If I'm already 100% over the "She has social anxiety" joke 2 episodes into Bochi the Rock, is there any hope at all of it turning around for me?

Painting a target in my back here, but this one is a struggle to watch. Obviously it's a great production, but it is not actually doing anything for me. It's all kind of.....annoying....

Bocchi didn't really land for me, so waiting for someone else to answer might be better. The few times she actually performed were pretty interesting. Lots of creative camera angles and good animation. The characters were all fine too. I just found the show to be pretty average overall.

On another note, I wanted to mention, the first episode of BanG Dream Season 1 is on their official channel on youtube (and only episode one, for some reason). You could watch it there and see if you even want to bother pirating the rest of S1. It's a completely different animation style than what they used in S2 and beyond. S1 is my favorite, but I know a lot of people skipped it and went straight to S2 so you could probably get away with doing that as well.

Congrats to 2020 GotD Guru champ azuarc!
I'm definitely still going to check if Bandori (I'm learning!) S1, skipping parts entirely isn't my jam.

Despite taking so long to watch it, I fully expected a, like, major awakening to a love for Bocchi. Hmmm. I guess it's a combination of setting expectations, and also watching it in the middle of all these drama band shows when this seems to be a different type of show entirely that just happens to revolve around a band.

I'll give it a bit more, I at least want to meet the drunk girl.

I think it is less pronounced once she gets used to the other band members.
Just killing time until the world ends.
I dumped Demon Prince of Momochi House a few eps in. They weren't really exciting me with the three dudes and the normal girl, and the dialogue was trying for "we're totally funny, aren't we" sort of pandering humor that stopped landing. Just came off kinda bland. Less Konohana Kitan and Kemono Jihen fun and more Nura: Rise of the Yokai without the fun Yuki-Onna girl to grab me.

Momochi House was thoroughly mediocre from start to finish. You definitely didn't miss anything by dropping it.

Bocchi the Rock doesn't offer much more than "lol Bocchi" and a creative production. The music/performances are really good, and there are nice moments where Bocchi tries to overcome her anxiety, but they are few and far between, and it's always 2 steps forward 1 step back.

I'll explain a few things about Ave Mujica from the last page as someone who follows the franchise that may shed some light to why episode 13 of MyGO is the way it is.

So when Ave Mujica was first unveiled, only the characters' stage names were given. They were pretty much an unknown to the community. Then the MyGO anime started to air and people noticed some of the characters shown looked like members from Ave Mujica, and that's when it was picked up on that they would be part of this anime too.

So people were able to piece out that:

Oblivionis = Sakiko (Keyboard)
Doloris = Uika (Vocal and Guitar)
Mortis = Mutsumi (Guitar)
Timoris = Umiri (Bass)
Amoris = Nyamu (Drums)

Now here's the thing, throughout the time the anime was airing, the Ave Mujica VAs only announced that they were voicing their characters as the character and not the stage name even though it was obvious to the fans who was who. So you get a Superman/Clark Kent situation.

Now episode 13 comes along Ave Mujica has suddenly formed, each character says their stage name, and now the VAs can formally announce which member they are despite it being no surprise. So in the end it was a big marketing thing and a setup for the next season.

I'll say that in the game, there's a retelling of the MyGO anime story and it ends where episode 12 ends. So episode 13 really was meant as a bonus.

I mentioned earlier that Rui from Morfonica was my least favorite BanG Dream franchise character. That position has now been taken by Rana. Ugh, she's so lame. She's just a pale imitation of Hina (instantly good at everything, finds other people interesting for odd reasons), except Rana added nothing to her group's dynamic.

So your reason is valid, but that's Raana's thing to her character. She's like a "stray cat" that does whatever she pleases and is completely detached to all the drama that the other 4 go through. She's an outsider that barged her way into the group. Considering her flightiness, I would say they were trying to not make her too much like Tae. They play the same instrument after all.

As for Mutsumi and Sakiko, there's a theory floating around between those two, but that's for next season to see if anything comes to light.

I honestly thought BanG Dream S1 looked fine too. My theory is that a lot of people couldn't get past parts of the art style, like all the girls having star-shaped pupils.

S2 I feel would be a bit rough at first for people who haven't played the mobile game. They do an admirable job introducing the bands for new viewers, but it's still four whole new bands. Granted, as others have said before, the main story only focuses on a few of them.

Yeah that's the thing about these multimedia franchises, sometimes the story telling is divided between anime and game. BanG Dream is a case where it's the game that adapts the anime plot (even S1-3), but so much of the story (especially for the other bands) is told through the game.

I may have exaggerated a bit with the Season 1 animation, but I remember some shots looking really weird especially because of how their eyes are drawn. Though maybe they really did clean it up with the blu-rays. I think I watched it through Crunchyroll.

Though I guess Season 1 is suddenly lost media because you can't really watch it legally anywhere and the blu-ray is apparently out of stock in stores.

Trying out Hokkaido Gals. I'm getting a bit of Nagatoro meets Dress Up Darling vibes from this (though not as good as the latter). Minami is interesting, and the dialogue has its moments...but it is definitely not amazing either. Probably just needs another character or two to balance things out. Just seeing them hang out would get kinda boring.

When it comes to this music stuff I'm ready to assume it's an issue with the publisher rather than the licenser. People are still losing it about GBC not officially coming over, but considering it Toei it's really not surprising, they're kind of incompetent with this stuff. Maybe the same here with Bushiroad?

Watching through this still, and though the vibe is more Love Live compared to the much more dire vibe of MyGO, there's still a major difference here that's causing me to appreciate it a bit more on the actual performance front. Love Live always felt unrealistic. Like, maybe I'm remembering wrong, but at no point did anyone in Love Live....suck? They practice a ton, do wayyyy more actual musical sequences, but they're pretty much professional idols from the very second they get on stage. Here, in both shows I've watched so far, the MCs....are not great at playing! Obviously they get better as it goes, but 5 episodes in and Kasumi is still absolutely terrible at guitar. Anon can play a little bit from the get go in MyGO, but it's still at an amateur level and she's basically faking it for attention. Honoka in Love Live, however, is at the same skill level in episode 1 of the show as she is in the movie, despite whatever the narrative is claiming.

Maybe that's why I constantly ended up skipping all the performances in LL, I had no investment. I watched that show for the humor and character personalities, I didn't care about the group.

Yeah it's only when they practice when they show any weakness like getting tired out. The reason why the dance sequences have to look so good from the get go is because it's often what gets used for the choreography in the actual live performances, so that stuff has to get replicated even as unrealistic as it seems in-universe (the Yohane anime was a big offender of this).

But with BanG Dream (and probably Girls Band Cry as well) their lives are just them playing songs like any band performing on a tour would. So they can afford to mess up in-universe if the narrative deems it so.

I finally finished Fractale , which I got halfway through several months ago and then stopped watching for some reason. A lot of things about this confused me, and I'm sure taking such a long break in the middle didn't help. I remember being confused at the start too, though so maybe that's just how it was.

I was intrigued by the setting early on. Everyone lives under the control of a weird augmented reality system called Fractale. The main guy meets a girl who's on the run, and then he gets pulled along on an adventure to determine the fate of the world. That was a decent premise. I liked most of the characters too, a lot of them were fun but could be serious when the situation called for it. As for the actual story, though... I didn't get it. I didn't get why they needed Fractale. At one point they visited a futuristic city where anyone can do anything because reality itself is malleable. I suppose that's neat, but a lot of people acted like the world would literally end if it got shut down. Meanwhile there's a rebel group living just fine without it, they just have to farm crops and sew their own clothes and stuff. It kind of undercut the whole moral dilemma, in my opinion, when the Fractale side was cartoonishly evil and nothing super bad would happen if we got rid of them.

Other than that, I didn't like some of the more, uh, uncomfortable aspects the story ventured into. The way they handled one touchy topic in particular really rubbed me the wrong way. I'm talking about the faux-parental incest rape stuff with that creepy priest . I really could've done without that, especially since I'm not sure how it ties into the overarching themes, if it even does.

I guess my overall opinion of Fractale is that there was probably a good idea in there somewhere, but the specific ways it explored that idea were confusing and didn't appeal to me at all.
**R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D**
The OP and ED are amazing. It's too bad the ideas it presented never seemed to come to fruition.

Speaking of touchy subjects that I wasn't expecting to deal with, been watching Sailor Moon Crystal along with a friend and got a weird dose of Electra Complex...so that was awkward as all hell. Not sure THIS is the kind of show that should be doing that, or any show for that matter. It's one of the few things I've stopped and said just nope to about what the show is doing.

Caught up on the Spice and Wolf remake and they are through the first major arc now. Honestly not sure which is stronger between this or the original--I definitely don't think there's a huge difference in quality between them.

In general I think the remake has been more on-point with the dramatic scenes, but the overall vibe of the show was a bit stronger in the original, though I'm not sure exactly what combination of factors leads to that. The two things I will say are that I've found voice acting better and more well-rounded in the remake, but I liked the visuals of the original show more.

Basically yeah though this is a totally good remake so far--I think you could pretty much watch either version and be okay.

In manga news, I read the first four volumes of the 7th Time Loop manga. I'm getting physical copies so that's as far as it goes for now... which sucks because it still hasn't caught up to the anime and I want to see what happens next! I know this series started as light novels, but the few LN I've read had super basic writing and I couldn't get into them. I'm sticking with the manga.

I'd say the anime was a bit better. It had a few extra scenes, like when Rishe got pranked with spicy wine but drank it anyway like a boss. The voice acting and animation added a lot too, especially to certain action scenes. Still, the manga is good. I like the cute little bonus comics at the end of each volume. Plus there's no guarantee 7th Time Loop will ever get another season, so at least I'll be able to continue Rishe's badass adventures in this format.

(Regarding my comment on LNs, I'm sure there are good ones out there. I've only read one crappy SCP one and the first Haruhi one where I mostly just felt ripped off for paying full book price for content the anime covered in three or so episodes.)

In my experience manga are usually much worse in this regard. LN adaptations generally either cover fewer volumes or make huge cuts; either way, there's less repeated content before you get to new stuff. I agree about the overly simple writing simple style, though.
