The Jalapeno is awesome in general, really! In later Survival levels, I always try to have a Jalapeno as well as an Imitater Jalapeno - they're really helpful when it comes to dealing with Imps.

Starfish are very good for that challenge.

I originally disliked the Starfruit, but I've actually grown to really like it. At only 125 sun, it's a really good value!

Ah man, the bobsled game was CRAZY! Probably the hardest mini-game, in my opinion. Squash is definitely a life-saver!

That's the problem though, he'd only appeal to people who played PvZ. Everyone else would be like "who's this? Laaaame." We've already seen during the last contest that not a lot of people here have played PvZ (which we could have guessed anyway).

The Sunflower, though, is instantly recognizable to anyone who's stepped outside their house (which contrary to popular believe, is a good portion of the site!). No one would go "who's this?" They'd instead say "Oh a sunflower! And it's smiling! I know sunflowers."

I don't know... if I was a neutral voter who had never played PVZ, I'd take the guy with the saucepan on his head over the generic-looking sunflower any day. That's just me, though!

PvZ players would instantly recognize the that he had to be from PvZ though, and really, Thriller-era Michael Jackson is popular enough that no one really needs to know what game he's from to vote for him.

If Crazy Dave doesn't make the contest (God forbid!), I'll probably try to rally for Thriller Zombie next year. Just imagine how awesome he'd look in a match pic!

Cattails rock, yeah! Definitely the best option for taking out Balloon Zombies; Blover's okay and the Cactus can be somewhat useful at times, but they're nowhere near as good.

The Sunflower is the only character from the game that could win a match, and it'd have to get a pretty good draw. Crazy Dave would be total fodder.

Honestly, I think Crazy Dave is a better choice than Sunflower. Though Sunflower has the "Zombies On Your Lawn" video in her corner, I don't think she would seem especially interesting to those who haven't played PVZ. Crazy Dave, on the other hand, has an awesome name and great character design, which I think gives him more mass appeal; and since you run into him at the very beginning of the game, everyone who's played PVZ will recognize him as well.


Unless we could somehow nominate the Michael Jackson zombie. He might stand a chance, too.

I definitely thought about this! I'm not sure if he'd be eligible, though. Also, for what it's worth, he was replaced by the more generic "Dancing Zombie" in later versions of the game, so he might not be as recognizable.


I need to play this sometime and Steam currently has a sale on it, but Steam's been nickel-n-diming me dry lately and I gotta put a stop to it. I'll try it another time, and reconsider this rally at that time.

I thought about going with a plant or zombie instead. The choices I particularly considered were: Doom-Shroom, Thriller Zombie, Hypno-Shroom, Squash and Tall-Nut. In the end, though, I had to go with Dave - the guy's just too hilarious and likeable not to rally for.

Though it would have been amazing if Tall-Nut got a "manly tear" match pic...

I'll admit, a few months ago I hadn't heard of PvZ at all. Then the girlfriend of the guy who lives in the room next to me told me about it and how much fun she had with it, so I introduced her to Steam and she made me buy it.

She and I are pretty tight friends now. PvZ brings people together like that.

Dude, that's awesome! Always cool to see people bond over gaming, especially when the game in question is Plants vs. Zombies. :D

Sadly, I haven't been able to convince very many people to try it yet. I have, however, gotten a ton of people hooked on Angry Birds; if that game doesn't make the next Games Contest, I'll be bummed!

If there was ever someone who could beat Link, it's him.


For my money, Plants vs. Zombies is one of the best games of the decade; right up there with Meteos, Portal and Contra 4. Over the past few years, there's been a much greater emphasis on casual gaming, but few developers have managed to craft games that both casual and hardcore gamers can enjoy in equal measure - PVZ excels at this, however, and it may just be the crown jewel of PopCap's impressive library. The visual style is a treat, the soundtrack is excellent, the gameplay is wildly addictive and rewarding... and it's easily one of the funniest games I've played, thanks to sharp writing and great characters.

The standout of the cast, though, isn't actually a plant nor a zombie: it's Crazy Dave, the player's neighbor. He's a truly strange fellow who wears a saucepan on his head, sells various supplies from the back of his car, and deeply loves tacos (even paying $1000 for one the player finds). When asked about his motives, he simply replies: "BECAUSE I'M CRAAAAAZY!" I guess that's as good a reason as any!




Best catch phrase since "Do a barrel roll!"


Though he occasionally seems to sympathize with the zombies somewhat (in one game mode, he helps them with their training), he's typically eager to help you out. The plants he sells you are some of the best in the game: Gatling Peas shoot four peas at one time (and look ridiculously awesome as well) Twin Sunflowers produce more sun than a regular Sunflower, and Cob Cannons can launch insanely powerful missiles at an entire cluster of zombies. He also comes up with inventive ways to knock out the zombies (I.E. bowling), and when you play through Adventure mode a second time, he picks out three different plants for you. This puts an interesting spin on the mode, and you may find yourself using and really liking plants you never typically used before.

Oh, and he has an awesome psuedo-cameo in Left 4 Dead 2, another one of the decade's best games!




Best $1000 ever spent.
