ~20 years since I played this. Its a really fun game and I think the difficulty level is just right. I had two runs, one stalled out at the end of zone 2 and the other at the end of zone 4. I guess I gotta go fast because a playthrough takes longer than I expected at my slow pace lol

wait, did they add Sonic 1 at some point? I thought I remembered it not being on there

note that much like Ninja Gaiden Tecmo decided to change the rules about continuing at the very end. So you can only continue up to a certain point, and you have to finish the last 8 stages on one credit or you'll get sent back to stage 41.

here's a pretty thorough guide through the game, including how to get the better endings and the locations of hidden items
https://strategywiki.org/wiki/Solomon%27s_Key

If you don't want to read all that, something that I wish I knew when I was playing because it would have been helpful (and I probably read at one point, but forgot about until I saw it while watching a playthrough on youtube)
you can change some items by hitting them with the wand. Specifically, the diamonds will cycle through a series of a few items, including fireballs and super fireballs (which is why there's relatively few fireball jars lying around, and you can also restock some fireballs during the constellation bonus chambers because of that)

But yeah I don't think there's any difference that aren't visual, they ported a bunch of old NES/Arcade stuff in the early GB years.

Ctes has beaten Super Mario Land

Yeah okay, I changed direction again lol. I figured this could be knocked out quickly enough. They released a bunch of Game Boy release titles, gotta try them.

Super Mario Land is a low point for the franchise, it's not bad, but it's quickly uninspired. The controls aren't as good and the levels are dull, to some degree because of Game Noy limitations I guess. For some reason blocks and usual enemies are tiny. For another weird reason instead of the usual star theme they used Offenbach.

But it's 12 short levels separated on four worlds, so it doesn't overstay its welcome. It also introduced Daisy, who has worked herself into even main games now so there is that legacy. It's fine for just needing to get their mascot on their new handheld I suppose.
