Only problem I have with Street Fighter 4 (well, not only, but whatever, it's the one I feel like mentioning) is the art style. Too many characters look too hideous because someone had an infatuation with adding excessive muscle everywhere.

Okay hold on, hold on. Let's not act like T-Rex is someone awesome like, say, Doctor Doom here. A T-Rex is mighty awesome but I don't think it is going to scare a jetpack.

Now Doctor Doom on the other hand would enslave the robots and then punch a T-Rex in the face while laughing.

In fact, screw it.

Doctor Doom vs Robots vs T-Rex in a three-way bout for the universe.

I got Doom.

It says something about your position that you need not only Doom, but all robots ever which he has already enslaved, in order to try to provide a match up for a solitary T-Rex (possibly with a jetpack)

How would a T-Rex accurately guide a jetpack without suitable hands?

Come on, you have to play to your strengths.

If you were a jetpack would you disobey a T-Rex's orders?

Panthera, there's literally an industry that has already gone through that process but no one cares to know about it, for precisely the reasons you said.

Which industry is this?

From: KamikazePotato | #286
Either way, I don't see why it matters. There will always be people that judge stuff only by looks, the industry shouldn't throw its hands up and surrender because of some stupid people.

I never said that the games industry shouldn't try to be better at it (it should try to be better at writing in general, it's not like female characters are the only problem here, they're just a bit more crap than all the rest of the ****), just that convincing people that an improvement has happened is not something the games industry can pull off all that easily no matter what it does.

Because it is often the case, while it is very rarely the case for male characters.

The point is that it doesn't matter how often it actually is, people will assume it to be so even if it isn't. The video game industry could go a year where every single female character in every single game was realistic and well written, and as long as most of them were good looking, there would be a sizable pool of people dismissing them as pure eye candy, and people would still go on about how the video game industry only includes female characters for sex appeal.

Uh, probably no one. Chun-Li is the poster girl for not being a poster girl in fighting games.

This has not played out at all in my experience, I have seen her be directly referred to as purely a sex object quite a few times (not as in "I see her as one", as in "the developers put her there to be one"), as well as quite a few claims that every single female fighting game character ever qualifies (which is obviously going to include Chun, what with her being the most famous example).

From: ExThaNemesis | #256
And again it isn't even really an issue because there's nothing wrong with emphasizing female physical beauty.

The point I'm making isn't about emphasizing female beauty, it's that people will assume that an attractive female character must be solely there to look pretty regardless of whether or not she's also a realistic character whose attractiveness isn't a primary aspect of her role in the story at all.

You can't seriously look at something like, say, every fighting game ever created and tell me that gaming doesn't have serious issues to work out in regards to women.

Fighting games really prove that the issue is not something video games can effectively tackle though. Compare two characters: Chun-li and Zangief. Chun is fairly modestly dressed (sure it's fairly tight, but I just went for a walk around the neighborhood and saw probably at least five women wearing something I'd call less modest), Zangief barely wears anything. Chun doesn't act in a particularly sexualized way, nor is she just some random love interest. Zangief is an irrelevant character (plot wise) with little personality who is constantly posing and showing off his muscles. Chun isn't the most realistically proportioned character ever, but she's closer to realistic than most people in the series as of Street Fighter IV and its fetish for impossible muscles, whereas Zangief is one of the less realistic looking people in the cast.

How many people will say anything about Zangief being there to try to appeal to women (not even whether he does or not, just whether the thought would even cross anyone's mind)? Next to no one. How many people will say Chun is there solely for sex appeal? A fair number. The point is, people have been conditioned to think any moderately attractive female character in fiction *must* be there solely for the sake of looking pretty, while it's hard to make a male character that would even raise eyebrows. This isn't really something video games can address, it's a larger societal issue, namely that there's some messed up assumptions about attractive female characters in general.

I think you're guilty of the same thing Realo is. He's judging all internet metal fans based on SubDiety's comments, while you're grouping together everyone - or half of everyone - based on Lasa.

No? The whole topic has been full of commentary on the list, a fair bit of negative. I opened up random pages and the first three ranking updates from you I saw featured "X is too low" and "the best alliance in hip hop only gets 350" and "this is a strong group besides this garbage". I'm not judging anyone negatively for this - the entire point of commenting on this stuff is to point out agreement and disagreement. I just find it weird that an entire topic can have this going on fine but then as soon as metal fans join in it's somehow bad.

Your top 5 sucks even in the context of just metal, even Operation Mindcrime (the best of the five) isn't top five material (top twenty or thirty, sure)

Three Iron Maiden albums and two Blind Guardian albums. I have no idea if they're in the right order, so speak up, metal fans!

Brave New World being on this list at all, much less that high, is pretty much undeniable evidence that board 8 is insane. Powerslave and The Number of the Beast are unsurprising, though Killers is better than either (but probably isn't on the list, unless I missed it lower). As for Blind Guardian, entirely predictable, Nightfall in Middle Earth is super overrated (extremely bloated with filler and crap).

You shouldn't really have to "buy into" that concept. Fighters in real-life fighting sports don't come out there swinging for a knockout or going for a submission from the opening bell.

Fighters in real life fighting sports don't have almost complete immunity to all but one or two specific attacks their opponent could use. In real MMA or boxing or whatever, you can actually knock someone out early, and do noticeable damage with your safer attacks, in pro wrestling the bulk of moves used never win matches under any circumstances and very rarely prevent someone from getting their usual "second wind" (hey John Cena) and promptly taking you out in one or two signature moves.

actually i disagree on the "wants to win" part - that opens itself to out of character behavior. like... if courage the cowardly dog were nominated, knowing he's in a fight would result in him bailing, not wanting to win. knowing there's a fight should be enough, especially when we're actually MAKING them after all. if a character is super powerful but doesn't want to actually fight then it lends itself to 'well, can the opponent win without fighting directly?' which i think is fine. of course that'd have its own set of problems - the issue of "Well, either they talk him out and win or they don't, pick a fight, and lose." but the idea is being forced to want to win always seemed... unnatural.

The problem with not including the part where the combatants will actually want to win is that its the same as not having the "knows they're in a fight" rule at all. The whole point is who would win in a fight, it doesn't really do anything if you have one person just not fight, they still need to lose a fight for the other person to win. Deliberate giving up defeats the purpose of the contest, it really does need to come down to an actual battle between the two, otherwise its pointless. At the very least, both sides should be assumed to know that nothing will happen until one of them beats the other.

Yeah, pretty much. You need real terrains or you come down to the speeblitzes. You also need to take out the 'knows there's a fight and wants to win' clause because again, speedblitz. Just 'knows there's a fight' should be enough. Otherwise it's all about making fast dudes and that's boring as hell.

This is dumb. "Real terrains" don't do anything but give a random advantage to someone (every single case of arguing the terrain in past MPFC matches has been "well this guy can totally win if we just let him start in a position where he's hidden and get the first attack because the opponent has no idea what's going on" and that's just going to continue), the "knows there's a fight and wants to win" clause is necessary because otherwise we get into stupid arguments about how character A will win because character B just flat out won't even try to defend themselves, the point of this is to have the characters actually fight, otherwise you're just trying to bias the contest against certain personalities by allowing "oh the opponent just won't realize they should try to win until it's too late" crap, it just opens up out of character behavior.

And there's nothing wrong with rules that supposedly encourage speedbliztes, if that's in-character for the entrant in question - it's an entirely valid argument and a useful tactic and entirely in-character for some. With a contest like this, you can deal with them by creating people who aren't complete glass cannons (seriously, most of the anti-speedblitz sentiment has always been people whining that their pet character whose biggest [only] flaw is pathetic durability doesn't get a free pass when fighting an opponent much faster than them who has no reason, in or out of character, to not use their speed advantage).

A Mega Man X aficionado can explain that to you, or even an ordinary Mega Man X fan! If you got the buster upgrade earlier in the game in whichever stage its hidden in, you don't get anything at that part.

Favourite Mega Man series moment...oddly enough I'd have to go with the Mega Man X4 battle between Zero and Iris. The hilariously awful voice acting afterward kind of ruins it but the boss fight itself is pretty cool, I love the music that plays for it, and its probably the only time that the series has ever come close to having any emotional impact to it.
