I've done a breakdown of Spring Wind Skylark so now I really feel obligated to comment...the most interesting thing I learned was to hear it as a straightforward anime or idol song - start with catchy hook, verse 1 at 0:20, verse 2 at 0:30, pre-chorus at 0:39 (the two pre-choruses is a little weird), chorus at 0:58 and 1:17 - cut it at 1:37 and you basically have your 90-second anime OP!

First match is close. I like songs that have that uhhhh sparkle to them. Like Schala's Theme for a famous example. FM04 sparkles. But I love .... Naganuma ....

Y'know, I didn't expect this to be, well, FM (at least I think it's FM? sounded Genesis-esque so I assume it is) lol. Nice song tho, I like.

Funky Dealer - 7.75
Really cool instrumental, love the bass, but the samples honestly got progressively more annoying for me.

Burger King Futo Lettuce - 8
Y'know, I have literally no fucking idea what I expected from this combination of game name and song name, but it was not this. Nice song tho.

Burning, Churning Power Plant - 7.5
Never been a favorite Forgor Land song. In terms of level themes, gimme Moonlight Canyon, Northeast Frost Street, or The Battle of Blizzard Bridge any day. Gets fairly cool as it goes tho.

Astral - Prison - 5
Yeah this is not my kind of ambiance. Hoping this and Moeity or whatever it was from last match are the only examples of this because otherwise I'm gonna fall asleep more matches than not.

Spring Wind Skylark - 8.25
Very happy song, some parts just sound slightly off tho. Warriors GT version's better iirc.

this version of the game is on the Sharp X68000 btw, it uses the ZMUSIC format (which is basically just an advanced (for the time) container for fm, pcm and midi audio. the game happened to have both fm and midi soundtracks this way, and mizuno-san definitely pushed both to its limits

Hey, Subarashii is back at it. This is some pretty nice FM. Calm and sweet, and I quite like the choice of instruments. Very slick, really. Hmm... I mean yeah, it's good Naganuma stuff, I'm just so used to listen the dealer samples in more creative ways and the instrumental doesn't hit me as other JSRF songs. Uh, I think I'll be cool with Twin Moon. But they're both good on their own ways.

Look guys, it's my #1 pick for this tourney! Lots I have to talk about this track... well, I'm just amazed someone made a fusion-racing-esque remix of Omiwa Legend and it sounds so clean! And only now I realize it quotes Gymnopedie No. 1, which is a song I adore very much too... jeez, Uchulups is so good at this. This OST just has great music all around, but this one is my favorite. The name is just the icing on the cake, by the way. It's perfect. Maybe I'm a little biased for certain in-game thing about this song? *sigh* I'll just proceed to its opponent. So, I've listened to Churning Plant plenty of times and I still don't get why it's so liked. The sounds at the intro and the end of the loop are undeniably cool, but I would prefer the song much more if it built itself from that instead of going into forgettable territory. It has other redeeming stuff at the later part of the loop, but it's nothing that gets me hooked. I don't know, maybe it will end growing on me, but as far as today it's just fine and nothing else. I get to vote for Ichirin without regret, yay! Really hope it wins, but I can't understimate how popular is Forgotten Land. May the best continue.

Interesting track. Yeah, the build up is nice and all the sections catch my attention as it goes, very ethereal as the title promises. Oh yeah, this is some classic Gust. Accordion and flute as leads are awesome! Hard match here, folks. I thiiiink I'll pick the prison. But damn, both doesn't miss. You just had to make a tough corner, didn't ya?

Maybe it's just the time of night for round 3, and maybe it's when I'm listening to Atelier, but it just sounds like any number of Sonic Lost World/Colors tracks, and I'm not about that tonight. On the other hand, I will almost always appreciate decent ambient.

Gonna make my reviews quick, tired.

This Twin Moon thing or whatever is neat! It's got that "90's Japanese music on some outdated PC soundchip or some console I've never heard of" vibe which is always good. Won't really stand out later but a pleasant listening experience. 7/10

Hideki Naganuma is always a good vibe, Funky Dealer's voice clips are so silly but yeah it's just a classic track, I've always been a really big fan of it. 8.5/10

I have no idea what this Burger King thing is and I'm too lazy to find out or to develop a greater appreciation for what it's doing. It's fine. 5.5/10

Factory Inspection 2! It's nice to see that my boy Jun Ishikawa (on the whole, my favorite VGM composer of all time) can still crank out a fucking banger. Forgotten Land is incredible. 8.5/10

This Ghosthunter thing is inoffensive. 5/10

Spring Wind Skylark is just... ugh, it's *too* cheerful and I'm just not in the mood for it? Cliche anime stuff. I can enjoy this sort of thing on occasion when it's got some kinda hook that I find interesting but I find this to just be both cloying and unmemorable which is a bad combination. Don't care for it, worried it might go pretty far. 4/10

Twin Moon has that Yuno-esque sound to it which is okay. It doesn't really go many places though. Eh. Funky Dealer isn't really my type of song, but I love the dealer's voice. Everything he says has a hypnotic quality to it.

Futo Lettuce is one of the worst songs in the contest. There are plenty of others I dislike more, but I can at least see how they're unique or interesting. This one has absolutely nothing going for it. Power Plant is far from my favorite Forgotten Land track, but it doesn't have to be great to win here, and there are still some neat sections.

Astral's fine I guess. Good atmospheric music, but nothing I'd want to listen to on its own. Spring Wind Skylark is a fun Atelier song, which pretty much always pleases me.

"One more awesome" is a great title. This is such a UF8 song. Weird jazz is interesting, something I can appreciate intellectually even if it's something I would never seek out on my own.

Funky Dealer is silly fun. It doesn't have the majesty of Wrapped in Black, or the anthem-like glory of Concept of Love, but it's still up there as one of Naganuma's best. The funky instrumental segment right in the middle is cool. I might like this more without the (blackjack?) dealer's calls, actually. Although, without them, would it still be a Naganuma song? An interesting question.

i kinda want to play this game solely based on the title ngl ANYWAYS this changes pretty drastically post-intro into something decently cool! The background flute is really nice.

"Burning, churning power plant" is almost good. But just two -ing adjectives is a mistake. Consider "Burning, Churning, Powering." Or "Empowering." Okay whatever the heck that instrument was at 1:00 was really cool. Ooh and the bells at the chorus :)

Okay the first thirty seconds of Astral are not promising. I hope it's not six minutes of this.

Well it was but Skylark is Asano and Asano always knows how to put a smile on my face. I love the Gust flute so much, and then the strings and accordion are just so beautifully arranged together. I just love how effortlessly everything trades off with each other, how we keep adding more instruments, how we go full HAM FLUTE! Wild Woods, take notes.
