Sounds like it's worth going to see.

Genuinely surprised since it seemed like people were very down on the movie before it released. Looking forward to it mostly for Yelena

I think because the characters they picked aren't standard Thunderbolts characters?

Yeah I think people were down on the idea of the movie.

They didn't like the characters chosen for the team or the set-up

I still am salty we are doing Thunderbolts with no Zemo and no Songbird.

But I am also excited to see the movie.
It's weird because half of these characters are some of my faves (ok, just Yelena and Bucky) and the rest of the team I literally hope dies

Critics hated on Cap 4 and it was decent, so who even knows anymore

I actually liked John Walker's character arc in FatWS, so I'm looking forward to see what they do with him going forward.

I'd never even heard of the Thunderbolts before this movie

How have you avoided it? I feel like I see ads for it everywhere.

I guess I just don't engage with anything that has ads anymore!

That's nothing new though, but I figured I would have seen, like...a person talking about it somewhere at some point. And it's not like it's just a blanket avoidance of people talking about movie releases and big hits because Sinners has been innescapable, I've seen it EVERYWHERE.

How is this movie actually doing?

Looks like its heading for an $80 million+ domestic opening which should put its final total well ahead of Captain Americas on the same budget. Audience scores coming in very positive too.

That's really interesting because I still don't know what sinners is.

I feel like the first time I remember hearing it mentioned was in the smfffc topic yesterday. Maybe I saw one ad awhile back but I remember nothing about it.

So we have had opposite experiences with these two movies.

Wow, weird! Biggest opening weekend for an original movie in like....I forget the exact amount, a decade or so? Of course that seems to be just over half of whatever Thunderbolts made, but I guess that's just the situation we're in for franchise versus original content.

Different circles I suppose!

It's Ryan Coogler so not like there's no overlap there for the Marvel folks.

Sinners has done extremely well particularly in North America. However LtM youre in the south right? Given its very much about the south I can see how youd be more exposed to it. Havent seen much in Ireland but have heard chatter from people including family members.

Saw both Sinners and Thunderbolts yesterday.

Sinners is A/A+

Thunderbolts is like a B+/A-. Not a top ten Marvel movie for me personally, but still really good.

But Sinners.

Edit: Actually, one quibble about Thunderbolts. So soon after Brave New World, even noting that Falcon vs. Big Red happened recently, and not one joke or question about why they named their team after President Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross? And the soccer team being either a punchline or a "yeah we totally named after him" to avoid the peewee reference?

It's a very minor quibble, but, like, eh. Just a dumb thing that rattled around waiting.

Out of 25-30 movies so far this year if probably say:

Sinners > Black Bag > Thunderbolts* >= Warfare >> the rest.

So that feels pretty accurate. Sinners has been head and shoulders above the rest though. And at the bottom you have movies that I wanted to be good not were actually awful like 'Love Hurts' (poor Ke Huy Quan). Although thinking about that awful movie reminds me of Heart Eyes, which was actually a pretty good Valentine's Day slasher and might fill the number 5 spot currently.

Yep just back from it, really, really good. Very nice to have an MCU film with an actual visual identity that feels like it has a unique voice behind it as well as actually being about something real.

Better than Cap 4?

Not even close. I did think Cap4 was okay, given the challenges they faced it turned out alright, but this is actually a good film by any metric. Strongly recommend even if not a massive MCU fan.

Great movie. Looking forward to seeing the Avenger z in action.
It's Reyn Time.
I wish it had performed a little better in the box office, though it did okay considering what I initially thought it might do when it was first announced. There's very little competition out next weekend so hopefully it'll have a better hold than some of the more recent MCU drops.
:>
Truly smilin'
Unfortunately I think Thunderbolts is paying for Marvel's sins. Drop this movie pre-Endgame and it does $750 million worldwide and gets favorably compared to Guardians of the Galaxy.
It's Reyn Time.
The other side of that is that the Chinese box office for Hollywood movies is not nearly what it was. Most big budget American films make about a fifth of what they used to there. China used to be a guaranteed $100 million+ for the MCU, often much higher now its like $20 million with some films not even releasing there.

However, strong word of mouth should carry this to success.

I liked this one. not sure about the third act though... it felt like it went from being about one thing to being an allegory for something totally different. I didn't know I was looking for a serious statement from a movie with a bunch of dick jokes.
xyzzy
and to be clear, I thought they did that stuff really well. but it's also an MCU movie? I dunno. just feels a little dissonant.
xyzzy
I think the allegory stuff was set up from the very beginning and continued throughout the whole movie. Like the first thing you see is Yelana jumping off a building as she talks about how empty she is inside. Can see it being a surprise for people who were expecting a more standard superhero third act though.
It's Reyn Time.
it's more the tonal shift than the content - like suddenly the end feels like we entered an anime, is my best way to put it? it's not that I wanted a superhero movie or anything, it's more that this poignant message is happening in a place where the Red Guardian exists. I still think the movie was pretty good.
xyzzy
You're not wrong about the tonal shift, but I love tonal shifts that are done well. My favorite comic book stories are usually the ones that use the superhero framing to tell a story about something else.
It's Reyn Time.
The very ending of the climax did feel a little unearned, like no one besides Yelena actually gave a shit about Bob and were just doing what they had to to save the day. Walker being there could've even been counterproductive. It would've been so easy for Void Bob to pick their motivations apart.

But that's a minor complaint. Overall it was really good.
Change is weird.
yeah, and those goofy flips in the hall just made me kind of cringe laugh. just a weird way to finish off a movie with really good heart.

I'm also trying to square Bob's powers with the MCU and what that might mean. though I'm not even sure what he can do at the end of it? I'm not really a comic book guy but it felt like they imported a DC character into the MCU and that seemed game-breaking.

I'm imagining that the new big bad in Avengers somehow absorbs his power or something because otherwise he seems way too strong to just exist in a world with Captain America or Shuri or Ant Man or whoever.
xyzzy
Bob by the end reminded me kinda of Molecule Man from the 80s comics (redeemed villain who just wants to live a peaceful life without using his crazy OP powers), and given that we're heading into Secret Wars, I wonder if that's by design.

I thought it was alright. I like that it was actually about something, unlike Cap 4. I think it's a movie far better suited to the current moment than that one was. I kinda just... wish it had more of this team actually teaming up to do stuff. The third act didn't really feel like a deserved payoff. I feel weird about it. The movie was character driven but didn't spend a lot of time actually furthering the characters' relationships and almost all the characters didn't seem to know why they were there the entire time and seemed like they didn't want to be there. It was weird!

I made this exact same critique to my friends after we got out.

I think the movie needed 1 scene that showed the group actually bonding over something.
skull
I also think the Taskmaster thing is actually a really big problem, not a small problem. How am I supposed to take the message of the movie seriously when she's treated that way? What was the point of her even being here? Killing her off felt malicious for a movie that's supposed to have a warm heart at the end when they never actually reckon with the fact that she, too, could have really benefited from this whole group therapy thing we're doing. I REALLY hate it. It made the rest of the movie feel disingenuous.
I would agree with you on Taskmaster if I felt like she ever had any significance to the MCU. I had to explain to my kids who she even was and they are big MCU fans.
