I know it's a genetic thing where it "tastes like soap" and I've supposedly got it, but it more tastes... idk, floral to me? In dishes where it is present it doesn't really override the other spice. But you don't taste ANY soapiness? Even a subtle bit?
One of the absolute top tier herbs. Doesn't taste at all like soap.
The real question is how does everyone in this camp that universally says it tastes like soap know what soap tastes like

Low key I kinda think it tastes the same to everyone and some people just don't like it, but who am I to be a cilantro trutherHigh key me, hence this topic. But we might just have the gene.
High key me, hence this topic. But we might just have the gene. The fact you're saying this indicates you don't have the gene. Trust me, you would know
So it might be that a ton of people have the gene and 90% of them are ok with it, but the rest are too picky.
The fact you're saying this indicates you don't have the gene. Trust me, you would knowThere's clearly a spectrum since some people say they taste ZERO soap, which is crazy. To me, there's no question that it tastes like soap.

I also know people who gag when eating fish sauce, pickles, or broccoli, all of which I love. What's so special about cilantro that it needs a gene to explain distaste? I even have heard of people disliking mint because it tastes soapy (as in a common aroma associated with soap)

I know there's an actual soap gene. When the human genome is fully analyzed, they will have found thousands of genes that directly affect smell and taste of various foods. But cilantro is the only one that people defer fully to the gene.
By the way, all studies do conclude that the gene is only a small part of the overall psychology and (like with any food) repeated exposure can change your taste.
Sure but most people probably won't keep eating cilantro if it tastes like soap to themI don't think that's true. It's in practically every Mexican dish ever and that's the most popular cuisine in North America. Europeans might not eat it as much though.

Because it doesn't taste like soap to like 90% of people.does this post taste like salt or soap???!1
How is this hard to understand??
Because it doesn't taste like soap to like 90% of people.Doesn't explain anything 90% isn't 100%, and a large portion of soap tasters still eat it. I won't mock your confusion here because I know statistics is difficult and unintuitive.
