Fairy Oddparents was successful for its early seasons, but they just failed to keep the momentum going. They just kept trying to add new gimmick characters, but never really did anything interesting with those characters either.
A new show where cosmo and wanda get paired with a new kid after timmy out grew them was an option they could have gone and I guess now we're seeing if they can manage any success out of this.
