to piggyback on red's comments on the 9600GT - it's dated, but how big a deal this is to you matters as other parts can pick up the slack it has. even if you get a new one, depending on how up to date your vid card is you may STILL want to keep it to allow the 9600GT to render PhysX. i'd recommend any modern build to field a motherboard with 2 slots for vid cards because it's very, very useful to have that backup option available to you, especially if you're fine with pushing your system for as long as you can get.

and again, to repeat the issue ivy bridge has, at stock levels it has better performance than sandy bridge, yet any decent overclocking job will have it shoot up in temps extremely fast, which is why sandy bridge is gonna stick around for a while. at least, until they do a Gen 2 chip that fixes that problem. if you do intel, i5-2500K is really the best bang for buck, especially if you go look for it at microcenter.

still, 8GB is what i'd say, not 4. it's so damn cheap that it can be bought for almost the same price. >_>;

all sandy bridge chips have intergrated graphics. HD3000.

it sucks. you need an nvidia card. they did it that way so even laptops can run without a dedicated card. Ivy Bridge upped it to HD4000 which still isn't very good but it's at least somewhat passable.

AMD meanwhile made what they call their APUs, also goes by the name their fusion chips, which specializes in this. they managed to fit a CPU and GPU into a single piece, so you have dedicated level graphics mixed with a good quad core. Llano, their current line, is the king of gaming laptops as a result because you simply cannot beat price-performance at that level. on the desktop side better models exist and they're very, very good for the price - literally $150 for a CPU/GPU hybrid gets you a solid chip on both, enough to run 2011's games even. Trinity comes out in a bit over a week with improvements on both, and when crossfired with a decent dedicated vid card it's got the performance of top of the line ones at a fraction of the price, for basically STILL less than what the card would cost, let alone the CPU.

basically, price-performance is AMD's forte, and they can do it in a number of ways. we're hitting a point where intergrated chips aren't all bad, and in AMD's case, are actually quite good within that line.


as for Ivy Bridge-Sandy Bridge, what's worth noting is that Ivy Bridge didn't improve everyting. the vid card was, but you don't want to do that on a desktop (unless again, you're fielding an AMD APU, in which case it is entirely an option), which leaves you with the processor portion, the biggest asset to Intel. and that... while it's better at stock levels, overclocking is in Sandy Bridge's favor due to temperatures. Ivy Bridge runs very hot when you OC it well.

if you have a microcenter near you, go there. they have a LOT of great sales going on, including the above mentioned i5 at heavy discounts. there's a bunch of slickdeals topics on 'em because they're just plain the best store to buy stuff.... only problem is they aren't available to everyone or everywhere.

and the logic behind it is easy - if you put a scenario + take the characters then it's assumed you'll do SOMETHING resembling the original source. if you're the fans of the source and you don't get that, then... it's pretty reasonable to get upset over that. if you expected nothing despite taking that, or if you just know of them in passing, different story.

nobody really complains about the way things go down in SMT games despite throwing ine very mythology possible.

...ah. fair enough. i also don't know what you have against AMD exactly so i figured it should be mentioned as well. if you do extensive photoshop work then it's understandable, but for just about everything else you're looking at comparable performance at a fraction of the price. and having 1200 for a budget is more than enough, especially if you're using some older parts (e.g, the hard drive, keyboard, etc). if money's gonna be tight soon then it may be a good idea to also consider lower numbers as 600-700 gets you anything modern today on high settings too.

K = multiplier's unlocked so you can overclock freely and easily. it's meant to be overclocked.

and i'm pretty sure that in most regards the later i5s were putting up numbers better than the earliest i7s, so yes, it makes a big deal. especially when dealing with the upgraded chips intel just had 3 weeks ago.

also, the first thing you want to decide is budget.

that will determine whether you go Intel or AMD, which is the biggest decision. even if you have a broad range, you can at least set a cap and narrow your parts down that way.

would wait a little bit right now (1-2 months) while hard drive prices continue to re-adjust for post-flooding prices and we know which of the new ivy bridge chips are worth it, assuming you're going the Intel-Nvidia route.

if you aren't (aka, budget counts) then wait a bit to see how the Trinity APUs do for themselves and how well they crossfire with dedicated cards. can also see how well performance is compared to their other high end chips, to see if the CPU half of the chips are at all comparable to some of their more recent entries.


both ways you'll be future proof for quite some time. NVIDIA isn't the must-have anymore either for the high end as it wasn't too long ago when AMD took the crown of beastiest GPU, though since then NVIDIA took it back. it's a good idea to start understanding what you're looking for, however. i7s are the high end but just about nobody needs them and i5-2500K was the ideal intel processor for 99% of people. probably isnt' anymore, or won't be for long, due to Ivy Bridge's release.

though it's more troublesome that you'd consider thinking that M = AO because they aren't the same. M is a suggested age of 17, just like rated R is, but it is not a hard number or limit. AO = hard number. AO also is adults, M can include minors (and does within its age recommendation). there really isn't gonna be a company policy that tries to force M as 18 unless they want to come under attack. <_<;

TS2 is praised quite highly because it's both difficult and fun. it's quirky, interesting, and just the kind of game to chill and have a good time with. TS3 isn't as fun and takes a more serious tone, which... doesn't fit as well as 2 as a result.

TS4 being shopped around in 2008 doesn't surprise me as a problem - Crysis 1 was MUCH more ambitious than Crysis 2. the specs on some games you see in 2008 FPS are ridiculous for PC as well, look at Vegas 1 or Crysis 1 (same specs as Vegas 2, higher specs than Crysis 2). optimization happened in the following years and prices should've dropped notably as well. still not CHEAP, but certainly managable. if you want something extremely ambitious you will have problems, but games like Demon's Soul were financially successful, let alone the sequel, and it looks good enough. if they tried to shop it around now they probably would have much less issues and they'd have a notably bigger base with the sharp increase in PC gaming as well.

i find this hard to believe honestly.

also, Homefront did do well. it didn't meet the initial expectations, which is why it was percieved to do badly, but it sold a very good amount. they got nailed with bad reviews but it's sequel still is one of the few games THQ is still working on.

and BF3 was by every measure a big success, not "okay." EA's absolutely thrilled with the numbers that game has put up. suggesting that's just okay is... very, very wrong. Battlefield, Halo, and COD all sell incredibly well. suggesting any of those are just okay is just.... wrong.

the most basic reason why you can tell he's exaggerating is simple - sequels. you don't go HEY LET'S MAKE A SEQUEL on a loss.

also on the matter of 50/50 booking - it sucks when that's what seriously happens. that's the basis of cena/orton and why they have the number of titles they do, that damn feud padded both of their numbers by like 5 each.

but something like 60/40 or even 70/30 is good. even if you want to play it straight, to give the illusion of 60/40 is far better than what we get from guys pulling a superman in a match.

oh i definitely agree with the idea that APIs shouldn't be copyright and that it's obvious as **** that you can't. and the judge does try to get into it a bit. however that's not just an issue within our court system, but was, for the longest time as well, in Europe's.

thing is they resolved it in the highest court to say APIs aren't. and that paints a real nasty picture for oracle here because google can literally shift business over there if they felt like it and be okay.

ars tech has been really nice with the google/oracle coverage. also, it wasn't a procedural blunder as much as they were trying to add stuff. rundown went:
- oracle makes the claim, department of patents says okay we'll look into it to see if it's doable.
- oracle moves forward with case despite full knowing and being told that it's in the wings.
- case starts
- ruling of okay you can make your claim work out
- oracle tries to bring it in now but judge says no, you already knew the answer was no when you started so stop that.

and the judge specifically went down after the EU Supreme Court ruling to this case just yesterday. which is good for the judge because he's not BS'ing either one.

i.... wouldn't be so quick to say that the vita has "more and better." let's not forget that the Vita launched in December over in Japan, Feb over here. if you take the former you're looking at 5 months into its life - and 5 months into the DS' life would be Septmeber 2011, where it already was starting to hit its stride as it murdered from month 5 to 9. reason for using Japan as a more logical base comes from the person who said this in the first place - i'd expect Shiggy to be much more familiar with how the system's games are over there than over here. Vita... honestly loses that battle. it's not that the 3DS was particularly STRONG for the first 4 months, but between the price drop + the quickly improving library it wasn't BAD as far as launch systems go. and before it finished 9 months it pretty much became one of the best first years a system had - and that was before Kid Icarus.

if you go by the US release then by that point the 3DS did have SSF4, Ghost Recon, OoT (June release - 3 months), DoA, Monkey Ball, and one or two more. yeah, nothing really standout in that grouping save the N64 upgraded port, but that's also a problem the Vita has right now, with similar level games for the smaller titles too; it doesn't help that a lot of the games are either ports or games that might as well be ports because the dev took on the "handheld entry" route, similar to how the PSP went (see: R&C, AC, GoW) with a lot of its titles. stuff like Ace Combat X for the PSP was a rarity in that the handheld entry was every bit as good as the console one.


i do agree sony won't be dropping the price, and a memory card bundle would be a start, but that just resembles the way the PSP went: weak start, a barren middle, a fantastic end of its life that actually EXTENDED the system by two years. and sony will most certainly be happy if the Vita turns out to be as successful as the PSP was. just that you can expect a lot of the same criticisms as well as the same problems.
