For those that miss the World War 3 PPV...

The best match of the night was easily Ultimo Dragon/Rey Mysterio Jr. for the J-Crown championship. Great opener that got about fifteen minutes of airtime. It definitely hit the ****+ star range.

The worst match of the night was easily Outsiders/Nasty Boys/Faces of Fear for the WCW World Tag Team Titles. About the best part of the match was seeing Kevin Nash laying down for Scott Hall when both were the legal men (it was broken up however.)

The surprise of the night was the Nick Patrick/Chris Jericho match. I didn't have high hopes for it, but it was actually pretty entertaining, mostly because it was short, Nick Patrick was so over the top it was funny, and Chris Jericho was involved.

The disappointment of the night had to go to Psicosis/Dean Malenko for the Cruiserweight Championship. While not a bad match, it was unlike the Rey Mysterio/Dean Malenko matches from earlier in that year. Instead of a high flying meets mat based match, it was pretty much a chain wrestling contest. Still, **1/2 for something that like that isn't nothing to cry about.

The 60 Man Battle Royal was pretty much a clusterf***. The last few minutes though really got the crowd pumped since it was Lex Luger vs. four nWo guys (Hall, Nash, Syxx, and Giant.) It looked like Luger was going to win, but Giant was able to throw both Nash and Luger out to win it.

Also, I should mention that Piper/Hogan had a contract signing for Starrcade 1996. The weirdest part was Hogan wanting to lift up Piper's kilt, but only to show us the scar on his leg from hip replacement surgery. Also, Hogan mocked Piper for having said surgery. That was probably the Hilarious in Hindsight Moment of the Night.

The rest of the PPV was pretty standard fare. Nothing to write home about, but not anything that would end up on Wrestlecrap. I'd give this one a 5.5/10

Check back tomorrow as i review the next edition of Nitro!

Mean Gene in the ring with Flair and Jarrett. Jarrett hypes up his match against Giant at War World 3. Flair finally gets on the mic. They talk on the mic for a few minutes, and Flair says Jeff Jarrett is in the Horsemen, as Sting watches over the events going on in the ring.

Match Seven: Big Bubba w/Jimmy Hart vs. Jim Powers

Another quick contest that sees Big Bubba use his size advantage to down Powers for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Big Bubba

½*

Main Event: Chris Benoit w/ Woman vs. Eddie Guerrero

We get a pretape of Sullivan hyping up his match against Benoit.

Both men start fast and furious for this contest. That doesn’t last long as Benoit is able to use his technical prowess to gain the upperhand on the quicker Guerrero. Benoit uses his various submission holds to weaken Eddie but Eddie is able to turn this around when he counters a powerbomb into a rollup for a quick two. Both men up now exchanging blows, before we get a quick break.

After the break, both men are still going at it, and Benoit seems to be in control. Guerrero tries to regain control after smashing Benoit’s head into the turnbuckle pad, but Benoit doesn’t let up as he hit’s a nice superplex, though it appears Beonit injured himself there. Benoit with a two count. Benoit tries to hit a powerbomb on Guerrero, but Guerrero again counters, but this time sends Benoit over the top rope and onto the floor. Guerrero in control now. He downs Benoit, and is on the toprope now. Guerrero goes for a sommersault, but Benoit dodges and Guerrero is on his feet. Guerrero hit’s a hurricannrana, but Benoit rolls it over into a pinning attempt and gets the win!

Winner by pinfall: Chris Benoit

Another beautiful match that got ten minutes (plus a break.) Seriously, it’s rare these two have a match that isn’t ***+. ***¾ from me.

After the break, and Eric Bischoff is in the ring. He apologizes for what Hogan made him do earlier that night. He says he’s tried everything to get Piper to sign a deal between Hogan and Piper. This statement brings out the Hot Rod! Piper is on the mic. He says he’s here to tell some truths, and that he’s heard a whole lot of lies lately. He then gets a cheap pop from the crowd by stating his first child was born in Charlotte North Carolina. That’s nice. Piper then gets on with the point and accuses Bischoff of being a liar. He claims Bischoff never spoke to his managers, and that he wasn’t even at his ranch in Oregon. He tries to get answers out of Bischoff, and the nWo shows up. The nWo is holding Piper back as Hogan enters the ring and.. hugs Eric Bischoff?!

Hogan on the Mic now and says that Piper is nothing but a coward. He talks down to Piper as the nWo holds onto Piper. These two look like they’re about to go when security, cops, road agents, and everyone else breaks it up. The nWo get out of the ring and Piper is standing there with all the security still in the ring. He’s on the mic, says that something might happen at World War 3, and that is how this episode of Nitro ends.

Two great matches, storylines are pushed, and a huge shocker is revealed: Eric Bischoff has been working for the New World Order. For how long and why? Will we find out on the next Nitro or even the PPV? How will this affect WCW now that a guy in charge is now in cohorts with the enemy? Regardless, this was another great episode of Nitro. Definitely the best one in the last few weeks. Weird, considering this was right before the PPV. 8/10

TV Rating: 3.2

Other Nitro Notes:

1. I'm planning on holding the PPV watchfest Thursday, for those interested. I'll probably IM the regulars before I start, so if you want to watch, be on AIM around 7:00 CDT.

Match Three: The Amazing French Canadians w/Col. Rob Parker vs. American Males (AMERICAN MALES)

… I was wrong. It can get much worse. American Males come out with the American flag. Bagwell waves it around for a few minutes.. Before throwing it out of the ring and onto the ground.

Bagwell and Riggs, seem to be on the same page today. That however doesn’t last long when Riggs accidentally runs head first into Bagwell. The AFC take advantage of the situation and are now in control in this contest. That in itself doesn’t last that long once Riggs gets the hot tag on Bagwell, and Bagwell cleans house. Bagwell is looking good, until Riggs accidentally sends Jacques into Bagwell headfirst, and the AFC steal this one!

Winner by pinfall: The Amazing French Canadians

Bagwell and Riggs argue as we go to break. *½

Match Four: Hugh Morrus vs. Lex Luger

As the match starts, we get a pretape of Arn Anderson, who lashes a verbal assault against Luger.

This is your typical Big guy vs. Luger match Nitro has had recently. Luger is able to manhandle the larger opponent and gets the win with the Torture Rack

Winner by submission: Lex Luger

¾*

We go to Mean Gene in the ring with Lex Luger. Luger hypes up the World War 3 match. As he is shilling the PPV, Sting comes in from the crowd with bat in hand. He pushes the bat against Luger, then gives the baseball bat to Luger, then leaves. Gene tries to get a few words with Luger, but Luger doesn’t talk to him.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan

We go to WCW Saturday Night where Schiavone is interviewing Nick Patrick and his attorney Adam Sharpe. Jericho and Teddy Long are brought in. Sharpe notes that Jericho’s father was a ‘goon’ (Hockey, not Something Awful.) Apparently, this is all a set up for a match between Jericho and Nick Patrick, where Jericho will have one hand tied behind his back, and it will be at War World 3.

Match Five: Johnny Grunge vs. Chris Jericho

Hey, the ref isn’t Nick Patrick this week. That’s good. Nick Patrick is scouting this match though. That’s… bad?

Jericho and Grunge go at it for a few minutes, before Grunge starts bringing in the tables and chair into this contest. Grunge sets up Jericho on the table, looks to put him through, but Jericho gets out of the way, hits Grunge with a Missile dropkick, and wins.

Winner by pinfall: Chris Jericho

Jericho is being interviewed by Mean Gene. Teddy Long comes out and tries to apologize, but Jericho says it doesn’t matter, that he can beat Patrick with one arm tied behind his back.

After the timeout, we go to the announce booth with Bischoff and Heenan. They talk for a few minutes, before the nWo music hits, and Hogan, Vincent, Dibiase, and Elizabeth come out. It appears they are going to the announce booth, which prompts Heenan to run off. Hogan gets Bischoff to say various things, like Hogan is richer than Piper, that Piper is a coward, and that Hogan is the biggest name in wrestling. After Bischoff says all that they leave. Hmm, odd.

Mean Gene is at the entranceway again, and he is interviewing DDP now. DDP talks for a few seconds before the remainder of the nWo show up Hall, Nash, and Syxx says DDP doesn’t know. Know what? They don’t really say. Giant asks why they don’t just destroy DDP like they did to all of Hogan’s friend. Nash says something beautiful is gonna happen tonight. Hmm..

Match Six: Bobby Eaton vs. Jeff Jarrett

Pretty much a squash match here. Ric Flair comes out as Jeff Jarrett is finishing Eaton up with a figure four.

Winner by submission: Jeff Jarrett

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
November 18th, 1996
Arena/Location: Florence Civic Center Florence, South Carolina
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

We kick off this edition of Nitro with Hall and Nash in the ring, having apparently already beaten down the Nasty Boys and High Voltage. Nash makes his way to the announcers, with Hall behind him. Nash makes reference to Tony laughing at his joke the week prior. Nash threatens and yells at Tony for a few seconds because of it, before they get to hyping up the triangle match between them, the Nasty Boys, and Faces of Fear at War World 3. They eventually leave the announcer’s desk, and say since they’ve already beaten up one of the two teams, they might as well beat up the other team, As they are walking to the back, the Faces of Fear come from nowhere and start attacking The Outsiders! They brawl for several seconds, before they all make their way out of the exit, still going at it.

After the timeout, we go back to the announce desk with Larry and Tony, and Tony explains what went down before the show started. After we are shown what happened, Tony is furious with Zbyszko, wondering why he didn’t come to his aid. Larry tries to calm him down, but Tony takes off his headset and leaves ringside.

Match One: La Parka vs. Juventud Guerrera

Aw, he’s not the ‘chairman of WCW” yet. Regardless of that, this should be a great opener.

La Parka is able to control the smaller Guerrera in the early going of this contest. After a few minutes of Zbyszko calling the action alone, Mike Tenay finally comes down to ringside.

Remainder of Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Mike Tenay

Despite La Parka’s early advantage, Juventud is slowly gaining ground against his larger foe. Juventud firmly gain control after he breaks up the Mexican surfboard and hit’s a beautiful missile dropkick on Parka. Juvi tries using his speed and arsenal to finally down Parka, but Parka always gets up each time. It looks like Juvi has him after a rolling DDT off the top turnbuckle, but AGAIN La Parka kicks out at two. Guerrera has La Parka up on the top turnbuckle, and it appears that Juvi is going for a spinning toprope hurricannrana, but La Parka blocks it! Parka hits Juvi with a La Parkinator for the win!

Winner by pinfall: La Parka

Excellent TV match to start off Nitro. No break, and ten solid minutes of action definitely drove this high up on the star card. ***½

We get a video package of the J-Crown champion Ultimate Dragon. The package was basically their way of hyping up Dragon’s eight titles he held at the time. They note that tonight, he’s going for number nine.

Match Two: Ultimate Dragon w/Sonny Onoo vs. Dean Malenko© for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

As this match starts up, we get a pretape of Rey Mysterio Jr. He hypes up a potential ‘rubber’ match for the title against Dean Malenko very soon. Yes please!

These two men fight four about four minutes, before Sonny Onoo gets on the top rope to try and distract Malenko. Malenko throws Ultimo Dragon at Sonny Onoo and.. DQ?! Ah dammit.

Winner by DQ: Ultimo Dragon (Malenko retains)

The crowd hated that ending, and I do as well. This was shaping up into a good match, too. *¼

After a commercial break, we get footage of the previous Nitro between Harlem Heat and The Amazing French Canadians. Sister Sherri tries to knock out Parker, but fails. Okay.. We are informed that those two teams will go at it at World War 3. If Harlem Heat wins, Sherri gets five minutes in the ring with Parker. Ew.

Parker is dressed up as a Legionnaire. The Amazing French Canadians sing the National Anthem of Canada for a few seconds. Nothing can possibly sound worse than those two crooners.

Back to the announce booth, and Eric Bischoff throws it to the music video and wow. I can’t describe it. Just watch it:

After the video is described, the announce booth has a few freeze frames of the video, most notably a sign of the Hollywood Bowl that save ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper vs. Hulk Hogan. The announcers wonder if Piper’s wanted this match since 1992. Right before they put Dark side of the Moon record on and start playing Wizard of Oz, Hogan, Giant, Vincent, Ted Dibiase, and Elizabeth come out. Elizabeth is dressed up in a sexy Santa outfit. I approve. Hogan asks for the spotlight to hit him like he has the last few weeks. Hogan talks about everyone having the Christmas spirit. He says Santa with Muscle is breaking box office records. He then cuts a promo on Piper, saying he hasn’t heard a word from him. Ted Dibiase gets the mic, and says that Hogan should entertain the crowd by doing his posedown, which he does. That, like it has the last two Nitros, ends the show.

The Piper music video was.. Man. I think that could hit Rick Astley size meme proportions if more people ‘discover’ this. Aside from that, it was a pretty good Nitro. Good buildup to World War 3, good matches, and I approve. 7.5/10

TV Rating: 3.7

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Chris Benoit has come out to no less than two different themes the last few weeks. Sometimes it’s the Horsemen theme, other times it’s his stock music entrance. Hell, he came out to one a few shows back, and after he won his match, he left to different music!

2. For those that do not know, the J-Crown was formed by New Japan Pro Wrestling as a way to unify eight different Jr. Heavyweight/Cruiserweight titles. What’s really interesting is that the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship was one of the eight titles Ultimo Dragon had, though apparently no one realized this. (Technically speaking, the WWF Light Heavyweight title wasn’t officially a title in WWF until 1997.)

3. It should be noted that the nWo shirts they are wearing has a website bearing the URL nwowrestling.com Of course, the website now (along with WCW’s website) don’t work anymore, instead it goes to some generic site that squatters took over. Shame.

4. Tony (or ‘Count’ Schiavone as Hall and Nash called him) actually laughed at the joke Nash made. He tried to cover it up with a facepalm, but he could hardly contain himself.

After the break, we go to the phone with Lee Marshall who is in Florence, South Carolina hyping up the Nitro that will be there next week. He says that he’s judging a Bobby Heenan lookalike contest. The contestants aren’t good, THEY’RE GREAT!

Match Five: The Amazing French Canadians w/ Col. Rob Parker vs. Harlem Heat w/ Sister Sherri

Bischoff notes that the meeting he was supposed to have with Piper last Tuesday failed, and that he’ll try again tomorrow in California. That’s a shame.

We cut to the back where the Nasty Boys are trying to get into the arena. Apparently, they aren’t on the list to get into arena. Doug Dellinger, WCW’s main road agent talks to the Nasty Boys, and tells them they aren’t getting into the arena. They turn around and leave, and are talking to someone.. Who I can’t tell. Bischoff and crew know who it is, but aren’t giving any names.

Back in the ring, apparently Sherri got in the ring, and caused a DQ?

Winners? By DQ: The Amazing French Canadians

N/R

Match Six: Konnan vs. Chris Jericho

Nick Patrick is the referee here. Mike Tenay notes that Chris Jericho’s father is former NHL player Ted Irvine.

Konnan has an upperhand over the smaller Jericho for the majority of this bout. Konnan however can’t quite put the smaller man. This does lead to Jericho slowly gaining ground over Konnan and seems to be getting in control to win this.. When he accidentally hits Nick Patrick and causes an immediately DQ.

Winner by DQ: Konnan

*½ counting the crap ending.

We immediately come back from break and are already in another match!

Match Seven: Miguel Perez vs. Juventud Guerrera

Miguel Perez, for those that don’t know was in Los Boricuas and is mostly known for his body hair. I may have been mistaken, but I could have swore I heard a shave your back chant from the crowd.

Perez in control for the majority of this bout, mainly due to the devastating looking powerbomb on the outside of the ring to Juventud Guerrera. Guerrera however seems fine and looks to be coming back in this match, but Perez gets out of the way of the Juvi’s splash, then gets the win.

Winner by pinfall: Miguel Perez

Surprisingly good match that didn’t get but five minutes. For what it was, though, I liked. **¾

Ted Dibiase and Vincent are standing in the crowd where Sting was at earlier. Vincent has an nWo shirt in his hands. Ted Dibiase says that Sting did the nWo’s dirty work for taking out Jarrett, because they were going to do the same thing because he refused their offer. He says that Sting’s already wearing their colors, all he needs is the T-Shirt.

Main Event: Faces of Fear w/Jimmy Hart vs. American Males (AMERICAN MALES)

American Males seem to be on the same page to start this week off. Bischoff informs us that the tape the kid sent in earlier is actually a music video made by Piper. This I got to see.

Faces of Fear practically destroy Scotty Riggs. Bagwell doesn’t even take his intro attire off. Riggs falls to a heel kick to give the Faces of Fear the win.

Winners by pinfall: Faces of Fear

Bagwell just leaves Riggs in the ring and goes to the back, as Hart gets on the mic, and demands the WCW executive committee give the Faces of Fear a shot at the WCW Tag Team titles at World War 3 (instead of the Nasty Boys.)

Match Three: Ciclope vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.

Ultimo Dragon is at ringside with quite a few title belts. Unless I’m mistaking, that is all the titles he won in the J-Crown. That’s a lot of gold.

Nice contest in the early going. Ciclope hits Rey Mysterio with a beautiful sunset flip over the ropes powerbomb move that really got the fans going. After that move, we cut to a shot of Dean Malenko who is watching this contest from the entranceway. After a few more minutes, Psicosis is now behind Malenko watching this match. Tony notes that Psicosis and Malenko will go at it for the Cruiserweight Title at World War 3.

Mysterio gets back in things, and ends this bout with a nice hurricanrana on Ciclope for the win

>Winner by pinfall: Rey Mysterio Jr.

Dean Malenko turns around and stares down Psicosis briefly, before Psiocsis walks away.

Nice quick match that definitely got the crowd pumped and excited. ***¼

After the break, Tony shills the WCW website. Tony calls it wcw.wrestlingcom. I’d insult Schiavone for making such a dumb mistake, but back in 1996, I’m sure most everyone who hadn’t seen much of the internet had trouble with the URL. This actually segues into Hall, Nash, and Syxx coming out, (along with the nWo: Blue Collar stable) to hype up their appearance at the CableAce award ceremony. The group make their way over to Tony and Larry. Larry and Hall jaw for a few seconds, before Hall repeats that Hogan, Hall, and Nash will be at the CableAce awards.

Nash now has a headset on, and tells Zbyskko he’s got a nice outfit on (Hawaiian shirt and pants), then asks him if he got a cup of soup with it. Odd joke. Nash tells the audience at home that the nWo plans on taking over Nitro and making it nWo Nitro, and that it’ll be very soon. Well, thirteen months after this is kind of soon if you go at the speed I do.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan

Apparently, Tony and Larry left the announce desk before they were supposed to, so there is no intro to hour two.

Match Four: Scott Norton vs. Lex Luger

We get a pretape of Arn Anderson who cuts a promo on Lex Luger.

After a few moments of the contest at hand, we cut a camera cut to Sting in the rafters. Luger and Norton have a typical brawl you’d expect from these two. Luger is selling an arm injury after Norton works over that arm. Despite the ‘injury’ Luger is able to get Scott Norton up for the Torture Rack and wins!

Winner by submission: Lex Luger

¾*

We go to the announce booth, as they shill the World War 3 PPV, most importantly the 60 Man Battle Royal. After they talk about the PPV, we get a video of earlier that night where Sting attack Jeff Jarrett from behind.

After the video, we go to the ring where Mean Gene is interviewing Lex Luger. Gene asks Luger what Sting has been doing. Luger claims he doesn’t know what has been going on. He said he hasn’t said anything to Sting in a few months. He says he needs Sting to help carry the WCW banner against the nWo. Mean Gene then throws it to a break.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
November 11th, 1996
Arena/Location: Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg, FL
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

Tony and Larry are back to their usual spot at ringside as they welcome us to two full action pack hours of WCW Nitro! Tony and Larry inform us that Sting hasn’t been seen in the building. Tony and Larry hype up the card, before they show us a video from the week before with Jarrett, Benoit, and Mongo (with the women.) This video actually leads us to our opening match!

Match One: Jeff Jarrett vs. Chris Benoit w/ Woman

Tony notes this could be an classic encounter, and I think that’s a fair assessment. Let’s just hope it stays that way.

Before the match starts, we get a video from Kevin Sullivan, who is hyping up the feud between him and Benoit that has been going on for a while now. That’s lovely.

Decent contest between these two men. Both men get some offense in, but it appears that Jarrett has the upper hand as he throws Benoit out of the ring. He’s doing the Flair strut as Sting enters the ring and attacks Jarrett from behind! He hits Jarrett with the Scorpion Deathdrop, much to the crowd’s enjoyment. The referee calls for the bell.

Winner by DQ: Jeff Jarrett

Everyone seems to be confused as to why Sting randomly attacked Jarrett. Apparently, Tony just forgot about Jarrett calling Sting out for ‘leaving’ WCW behind in that video from the week before.

*¾. It was good while it lasted, but the DQ ending sucked.

After a quick break, Tony is talking about Ric Flair’s injury and his surgery, when suddenly this random guy walks up to the announce booth and tries to give Tony some sort of package. Security takes him away, but he gets away long enough to throw the package on the announce desk. As he’s being dragged away again, Tony opens it up, takes out a letter, and says something about a tape from Europe in 1992, about how Piper wants Hogan? I dunno, this seemed really strange.

We get a video of Ric Flair in Birmingham Alabama at the office of Dr. James Andrews, whom has worked on various athlete’s injuries over the years. Apparently Ric Flair’s injured his left shoulder, and Dr. Andrews did surgery on it, set to porno music. Andrews notes that Flair may be back to WCW in four months time.

Match Two: Malya Hosaka vs. Zero w/Sonny Onoo

Ah, another first round match for the WCW Women’s Championship. Zero, if I didn’t mention it on the previous Nitro, is wearing silver and black facepaint. The way she’s painted up, it looks like she has an Iron Cross on her face. Weird.

Malya Hosaka tries valiantly to knock the larger Zero down, but fails miserably. Hell, Zero doesn’t even sell Malya’s attacks. Hosaka is pinned after two minutes (and after a powerbomb.)

Winner by pinfall: Zero

SQUASH.

We go to Diamond Dallas Page who’s at the entranceway with Mean Gene! Mean Gene is back in business! Mean Gene notes that DDP use to be buddies with Nash and Hall back in the day, and that they are trying to recruit him. DDP says that while he used to manage Hall, and team with Nash, that he isn’t their friend nor is he trying to get into the nWo. This prompts Hall and Nash to come out! Hall and Nash try to recruit DDP, but DDP doesn’t seem rather willing. He seems more upset than anything that his ‘two buddies’ waited to call him when he was the eighth guy. They banter for a few minutes before Mean Gene sends it to a commercial break!

That actually was a huge deal. Especially since Piper was known as a guy that just would not be pinned, which made him the perfect person to fight Hogan. I think he only got pinned something like 5 times in his career.

I meant from a high quality match point of view. I know that the match would be a pretty big draw at the time, but no one would go in expecting to see Bret/Owen.

We go to the announce booth where Tony talks about Eric Bischoff being in Portland Oregon. Bischoff is on the phone talking about what happened with the negotiations. Bischoff claims that Piper’s attorneys and management and WCW hit a snag in contract negotiations. He said that he wasn’t sure what it was, but he’ll continue things with Piper himself next week. Interesting.

We get a video from Slim Jim’s Halloween Havoc of the Hogan/Piper confrontation. Basically showing everything that happened that wasn’t shown the week before.

The announcers talk about the match for a few more seconds, before the nWo’s music hits. Hogan does the worst torture that I have ever seen on a wrestling show: He had a clip of Santa’s with Muscles and showed it to the fans watching at home. Hogan claims that it will be an Academy Award winner. Sure. Hogan then rambles about Ted Turner and him being at the Cableace Awards. He claims he’s going to beat up Turner and still his invite, since he hasn’t gotten his own. After that, he goes on about the nWo being the best in the world. He claims that Piper has no heart and doesn’t want to fight Hogan. The show ends with Hogan doing his typical posedown.

Some good matches, some mediocre ones. A few storylines were pushed pretty well. Not the best of Nitro, but not horrible either. I’d say it was just above average. 6/10.

TV Rating: 3.4

Other Nitro Notes:

1. The commentators put over the Piper/Hogan match as the match of the year/decade/century/millennium. I think they may be a bit off on that one

2. I'm planning on having the War World 3 watchfest next Thursday. I know it's a good deal away, but I'm kinda need a little time off from watching Nitro everyday. Every other day is working fine though.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan

We get a video of the week before highlighting the Giant/Jarrett feud that’s brewing.

We go to the entranceway where Mike Tenay is interviewing Jeff Jarrett, with Mongo, Debra, Woman, and Benoit all out there as well. Jarrett says that WCW should put all their differences aside and get rid of the nWo.

After the break, the commentators talk about Nitro, before they throw it to Lee Marshall who is in St. Petersburg, Florida hyping up Nitro from there next week from the Bay Front Civic Center.

Match Five: Reina Jubuki vs. Madusa

This is the first match in the WCW Women’s championship tournament.

It’s always weird to see a good women’s match in 1996, then turn to what the WWE offers today and see how horrible it is. Jubuki is able to maintain control over Madusa for the majority of the contest. Zero with her manager Sonny Onoo come out and ‘scout’ out who she may have to go against in the next round. After a few more minutes of nice action, Madusa wins this one with a headscissors into a pin.

Winner by pinfall: Madusa

**½ Good women’s wrestling.

Match Six: M. Wallstreet vs. Chris Jericho

The veteran Wallstreet is able to use his knowledge on the younger and less experienced Chris Jericho. After several times trying (and failing) to use his speed against Wallstreet, he finally lands a nice missile dropkick on Wallstreet, only for Mr. Wallstreet to roll out of the ring. Jericho follows him, but Wallstreet able to use his veteran skills to keep Jericho at bay. Both back in the ring now, and Jericho hit’s a rollup from out of nowhere for the win!

Winner by pinfall: Chris Jericho

Mike Tenay is interviewing Alan Sharpe and Nick Patrick. Before Nick Patrick (or his attorney) can get a word in, Jericho is there, accusing Patrick of being in the nWo and not being injured. Teddy Long comes out and is yelling about Patrick’s poor refereeing skills. The lawyer claims Teddy Long was suspended as a referee. They go at it for a few more seconds, before we cut to a break.

We get a quick video of Luger chasing Sting out of the arena, the week before. The announcers note that the next match is a return match of the main event from the Previous Nitro. That of course being..

Main Event: Booker T w/Sister Sherri vs. Booker T

Lex Luger is able to control Booker T for the early going, but Booker is able to come back (with the help of Sister Sherri, of course.) Things turn around again when Booker T is caught on the top rope and Luger uses the rope to hit a low blow on Booker T. Luger tries to go for the Torture Rack, but Booker T blocks it. Parker comes out and is talking to Sister Sherri, while Booker T hits Luger with a enzuguri. Parker is on the top rope, distracting Booker T, and Luger takes advantage by hitting a clothesline and getting the roll up for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Lex Luger

*½ due mostly because of Booker T’s athleticism. ..

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
November 4th, 1996
Arena/Location: Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

Tony and Larry welcome us to Monday Nitro. As they welcome us, the camera immediately cuts to Sting, who is hanging out in the rafters of the arena. Not only that, but Ted Dibiase, Giant, and Vincent are all watching Sting.. Watching them. Tony and Larry are at the regular announce booth this week, which is due to the fact that Eric Bischoff is actually in Portland Oregon talking to Piper about his contract. He’ll be on the phone later tonight to update us on the situation. Also, the newest title added to WCW is on the announce desk: The WCW Women’s Championship. Yes, it existed. Larry and Tony discuss Piper and Hogan for a few more minutes, before we go to our first match!

Match One: Brad Armstrong vs. Marcus Bagwell (MARCUS BAGWELL!) w/ Scotty Riggs (SCOTTY RIGGS)

Back and forth contest going on. Armstrong is able to knock around Bagwell in and out of the ring at one point. Bagwell comes back however, knocking Armstrong out of the ring himself, then hitting him with a flying crossbody. They both get back in the ring, and Armstrong tries to mount an offense, but Bagwell is just too much for him. Bagwell gets the win with another crossbody.

Winner by pinfall: Marcus Bagwell

*¾ from me. That flying crossbody was pretty shocking.

Match Two: Diamond Dallas Page vs. Ice Train w/Teddy Long

Similar to last week, Hall and Nash are in the crowd cheering on DDP. Tony theorizes that the nWo is trying to recruit him. Hmm.

DDP with the advantage in the early going, but that doesn’t last long as the bigger Ice Train is able to use his strength to keep DDP down, though he can’t quite pin him, either due to not hitting his primary finisher, or Nick Patrick’s slow count. The match ends as Ice Train throws DDP out of the ring, Hall and Nash enter the ring to beat up Train with their belts while Nick Patrick is checking on Page. Train no sells the beating he just took, DDP enters the ring and hit’s the diamond cutter on Train for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Diamond Dallas Page

¾* No selling a several hits to the back with a belt isn’t something we should see.

Match Three: Scotty Riggs (SCOTTY RIGGS) w/ Marcus Bagwell (MARCUS BAGWELL) vs. Dean Malenko© for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Why the f*** do I have to hear that theme song three times?!

Syxx and the blue collar show up at the early going of this contest. Malenko stays in control for the majority of this contest, much to the frustration of Bagwell. The match ends with Bagwell throwing Riggs back into the ring after Malenko threw him out, and Dean wins with a cradle.

Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Dean Malenko

Postmatch, Bagwell and Riggs have a few words with each other. Hmm.. Heel turn? *¼

Match Three: Hector Guerrero vs. Chris Benoit w/ Woman

Man. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that Hector and Eddie were twins. I know they aren’t, but man.

We get a pre tape interview from Kevin Sullivan hyping up his match against Benoit at World War 3.

Great match between these two men. In fact, it is almost like watching Eddie and Benoit, which makes this whole experience sort of bizarre. Hector has the advantage throughout the contest, but he falls short of winning once Woman interferes and gives this to Benoit.

Winner by pinfall: Chris Benoit

Great TV match that got ten minutes. These two went at it like they‘ve fought hundreds of times before… Which they probably have. ***½

Back from a break, Bischoff tells us we’re going to get an unedited and unabridged version of what happened the night before between Piper and Hogan. We get that video of what they said at Halloween Havoc. It however does end a bit early. When we go back to the arena, Hollywood Hogan comes out with Giant and Ted Dibiase.

Hogan is on the mic for a few minutes, talking about how Savage and Piper were scared of him. Said that he saw fear in Piper’s eyes the night before. He hands the mic over to Dibiase, who states that the nWo is getting strong every day. And that we haven’t seen nothing yet. We end Nitro with Hogan doing his typical posedown.

This is probably the weakest Nitro I’ve seen since the arrival of the nWo. The matches were below average, and while a few storylines were pushed ahead, it didn’t really feel like everyone was on their ‘A’ game. 4.5/10

TV Rating: 3.6

Other Nitro Notes:

1. AC Green of the Phoenix Suns was at ringside and jawed off to several people during the night. He was also wearing an nWo shirt, which the commentators thought was off.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan

Match Five: High Voltage vs. The Amazing French Canadians

These two team fight for several minutes, but the Nasty Boys come out and beat them both up.

No contest due to interference

Nasty Boys cut a promo on the nWo and Hogan. They say they may not be liked or wanted, but they don’t care. Knobbs says they’ve been nasty since before WCW was a thought in someone’s mind. Knobbs statement contradicts WCW’s statement that they’ve been around since 1905. Though technically, I think that statement only refers to the WCW World Title, which is partially true (considering it’s based of the NWA world title, which traces it’s lineage back to that time.) Regardless, they talk bad about Hogan, then we go to a break.

Match Six: Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Jimmy Graffiti

Another decent contest between these two. Jimmy Graffiti is a lot more talented than he first appears. Mysterio wins this one with a springboard hurricanrana into a pin.

Winner by pinfall: Rey Mysterio Jr.

**¼ for a good albeit quick match.

We go to the announce booth where they hype up the Eddie Guerrero/Chris Benoit next. They mention both men are injured, however.

Lee Marshall is in Grand Rapids, Michigan and hyping up the show from there next week.

Match Seven: Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Benoit w/ Woman

These two start up this contest and… NEVERMIND THAT S***, HERE COMES MONGO! Mongo and his wife Debra are out to watch over Benoit (apparently from the Dungeon of Doom.)

We get a tape of Sullivan and Hart. They cut a quick promo on Benoit for a few seconds.

This isn’t the typical goodness between these two, due to them both selling injuries. Benoit is in control for the majority of the contest, but Guerrero is able to get a hope spot in, but fails to capitalize when both men go down. Woman distracts Nick Patrick, while Mongo comes in and bashes Eddie in his injured ribs with the briefcase. Benoit covers him for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Chris Benoit

*½. Like I said, both men were selling injuries, so it didn’t have the typical goodness.

Tony is at the entranceway as Nick Patrick makes his way down. Looks like he has his lawyer Alan Sharpe with him. Alan Sharpe claims that Chris Jericho injured Nick Patrick’s neck, and that’s why he was doing a slow count in the Hogan/Savage match. Jericho comes out, and calls Nick Patrick a liar. The lawyer asks Jericho if he has anger problems. Well, only if you try to shut his arm up in a car, yeah. Teddy Long comes out now, and says Nick Patrick has been sand bagging people. Wonder if that is similar to tea bagging. They argue for a few more minutes before we go to break.

Main Event: Lex Luger vs. Booker T w/ Sister Sherri

We go to a pretape of Col. Rob Parker. He puts on his best Foghorn Leghorn voice and says he definitely didn’t screw up the title match at Halloween Havoc.

Lex Luger in control for the majority of this contest. Booker T however does get some offense in here and there, and even goes for the Harlem Hangover, but Lex Luger moves out of the way and looks to be going for the Torture Rack.. But Sting is in the crowd now! Luger sees him and Luger is heading for Sting! The referee counts Luger out as he makes his way to where Sting was.

Winner by countout: Booker T

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
October 28th, 1996
Arena/Location: American West Arena in Phoenix, Arizona
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

Tony welcomes us as Nitro as per usual. He immediately talks about what happened the night before at Halloween Havoc, more specifically Rowdy Roddy Piper coming out, and informs us that we’ll see most of his debut later tonight. Before we get to that, let’s turn it over to our opening contest.

Match One: Juventud Guerrera vs. Lord Steven Regal© for the WCW World Television Championship

Before this match starts, we cut to the rafters.. And it’s Sting! Now he’s looking more like the Crow Sting we all know and love. Not only that, but the nWo: Blue Collar group comes out with signs and what not and have the propaganda going on. Hell, Syxx is in the crowd with a live mic, and welcomes us to nWo Nitro. He says the WCW Cruiserweight title is coming to the nWo very soon. He then calls out Sting to tell him that he should make the right choice. Odd way to have a promo during a match.

Back to the match at hand, Juventud goes for the 360 splash, misses, and Regal gets the win with a Regal stretch. Huh

Winner, and STILL WCW World Television Champion: Lord Steven Regal

Should I even rate this? Technically it went six minutes, but the in ring action only went about two. Uh… N/R

Match Two: Diamond Dallas Page vs. Mike Enos

DDP with the advantage in the early going. While he has the advantage, we cut to the crowd where Hall and Nash are there, apparently cheering DDP on. Mike Enos however comes back and is able to get the upperhand over the larger Page. Well, he has the advantage until DDP hit’s the Diamond Cutter from out of nowhere and gets the win.

Winner by pinfall: Diamond Dallas Page

Match Three: Jim Powers w/Teddy Long vs. Dean Malenko© for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Dean Malenko stays in control for the majority of this contest. But as soon Jim Powers starts to gain ground, Teddy Long gets on Referee Nick Patrick’s case, making him miss several pinfall attempts by Powers. Nick Patrick finally turns his attention to the ring, and that’s when Malenko hits him with a Backstabber into a pin for the win.

Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Dean Malenko

Long and Patrick again argue for several minutes after the match is over.

Match Four: Ricky Morton vs. Jeff Jarrett

Decent back and forth match that goes on for a few minutes. Jeff Jarrett wins with a figure four leglock.

Winner by pinfall: Jeff Jarrett

As soon as the match is over, Giant gets on the mic, holding ‘his’ United States belt. Giant cuts a promo on Jarrett and the Horsemen, saying that they are just a bunch of rats that stick together.

**

After Giant’s promo, Tony interviews Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett cuts a promo on the Giant, then goes onto cutting a promo on Hogan. He says that a lot of promotions have fallen, but WCW will stand for a long, long time. Yeah… About that

For those that missed Halloween Havoc last night, here are my quick thoughts on the show.

The opener between Rey Mysterio/Dean Malenko was standard fare for them at this time period. In other words, a good ****+ match that got plenty of time. Malenko won the Cruiserweight title back.

Eddie Guerrero/Diamond Dallas Page was another good match. Not quite as good as the opener, but definitely a fun match that was in the ***3/4 territory, even though DDP's Diamond Cutter was a bit off. Also, it turns out the ring DDP won back at the Battle Bowl was 'stolen' by Nick Patrick.

The Jeff Jarrett/Giant match was actually going quite well, that is until Flair interfered and low blowed the Giant, causing a DQ. All the Horsemen came out and celebrated, though Giant won the match.

Chris Jericho/Syxx match was another fun match. Syxx appeared to be sober for this match, and it showed. Both men put on a great match that got plenty of time. The match however ended pretty cheaply when Nick Patrick was purposely doing slow counts of Jericho, yet was okay when Syxx got the win. *** for an otherwise good match.

Luger/Anderson wasn't as bad as you'd expected considering Luger was in this contest, but Luger did come away with the win after using the Torture Rack and chairshots on Anderson. Arn had to be stretchered out of arena.

Mongo and Benoit beat the Faces of Fear, but the Dungeon of Doom came out as soon as the contest was over, beat up Mongo and Benoit. Sullivan had a few words with Woman.

Outsiders/Harlem Heat was another good match with a strange ending. The match ended with Nash hitting Stevie Ray with Col. Parker's cane, Booker T (Who was on the outside of the ring doing nothing) didn't save his brother as Scott Hall got the pin. I think Scott Hall simply took a few seconds too long to cover Stevie Ray. Other than that, it was a good *** match.

The Hogan/Savage match was pretty rough. Hogan spent more time running away from Savage then actually fighting him. Hogan however was able to come back and beat Savage, but only due to massive interference from Giant, Nick Patrick being a cheating ref, and other things.

After the match, Giant threw some water on Hogan to wake him up, Piper came out, and Piper and Hogan had a verbal contest that lasted until (I'm sure) way after the PPV went off the air.

Overall, there were some good matches, some bad matches, and some weird endings. If you discount the Hogan match, this PPV would probably be in the 8+/10 range, but including it in, I'd say this was only 6.5/10. Still, it's a good PPV to watch, just don't watch it for the ending.

And I'm going to be pretty busy this week, so don't expect a Nitro today.

Main Event: Chris Benoit vs. Randy Savage

Savage comes out wearing an all black attire, in street clothes. He sorta looks like he’s dressed up as Undertaker. Bischoff again stops him, and is going to show him another video.

We get a video of Hogan (on the set of 3 Ninjas movie) and it appears they are trying to set up something for Elizabeth to tell Savage she loves him, but she isn’t up for it. Hogan tries to get her to do as he tells her, but she refuses. After a while, Hogan finally cuts a promo on Savage, telling him that he’s ready for him at Slim Jim’s Halloween Havoc.

We go back to Savage, who stays quiet for a few minutes, before saying that he sees that friendships, relationships, and businesses are fragile. Marriage is fragile too. He says Hogan has showed him that life is also fragile. He then leaves and that ends Nitro.

Wrestling wise, this wasn’t a strong Nitro, which makes sense since it’s the show before the PPV. Usually the shows like this rarely have that much in the way of content on it. However, this was the first appearance of the real Sting in nearly a month, and the first appearance of ‘Crow’ Sting, though he doesn’t quite look like he would in the coming months. Not the best Nitro I’ve seen, but it did drive the storylines going into Halloween Havoc quite well. 5/10

TV Rating:3.2 vs. the 2.6 of Raw.

Other Nitro Notes:

1. I feel bad that for all the jobber and no names that appeared in WCW for all those years, Jimmy Graffiti is the one guy I almost recognized by his attire alone. I didn’t remember the name, but I remember that goofy as hell outfit.

2. This is what Sting looked like on his first appearance as ‘Crow’ Sting: external image

3. As per usual, I’m going to have the Halloween Havoc watchfest at around 7:00 PM CDT tomorrow night. I’ll probably IM most of the regulars of this event, as well as have a link to it on this page.

Match Four: Ron Studd vs. Jeff Jarrett

Ric Flair comes out before this contest can get underway. He enters the ring, apparently to talk to Jeff Jarrett. Flair asks Jarrett to do his strut, which he does. Flair then takes off his sports coat and does his own strut. The crowd is easily behind Ric Flair. They face off for a few seconds, before Ric Flair extends the hand, and they shake! Flair leaves, and this match is finally underway.

Studd is able to use his size advantage to knock around Jarrett for a few seconds, but Jarrett comes back with a big suplex on Studd, before he gets him into the figure four and wins.

Winner by submission: Jeff Jarrett

SQUASH

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan

Tony Schiavone is at ringside with Jeff Jarrett now. Jarrett cuts a promo on The Giant, then Ric Flair comes out. Flair cuts one of his typical promos on the nWo. As he does this, the camera cuts over to Giant, who is watching from the balcony.

Match Five: Road Block vs. Lex Luger

Road Block carries one of those road block things on his back to the ring. He sorta looks like Balls Mahoney, but a whole lot uglier. Luger is no longer selling the ribs.. After one week.

We get a pretape interview of Arn Anderson hyping up his match against Luger at Halloween Havoc.

Luger is able to dominate the larger Road Block. He tries to put him in the Torture Rack twice, but he drops him. The third time, he has hime, and Luger wins.

Winner by submission: Lex Luger

½*

We go to Lee Marshall. He’s in Phoenix Arizona, and he’s hyping up the Nitro next week from the American West Arena. That’s nice to know.

Match Six: American Males (AMERICAN MALES!) vs. Harlem Heat w/Sister Sherri and Col. Rob Parker

Again, this is a non title match.

Back and forth contest between these two teams. We cut to the nWo balcony where Scott Hall and Kevin Nash are watching over their opponents at Slim Jim’s Halloween Havoc. American Males look as though they are going to win this one, but Sherri and Parker distract Riggs long enough for Harlem Heat to get the three count and win.

Winners by pinfall: Harlem Heat

** for me.

Match Seven: The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers) vs. The Faces of Fear w/Jimmy Hart

Bischoff informs us that Sting may be in the arena. He was apparently supposed to compete tonight.

The Fantastics put up a valiant effort, but the Faces of Fear’s size and strength put them over as the winners.

Winners by pinfall: Faces of Fears

*¾ from me.

After the break, we go to the video of last week with the pretaped video of Elizabeth talking to Savage. After it is over, Bischoff profusely apologizes about him showing it to Savage.

Match Eight: J.L. vs. nWo Sting w/nWo minus Hollywood Hogan

‘Sting’ dominats JL for a few minutes, using all of the Real Sting’s moves and mannerisms. He has him in the Scorpion Deathlock and.. The Real Sting shows up!

No Contest

Sting is wearing black and white now. Sting beats up on the impostor for a few minutes, and the nWo simply watch as it happens. Sting puts the Bogus Sting in the Scorpion Deathlock, then the now finally enters the ring. However, instead of attacking Sting they simply applaud what he did to their Sting. Dibiase has a mic, and is talking up Sting and putting him over. Both Nash and Hall tell him that he’d be a great asset to the nWo and the deal with be mutually beneficial. My words, not theirs. Sting has the mic and…

“That right there is your cheap imitation. You get what you pay for, don’t you? The real Sting may… or may not be in the price range. The only thing for sure about Sting is that nothing is for sure.”

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
October 21st, 1996
Arena/Location: Mankato Civic Center Mankato, Minnesota
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

Tony and Larry greet us to Nitro, and then start talking about how Nitro ended, with Savage and whatnot. They also show what happened with the Elizabeth video and Savage. They talk about it for a few more minutes, before we go to our first match.

Match One: Bobby Eaton vs. Chris Jericho

Bogus Sting and Syxx are watching the action from the balcony.

Back and forth contest between Eaton and Jericho. Hey, I just heard the first ____ sucks chant in WCW, and it’s directed toward Nick Patrick, the referee of this contest. The veteran Bobby Eaton is able to take control of this contest over the younger Jericho. Eaton tries to end this as he goes to the top rope and hit’s a knee drop on Jericho, but Jericho is up by the two count. Jericho then goes up, hit’s a missile dropkick on Eaton, and gets the win!

Winner by pinfall: Chris Jericho

This match got about eight or nine minutes, and wasn’t a bad opener. I’m sure if these two had fifteen minutes on PPV, they’d produce a great ***+ match, but here I’d only give them **¼.

After the match, Jericho is at ringside with Tony Schiavone. Jericho basically hypes up his match at Halloween Havoc against Syxx. Not Jericho’s best promo, but it was a good hype up.

We get a vignette of the Rey Mysterio/Dean Malenko feud. These two men will again go at it at Halloween Havoc for the Cruiserwight title!

Match Two: Jimmy Graffiti vs. Dean Malenko

Jimmy Graffiti is Jimmy Del Ray, who was one half of the Heavenly Bodies with Tom Pritchard. He also appears to have stolen either Super Calo’s or Public Enemy’s ring attire.

Surprisingly, Jimmy Graffiti is able to hold his own against Malenko, but a poorly executed dive off the top turnbuckle (and subsequent Texas Cloverleaf) gives the win to Dean Malenko.

Winner by submission: Dean Malenko

I didn’t expect much from Graffiti, but he surprised me with his arsenal of moves. **½

Match Three: Diamond Dallas Page vs. Sgt. Craig Pittman w/Teddy Long

As DDP is coming out, they really put over the Diamond Cutter, saying that it was a move that could put down anyone. Man, glad no one stole THAT move from Page.

DDP in control early over the former Marine. Pittman however is able to come back and actually gets DDP to submit to his Code Read armbar, but Teddy Long is yapping at Nick Patrick, so he doesn’t see it! Once the Patrick is paying attention to this match, DDP is already up and hit’s the Diamond Cutter on Pittman for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Diamond Dallas Page

SQUASH

Postmatch, Long and Patrick again argue. Long says his client was yelling at him for distracting the ref, and is blaming Patrick. Patrick says that it’s not his fault he was yapping at him. I got to agree with the ref on this one. Long was on the ropes distracting Nick Patrick.

Tony Schiavone now interviewing Nick Patrick. Patrick puts up his side of the story of what happened in the ring, then Tony started accusing him that he was the nWo’s ref again. Patrick claims that he was in twice the shape of that ref, and that it must be Randy Anderson. Nick Patrick told Tony that if he keeps that up, he’ll end up where the ‘last announcer’ went. Ooo…

After the break, we go to the video of the nWo beating up Ric Flair, then go to the video of Jeff Jarrett talking about the Giant.

Harlem Heat actually able to get the early advantage over the larger and more intimidating Faces of Fear, probably because Jimmy Hart isn’t out there barking orders. Things change however when Barbarian hits that bellly to belly superplex on Booker T. Meng and Barbarian work over Booker T for several minutes, before all four men are in the ring duking it out. As this happens, Hall and Nash make their way through the crowd and are now watching this contest. Both teams stop fighting and confront the Outsiders. The Outsiders choose wisely not to go four on two.

No Contest:

**, but the ending was odd since there was no reason to stop it.

Bischoff talks about the Savage/Hogan match, and that Savage will come back to beat Hogan. After he says his piece, the New World Order comes out. Hogan is on the mic, and says that he thought Savage would have enough dignity to fight. He says that he can push all of Savage’s buttons. He goes on for a few minutes, talks about his movie (which is why he doesn’t have the ‘beard’) and as he is talking, the Nasty Boys (with nWo shirts) come out. They have contracts in their hands and look pretty happy.

Knobbs is talking about the contract, saying that there is apparently a few problems with it. Hogan grabs the contracts, and states that he didn’t sign it. If he didn’t sign the contract, they shouldn’t be wearing the colors, which prompts an nWo beatdown on the Nasty Boys! The New World Order rips the shirts off of the Nasty Boys (thankfully, they’re wearing the Nasty Boys shirts under them) and they spraypaint them.

Hogan says Elizabeth always wanted Hogan, cuts a promo on Savage for Halloween Havoc, then says that he’s going back to Hollywood to film his movie Three Ninjas. The Outsiders and Syxx run off the commentary team and Scott Hall says he thinks the Harlem Heat are actually from Texas. They talk about their matches at Halloween Havoc before the show goes off the air.

Some good matches, and overall good crowd WCW was pushing several of the matches that will be on Halloween Havoc, instead of just the main matches, which is a good thing. The Nasty Boys bit was good, considering I’m not a fan of either man. I do admit that the ending to the main event didn’t really make sense, considering the Outsiders did nothing to interfere, but I understand why it wasn’t clean, since they didn’t’ want either team to look bad. Overall though, I’d give this Nitro a 8/10.

TV Rating: 3.3, which is down from the week before, but I should note that WWF Monday Night Raw hit the lowest rating it had with a 1.8. I don’t think (from looking at the rating wars between the two) that Raw ever tied that or got worse than that.

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Crowd was red hot all night. Though the crowd was hot mainly for the New World Order and Jeff Jarrett.

2. Tony Schiavone actually thanked Jerry Lawler for helping WCW set up a show at the Mid-South Coliseum. For those unaware, Jerry Lawler still competed in Memphis while working with the WWF. The wrestling promotion based out of Memphis at the time, United States Wrestling Association, actually held events at the Mid-South Coliseum on Mondays for many years. If you think it’s odd that Tony Schiavone is thanking a WWF performer for setting up an arena for the rivals, then… you really don’t know much about wrestling in Memphis.

3. Cheetah Kid is wearing the same mask that was used for El Gato on that PPV a few months back. The only name I could for sure connect Cheetah Kid with was Rocco Rock, but obviously that isn’t him. The only other name I could find that connects Cheetah Kid with another wrestler would be Prince Iaukea, but that was in 1999. Whether or not he was him here is probably up for debate.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan

Match Five: ‘Mean’ Mike Enos vs. Randy Savage

Mike Tenay welcomes to hour two, and informs us Eric Bischoff is going to attempt to interview Randy Savage as he’s going to the ring for his match. Bischoff asks Savage about Miss Elizabeth, which segues into a tape of Elizabeth apologizing for what she has done and siding with Hogan because she knows he will use her to hurt Savage.

Savage (who saw this on a TV screen at the entranceway) looks sadden at what he saw. Bischoff wants his response, but Savage doesn’t say anything. He walks around the arena for a few minutes, before he decides to just leave in his limo. Bischoff, who has been standing there trying to talk to him, audibly says s***. I guess.. No match?

After the break, we go to the announce booth where Heenan and Mike Tenay admonish Bischoff for showing Savage that video, that there was already too much s*** on his plate as it was. Hmm…

Match Six: Eddie Guerrero vs. Cheetah Kid

Cheetah Kid gets no intro. As Eddie comes to the ring, we get a pretaped interview from Eddie Guerrero where he hypes up his match against Diamond Dallas Page at Halloween Havoc.

Cheetah Kid able to control Eddie for most of this contest, but Eddie Guerrero comes back after he knocked Kid onto the top turnbuckle, knocked him off, and did the frog splash for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Eddie Guerrero

**

We get a quick call from Lee Marshall who is in Minneapolis Minnesota as there were will be a show there later on in that week. This was also a way to apparently get product placement in for 1-800-Collect.

Match Seven: Big Bubba w/Jimmy Hart vs. Jeff Jarrett

Jeff Jarrett get a huge reaction from the Memphis crowd, which is no surprise considering what his family means to Memphis and wrestling. Bischoff jokes that Jarrett couldn’t sing very well. Nice reference to his other gimmick. Crowd starts off a massive Double J chant, almost louder than the nWo chant from earlier.

Big Bubba with the advantage early on. Hart is apparently jealous of Jarrett’s reception while his was much cooler. Jarrett tries to use his speed and technical wrestling advantage to keep down Big Bubba, and after a few minutes of that he eventually succeeds. He looks to be going for the figure four leglock, but after timely distraction by Hart Big Bubba hits Jarrett with a spinebuster. Bubba punches out Jarrett, Hart throws in his microphone to Bubba, but Jarrett sends a nice dropkick to Bubba which knocks him down and give Jarrett the win.

Winner by pinfall: Jeff Jarrett

Crowd was hot for this match, and both men delivered pretty well. ***

Tony Schiavone at the entranceway with Jeff Jarrett. Tony tells us that Giant and Jeff Jarrett will go one on one at Halloween Havoc. Jarrett cuts a good promo on Giant before we go to the break.

Main Event: Faces of Fear vs. Harlem Heat w/ Sister Sherri and Col. Parker

This is a non-title match. After a quick break, we see Benoit, Mongo and Debra McMichael come out to scout out the Faces of Fear, seeing as how they got a match against them at Halloween Havoc.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
October 14th, 1996
Arena/Location: Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

Tony does his usual greetings to Nitro, before he goes headfirst into the Savage/Elizabeth/nWo stuff that ended WCW Nitro last week.

Match One: Dean Malenko vs. Brad Armstrong

Apparently this is a return match from WCW Saturday Night where Brad Armstrong got a shocking win over Dean Malenko (Shocking, in that Nick Patrick was the official, so I guess all his matches he referees now are shocking.) Also, Patrick happens to be the official here now.

Back and forth match between these two men. Armstrong showing lots of nice offense , more than I expected. Unfortunately, that wasn’t quite enough to put The Man of a 1000 Holds away as Malenko wins this opening bout with a counter into a schoolboy.

Winner by pinfall: Dean Malenko

Good (and relatively quick) TV matchup. I like what I saw here. ***¼

After the break, we get a shot of what was going on out back, and it appears the nWo has arrived.

We get another video of WCW Saturday Night, where Duggan beat M. Wallstreet with a taped fist. Referee Nick Patrick saw the taped fist, and reversed the decision. This sets up...

Match Two: M. Wallstreet vs. ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan

This match feels very reminiscent to their match a few Nitros back. Hell, Wallstreet even gets the tape and is looking to use it against Duggan, but this time instead of Duggan producing his own tape, he just tackles Wallstreet for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Jim Duggan

¾*

Match Three: Hugh Morrus vs. Jim Powers w/Teddy Long

Christ, Jim Powers is making his four consecutive appearance on Nitro. I don’t even think he’s won a match yet.

Jim Powers with the majority of offense over the bigger Morrus for this contest. Though everytime he goes for the pin, Nick Patrick intentionally does a slow count. This is Power’s downfall, as Morrus is able to come back, hit his moonsault, and get the win.

Winner by pinfall: Hugh Morrus

Postmatch, Teddy and Nick Patrick get into a big argument as Morrus celebrates his win.

Match Four: Greg ‘I’m using Hollywood Blonde’s music for no reason’ Valentine vs. Lex Luger

Luger is wearing tape over his torso, selling the chairshot he got from Arn Anderson the week prior.

The veteran Valentine immediately targets the weakened midsection of Lex Luger and is able to gain the upperhand in the early going of this contest. As he controls this match, we cut to a brief shot of Ted Dibiase and Vincent standing in front of an nWo banner, watching this contest. The crowd immediately fires up a strong nWo chant.

Luger tries to come back, but his injured back prevents him from taking advantage. Valentine seizes the opportunity and knocks Luger off his feet. He goes for the pin, using the ropes as leverage, but referee Mark Curtis sees this! Valentine thinks he’s won the match. Luger is up now, gets Valentine in the Torture Rack, and wins!

Winner by submission: Lex Luger

Tony at ringside with Nick Patrick. Tony informs us that Randy Savage is going to be fined for putting his hands on Patrick, but it won’t be the million he was asking for. It’ll instead be $500, and Savage he is going to miss the first five matches of 1997. Only five matches? We then cut to WCW Saturday Night, well nWo Saturday Night where a masked ref is the official for a match with the Outsiders and two jobbers, one of which happens to look like Carl Winslow from Family Matters. Tony claims that it was Nick Patrick. Patrick claims it was Randy Anderson. Hmm…

Main Event: Randy Savage vs. Ric Flair© w/ Woman for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship

When Ric Flair’s music hits, we go to the back where Hogan and Dibiase are talking to the Nasty Boys. It appears that Hogan and Dibiase got the paperwork ready for the Nasty Boys.

We go back, and Flair’s music again hits, but we go to the back a second time, and the nWo are beating up on Ric Flair! Giant is backing up Elizabeth into the arena now. Savage has a chair now, and is confronting the Giant! Miss Elizabeth is now behind Savage…and Hogan comes from nowhere and attacks Savage. Hogan has Elizabeth and Giant is carrying Savage to the ring. Giant is going up the steel stairs and accidentally topples the steps over, dropping Savage on the side of the steps! Damn, that looked painful. Giant kicks the stairs to the side, and just throws Savage into the ring.

Hogan now is beating up on Savage while Giant holds Elizabeth as she watches all of this going on. After spraypainting Savage, and around his body, he grabs a mic and says that he owns Miss Elizabeth in body and soul. Hogan then says that he’s going to destroy the announce booth, this brings out a monster truck painted up in nWo colors that looks prepared to run it over, but the show goes off before it can happen.

Unlike the week before, the nWo only appeared twice (to the crowd’s knowledge) Once was during the first match where they taunted Harlem Heat, the other time was the last ten minutes of the show. It is very obvious at this point the crowd loves the antics of the nWo. That was the biggest (and most noticeable) chant the crowd gave all night, and they were pretty hot all night. Aside from the crowd, there was some pretty decent matches on this Nitro, most notable the main event between Benoit and Rick Steiner. Overall, I’d give this a favorable number. 7.5/10

TV Rating: 3.5

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Harlem Heat got a jobber entrance, which surprised me even more when they actually won. How often does that happen?

2. Obviously, Jeff Jarrett is the newest person to jump ship from WWF to the WCW.

3. The fans were doing a huge nWo chant when Jarrett was interviewed, then started booing him heavily when it turned out he was working for WCW instead.

4. I'm actually shocked that Savage was doing okay after Giant accidentally dropped him like he did. That was a pretty hard fall, and it looked like he took the brunt of that damage on the edge of those steps. How he wasn't cut and bleeding profusely, I don't know. Also, that may be a reason why WWE's steps are separated and have more weight to them >_>.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan

Bischoff welcomes us to the second hour, and tells us that apparently Jeff Jarrett is apart of the New World Order. Is he? We will find out later tonight.

Match Five: Hugh Morrus vs. Jeff Jarrett

Jeff Jarrett, who Bischoff now believes that Jarrett is indeed in the nWo, is getting taking advantage of by the larger Hugh Morrus. At several points it looks as though Morrus is going to win, but Jarrett comes back. Jarrett, who is using a few of Ric Flair’s mannerisms, is able to down the larger Morrus and wins this contest with a figure four leglock.

Winner by submission: Jeff Jarrett

** for a relatively decent contest.

Tony Schiavone is at the entranceway ready to interview Jarrett. Tony states that the commentary team believes he is nWo. Jarrett says that Hogan says he was the biggest thing in the world, that he worked with Verne Gagne in Minneapolis, and Jerry Jarrett in Tennessee. Despite that, he didn’t put any food on Jerry Jarrett’s plate. He said that Sting said it best when he said a few weeks back that Hogan can stick it!

After a quick break, we go to the announce team as they talk about Halloween Havoc. More specifically Luger and Arn Anderson. This eventually leads to…

Match Six: Renegade vs. Arn Anderson w/ Woman

Tenay mentions that Renegade beat Arn Anderson for the TV Championship. That’s when everyone still thought he was the Ultimate Warrior.

This wasn’t a squash, as I figured it would be, but Arn Anderson did control the pace of this contest, that is until Renegade got a hope spot in and actually hit a few moves on Anderson. Of course, he wasn’t able to put Anderson down, and Arn got the win with his DDT.

Winner by pinfall: Arn Anderson

Arn looks to beat up on Renegade some more, but Lex Luger runs out to save Renegade/Beat up Anderson, though Arn bails. This takes us to the break.

Match Seven: ‘Squire’ Dave Taylor w/Jeeves vs. Lex Luger

Luger gets his normal pyro and whatnot, though he could have just stayed in the ring.

We get a split screen promo from Luger (Who recorded it earlier,) where he called out Regal for having his belt, and Arn Anderson, hyping up their match at Halloween Havoc.

Of course, this is a squash, and Luger wins with the torture rack in less than three minutes.

Winner by submission: Lex Luger

SQUASH

Postmatch, Luger is celebrating, when Anderson comes out and destroys Luger with a chair!

Match Eight: Rick Steiner w/Scott Steiner vs. Chris Benoit w/ Debra and Mongo McMichael

Good contest between these two men who are well knowledged in the form of suplexes. Back and forth match going on, before we cut to the back where Hogan and Giant exit the nWo limo. Hogan informs Giant to hold down the area while he has some business to attend to. We then cut back to the match at hand.

Benoit has slowly gained control over the larger Rick Steiner. He is able to get the head gear off of Rick Steiner, then hits him with a diving headbutt. Chris Benoit goes back up to the top, and Rick Steiner catches him and puts him into a nice belly to belly suplex. Both men go for a clothesline, and both men are down. Mongo tries to throw the briefcase to Benoit, but Rick Steiner is able to get it, hits Mongo and Benoit with it, and Rick Steiner gets the win.

Winner by pinfall: Rick Steiner

***½ for a nice TV match.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
October 7th, 1996
Arena/Location: Savannah Civic Center in Savannah, Georgia
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

Tony and Larry talk about Miss Elizabeth and what she’s doing with the New World Order. We get the video of what happened last week between Savage and Elizabeth. Tony informs that Savage will be going against the Nature Boy Ric Flair tonight. He also informs us that Public Enemy lost the WCW World Tag Team titles back to Harlem Heat on WCW Saturday Night. This of course leads us to…

Match One: Public Enemy vs. Harlem Heat w/Sister Sherri and Col. Rob Parker

Harlem Heat in control for most of this contest. During the match, we got a shot of Miss Elizabeth in the back trying to go in Randy Savage’s locker room, though it appears he’s not there. Harlem Heat still in control for several more minutes. During this, the nWo shows up in the crowd. They try to and (apparently) fail to distract Harlem Heat after several minutes of riffs and heckles. However, Public Enemy does get control of this match late after the distraction leaves. Harlem Heat just uses some distraction of their own as Sherri talks up Nick Patrick for a few minutes while they manhandle Johnny Grunge and his bad knee. After a knee drop onto a chair propped up on Grunge’s knee, Heat gets the win.

Winners by pinfall: Harlem Heat

*¾ for a match that saw lots of distractions and whatnots.

We go to the back, where a cameraman is watching as a limo pulls up. Tony assumes it’s Hogan and Giant, but instead, it’s.. Jeff Jarrett! He says he’s got something to say, and we go to a break.

After the break, we get an interview from Nick Patrick that was aired on WCW Saturday Night. He claims that he’s levied a million dollar fine on Randy Savage. He also wanted him suspended, and claims (and implies) that Mean Gene was fired cause of him. Well then.

Match Two: Diamond Dallas Page vs. Jim Powers w/Teddy Long

Referee Nick Patrick referring this match. DDP with the upper hand in the early going. Of course while he’s got the advantage we get a prerecorded video of DDP cutting a promo against Eddie Guerrero Basically says he’s going to beat him up, and soon. Back to the match, and Powers tries to get the quick win on DDP, but fails. Powers tries put a Full Nelson on DDP, but he reverses it into a Diamond Cutter for the win!

Winner by pinfall: Diamond Dallas Page

Teddy Long and Nick Patrick get into it once again. That’s new.

We go to Mike Tenay at the entranceway ready to interview Randy Savage… who actually does come out, with some NASCAR driver. Jim Keller who drives the Slim Jim car or something. They talk about the nWo and Slim Jim car for a bit.. And I nearly dozed off. I wake up long enough to hear Savage tell Hogan he’ll crash and burn like the nWo car. Elizabeth comes out and tries to talk to Savage, but Savage doesn’t want any of it.

Match Three: High Voltage vs. Faces of Fear w/Jimmy Hart

Faces of Fear wipe the floor with the smaller High Voltage. As they do this, Mongo, Benoit, and Debra are out, apparently scouting the FoF. Of course, after one a few minutes, Faces of Fear get the win with a kick by Barbarian.

Winners by pinfall: Faces of Fear

Barely higher than a squash, but still got more than three minutes. *½

Match Four: Mike Wenner vs. Glacier

Two minute squash match, but Glacier pulled off some nice looking moves, and even had some high flying action going on (over the top rope crossbody to Wenner on the floor) Glacier wins with his spinning kick.

Winner by pinfall: Glacier

SQUASH

Glacier does several martial arts moves and whatnot as we kick off hour two.

THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER…. NOT ANYMORE!

We again go to the nWo hotel room. Knobbs and Saggs are stuffing their face while hanging out with Nick Hogan and Bogus Sting. Hogan is talking about the Outsiders delivering a huge surprise, that being Hogan himself, and that WCW thought they couldn’t deliver their own claim that they made last week, that was Kyle Petty. Low and behold, Kyle Petty is there hanging out with the rest of the nWo now. Hogan hypes up his match against Savage at Halloween Havoc, before the promo ends.

THE PRECEDING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER… NOT ANYMORE!

Main Event: Chris Benoit w/ Debra and Mongo McMichael vs. Rick Steiner

Steiner and Benoit work for a few minutes, nice match going on. Steiner is in control and looks like he’s going to win, but Mongo comes in (while Debra distracts Nick Patrick) hits Steiner with the briefcase, and Benoit gets the cheap win.

Winner by pinfall: Chris Benoit

**½ for a decent match.

Tony sends it off and Nitro is ove- wait, what’s this?

THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER…. NOT ANYMORE!

Miss Elizabeth has made her way to the hotel room, where Giant is discussing business with her. She talks it over with Giant and Hogan for a few minutes, then Vincent comes in with a package. They open up the package, but the camera follows Elizabeth as Macho Man appears from nowhere and is now yelling at Elizabeth, wondering why she is doing this.

THE PRECEDING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER… NOT ANYMORE!

Several decent TV matches, and it did help build toward some of the 'lesser' matches at Halloween Havoc. The nWo stuff was pretty much there to show that they wouldn't invade, that they weren't sweating WCW. Smart idea, I guess. 6.5/10

TV Rating: 3.3

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Funny Aneurysm Moment of the show Basically, anything on this show that is no longer ‘funny‘ or means something completely different now than it did years ago. “Hey, Nick! Do you like race cars?” - Scott Hall

2. Every time someone mentions Halloween Havoc, they note that it’s sponsored by Slim Jim, usually by saying Slim Jim’s Halloween Havoc. I understand the product placement of the event, but it sounds like Slim Jim themselves are hosting said event.

3. Apparently, the whole reason they got Kyle Petty is because he beat up someone a few weeks before all this went down. Gotta say, it was a smart move to get Kyle Petty after something like that.

Match Three: Jim Powers w/Teddy Long vs. Eddie Guerrero

We are told that Eddie Guerrero will go against Diamond Dallas Page at Halloween Havoc. That’s nice. Nice Patrick is wearing a neck brace, I guess to sell the angle.

Matt Ghaffari, who won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics games in wrestling, is at Nitro. I bring this up because he was also in the crowd last week. Hmm…

Powers in control for most of this contest, but Eddie Guerrero comes back with a.. questionable win, to say the least when it appears that both men’s shoulder are pinned since Eddie has Powers in a suplex into a bridge pin.

Winner by pinfall?: Eddie Guerrero

After the match, Teddy and Nick Patrick are arguing over his referring skills.

THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER…. NOT ANYMORE!

We again go to the nWo hotel room, where the Nasty Boys come in and join the group. Apparently, they have signed deals with the group now. Room service is being served, as Knobbs and Saggs talk down WCW, and make fun of Eric Bischoff. That’s.. a nice image I won’t describe here.

THE PRECEDING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER… NOT ANYMORE!

After a break, we go to the back with Arn, Woman, and Elizabeth. Arn says that Elizabeth shouldn’t be muddling around with the non-Horsemen like Randy Savage. He then hypes up his match against Lex Luger at Halloween Havoc.

Match Four: Hugh Morrus vs. Brad Armstrong

Morrus destroys Brad Armstrong for several minutes, but unlike their previous match, Hugh Morrus’s moonsault connects and he gets the win.

Winner by pinfall: Hugh Morrus

We go to the back where Arn and Woman are arguing with Miss Elizabeth.

After a break, we go to the announce booth with the announce team. Bischoff however, instead of announcing tonight, is going to find the nWo hotel room and confront them. Tony Schiavone will replace him, I guess.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan

Match Five: Chris Jericho vs. Arn Anderson w/ Woman

Tony Schiavone joins Bobby and Mike Tenay on commentary as this match is underway.

Arn and Jericho have a nice technical based match, though Jericho does throw in a few high spots on Arn, while Arn uses the classic Horsemen moves to keep Jericho at bay. Eventually, Arn catches Jericho in a DDT, and gets the win.

Winner by pinfall: Arn Anderson

**½

Tony welcomes us to hour two, and informs us that Elizabeth is leaving the arena.

Match Six: M. Wallstreet vs. Lex Luger

I guess he’s no longer VK Wallstreet.

Also, it turns out Lex Luger is no longer World Television champion. Lord Steven Regal is TV Champion, and has apparently been overseas the last few weeks.

After several minutes of back and forth competition, Lex Luger wins this one with a torture rack on Wallstreet.

Winner by submission: Lex Luger

Hart speaks for the Faces of Fear, hyping up his match against RnR Express later on tonight.

After the break, Tony is talking about Sting, and how they thought Sting had joined the nWo. Apparently, as a peace offering, the WCW car has been changed to the Sting car.

Match Seven: Faces of Fear w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Rock ‘n Roll Express

Faces of Fear use their size against the veteran tag team, mostly working over Ricky Morton. Gibson gets the hot tag, but that doesn’t deter the Faces of Fear, as Gibson eats a boot and Barbarian gets the win.

Winners by pinfall: Faces of Fear

Public Enemy come out and attack Faces of Fear, though that fails as FoF are able to beat up on the Tag Team Champions.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
September 30th, 1996
Arena/Location: CSU Convocation Center in Cleveland, Ohio
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

Tony and Larry welcome us to Nitro. Tony immediately starts off by talking about nWo Nitro last week. Tony says Bischoff is to make an official statement about what happened, and he’s going to make it now!

The camera cuts over to the normal broadcast booth, as Eric Bischoff sits alone there. He says that the company has roots all the way back to 1905, and that guys like Hogan, Nash, Hall, and Dibiase can’t appreciate people like Lou Thesz, Pat O’Connor, Dusty Rhodes, Terry and Dory Funk. Bischoff says that the nWo is a bunch of thugs, and that WCW will no longer tolerate what they have done. Bischoff says that not only will it never happen again, but his biggest regret was hiring Hulk Hogan. He then throws it back to Tony and Larry.

Match One: El Technico and Juventud Guerrera vs. Public Enemy© for the WCW World Tag Team Championships

El Technico, from what I’ve gathered online, was Billy Kidman. His costume is prominently red (mask is half red/half green), and covers most of his body and head. He sorta looks like the generic red and green guys from the SvR series.

Short contest here. Juventud used his aerial and high risk moves to slow down Rocco Rock, but Public Enemy gained the advantage once Technico joined the fray. PE retains with a scoop slam/ springboard senton combo.

Winners, and STILL WCW World Tag Team Champions: Public Enemy

Postmatch, Technico is put onto a table, while Rocco Rock does another springboard senton on him. PE then goes to the crowd to celebrate.

SQUASH

Malenko cuts a quick promo on Wright before we go to a break.

After the break, Mongo and Benoit (with Debra) are in the back being interviewed by Mike Tenay. They talk about WCW being a team, and them being a team player. Later tonight, Benoit will go against Rick Steiner. That doesn’t sound like a bad match! We then go to another word from the sponsor. The sponsor being..

THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER…. NOT ANYMORE!

We cut to the back where Hogan is sitting with his son, Nick. Hogan says that Nick will be watching every Nitro from now on. They talk about all of WCW finally back from Japan. It’s apparent that the nWo is in a hotel room away from the arena, since Syxx is calling for some hotel service. I guess it was their way of getting airtime without doing anything, or something.

THE PRECEDING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER… NOT ANYMORE!

Match Two: Dean Malenko vs. Alex Wright

Dean Malenko comes out with Rey Mysterio Jr.’s mask. He apparently yanked it off his face during an interview he had with Tony Schiavone, and Tony apparently threw his coat over Rey’s face. Again, I’m very grateful in knowing that WCW respects the lucha libre culture and wouldn’t do anything to demean it by making the ‘break’ from their tradition and values.

Anyways, Dean Malenko in complete control during this contest. Things take a quick turn for the worst when Malenko misses a flying crossbody, Wright pins him, and gets the win?!

Winner by pinfall: Alex Wright

That was surprising. Not a bad match, either. **¼

We get a video package from WCW Saturday Night as Miss Elizabeth watches on as Savage beats up some jobber. Then Nick Patrick.

Mike Tenay is at the entranceway about to interview Randy Savage… but he doesn’t show up.

Before the break, we get a quick interview with Eddie Guerrero, who’s going against Jim Powers next.

Holy crap.. That is one of the most awesome gimmicks ever created. Yeah, it's a ripoff of Mortal Kombat, but people loved it. I mean, you give that gimmick to someone like Tyler Reks today, and he'd be the Undisputed Champion in three months.

Okay, maybe not.

We end the show as the nWo surrounds the announce booth, and they beat up on Bischoff some more.

Wrestling wise, this show had a lot that we wanted, but for an angle, this was very well done. They covered up the fact that most of the bigger stars were not there by having the nWo just dominate the last hour of the show and had them beat up on jobbers. WCW actually handled the absence of all the stars very well, so I give them props for that. Good show. 7.5/10

TV Rating: 3.4, which is a drop from the last two weeks, but they didn’t lose viewers to RAW, since their numbers dropped as well (2.1 to a 2.) Guess there was a hell of a football game on that week.

Other Nitro Notes:

1. After seeing Glacier’s entrance, hype, performance in the ring, theme, and crowd reaction, I have one very simple question: HOW THE F*** DID HE NOT BECOME A MAIN EVENTER?!

2. Quote of the Show: “Hey, man I gotta know something…. Is Andre the Giant really your dad man?” “Don’t go there, man!” - Scott Hall asking The Giant about his parentage.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby Heenan

Match Five: Greg Valentine vs. Randy Savage

This match goes on for several minutes, but every time Valentine tries to throw Savage out of the ring, or do something to him, he’s right back in the ring. Finally, Savage just grabs a chair and starts attacks Valentine, causing a DQ.

Winner by DQ: Greg Valentine

N/R

Shortly after that, Savage looks to throw the ref out of the ring, but the nWo is out now! Hall, Nash, and Syxx are in the ring and beating up on Savage, while Ted Dibiase directs traffic. Hall and Nash both hit their finishers on Savage. Giant (in a suit) is on the mic, and introduces (a rather lengthy introduction, I might add) Hollywood Hogan. Hogan beats up on Savage for a while, even spraying over Savage’s bald spot, before they claim that they are taking over. Hall and Nash make their way to the announce booth. Tenay and Heenan rush off, but they corner Bischoff. Hall, Nash, and Bischoff are (I guess) the announce team now.

Hall and Nash say that the newest member is to debut now, the ‘Head of Security’ for the nWo. Apparently, it’s Vincent! Vincent comes out, to huge Virgil chants, and joins the rest of the nWo at the announce booth. They hold down Bischoff, as we go to a break.

We get an ad for the nWo shirt. It comes in three large sizes: extra large, double X, and Giant sized!

Back to ’nWo’ Nitro, and Hall says that they can take over any sport, including NASCAR. This segues into the announcement of the nWo NASCAR, which is going to be driven by Kyle Petty. Wow. I’m sure if I followed the sport I’d know who that guy is.

Match Six: Jim Powers w/ Teddy Long vs. VK Wallsteet

Er… Well, it would be the next match, if the nWo did just beat up Powers, and Wallstreet ran off. The referee says screw this, and runs off, and now Nick Patrick is out there. So.. I guess instead we’re going to get.

Match Six: Jim Powers w/Teddy Long vs. The Giant

Giant squashes Powers, and gets the win.

Winner by pinfall: The Giant

SQUASH

Out back, Hogan is talking to the Nasty Boys. He talks them up, and eventually gives them his room key. Sounds like Hogan is talking them into defecting to the nWo. They take the key are leave.

Back from a break, and the announce team is now Scott Hall, Eric Bischoff, and Ted Dibiase. Syxx has disappeared.

Match Seven: Jim Duggan vs. Ron Studd

Studd is walking out, and Hogan and Nash stop him in his tracks, to beat him up. Instead, we get..

Match Seven: Jim Duggan vs. Syxx w/Giant

Hall and Nash make their way to the back. I guess they got a tag team match coming up.

Duggan is able to control this contest, using his size to beat up on the smaller Syxx, but after some overt interference from the Giant, Syxx picks up the win.

Winner by pinfall: Syxx

Match Eight: nWo Sting w/Giant vs. Bo Leduc

‘Sting’ puts away the larger Bo Leduc easily.

Winner by pinfall: nWo Sting

SQUASH

Crowd is chanting we want Sting now.

Main Event: High Voltage vs. Amazing French Canadians vs. The Outsiders w/Giant in a nWo Invitational Tag Team match

Well, I guess the Canadians aren’t in this, since they bolt it. Well then. The Outsiders basically destroy High Voltage for several minutes, before Nash jacknifes one of them, and he and Hall put a foot on him for the win.

Winners by pinfall: The Outsiders

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
September 23rd, 1996
Arena/Location: BJCC Coliseum in Birmingham, AL
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

Tony and Larry welcome us to another edition of WCW Nitro. Tony informs us that most of WCW is away in Japan, and that the nWo put an ad in the USA Today hyping up ‘nWo Monday Nitro.’

Match One: Dungeon of Doom (Kevin Sullivan and Konnan) w/Jimmy Hart and Big Bubba vs. Brad Armstrong and Juventud Guerrera

Armstrong and Guerrera get the jobber entrance, which spells doom for them. Also, Mike Tenay joins Tony and Larry.

Konnan works the majority of this contest against the duo. Sullivan seems reluctant to come in. Konnan finally just tags in Sullivan, who gets the win against an already beaten Armstrong.

Winners by pinfall: Dungeon of Doom

Postmatch, Konnan is trying to figure out what was up with that, and Big Bubba blindsides hims! Sullivan and Bubba are destroying Konnan. After a few seconds of double teaming him and kicking his guts out, they help Konnan up, and tell him it was an initiation.

We get a shot of the crowd, and there is all sorts of nWo propaganda being waved around. That’s nice to see.

After the break, we get a replay of last week when the nWo was talking about taking over Nitro tonight. This of course sets up a Randy Savage interview in the back (with Mike Tenay.) Savage cuts one his typical crazy promos against Hollywood Hogan, and how he’s going to defeat him at Halloween Havoc. OH YEAH!!

Match Two: ‘Mean’ Mike Enos vs. Chris Jericho

Mike Enos is able to control most of this contest by using his strength and size advantage over the smaller Jericho. Despite taking a suplex on the steel steps, a powerbomb off the top turnbuckle, and a poorly done boston crab, Jericho was able to come back and get the pin over Enos after he countered a powerslam.

Winner by pinfall: Chris Jericho

**¼. They really put over how tough Chris Jericho was here by taking several painful moves from Enos, and coming back to get the win.

Match Three: Pat ‘I had Goldberg’s theme first’ Tanaka vs. Glacier

Pretty much a squash match. Tanaka countered a leap frog into a powerbomb, but Glacier was back up and got Tanaka with a spinning heel kick for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Glacier

SQUASH
Postmatch, Glacier performs various moves in the ring.

Match Four: Public Enemy vs. Harlem Heat© w/Sister Sherri and Col. Rob Parker for the WCW World Tag Team Championships

Tony informs us that the Tag Team belts will be on the line at Halloween Havoc against the Outsiders.

Harlem Heat controls Public Enemy during this contest, as they are able to keep Grunge in the ring for an extended period of time. After several minutes of them trying (and failing) to put Public Enemy away, Grunge gets the hot tag on Rocco Rock. Rocco Rock is able to hold back Harlem Heat, but they knock him out with a double clothesline.

Booker T up for the Harlem Hangover, but Rock moves out of the way! Rock goes for the three, but the Referee Nick Patrick sees Rock’s foot on the rope, and stops the count. Booker T up and gets Rock in a small package. Patrick starts to count, but the package tilts. He goes for the three again, and we get a pin.. But who won it?

Winner and…

Both Rock and Booker T are celebrating the win. After a few seconds of confusion (and Harlem Heat’s theme playing), Nick Patrick has the belts and Booker T tries to take the belt away.. But Patrick isn’t giving it to him! He hands the belts over to Public Enemy!

NEW WCW World Tag Team Champions: Public Enemy

Public Enemy celebrates in the crowd as we go to break.

^ I know that the nWo was supposed to take over Nitro, and Thunder was going to be WCW's 'main' show, but that fell apart when the ratings for the nWo Nitro came back being less than what they wanted. That is still a full fifteen months from where I am at now. What was the plan in 1996? Was Souled Out supposed to kick off a new TV show, or something?

The show was built around the fact that most of the WCW roster will not be around next week due to them going to Japan. About the only big star that will still be there will be Randy Savage. Well, that and the entire nWo. This week however didn’t feel like a great episode. The matches were below average, and the nWo, while not bad, was focused on slightly too much. 5.5/10

TV rating: 3.7

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Gene Okerlund’s contract with WCW went out around this time, which explains why he wasn’t seen that much at the PPV.

2. Apparently, the week before Sting was in Japan promoting a WCW tour with New Japan. WCW knew this, but for some reason, they thought he was able to ditch Japan and be in America to turn on the group for the nWo? I gotta admit, I can see if there was absolutely no way to get into contact with Sting, but.. That is silly.

3. Glacier’s entire segment was blue. No, not blue comedy, but literally blue. They couldn’t change the light color back to normal?

4. Apparently, part of the agreement of the nWo’s win at WarGames is that they get their own show. Huh.

Match Four: Hugh Morrus vs. Brad Armstrong

Morrus dominates Armstrong during this contest, even hits his signature move No Laughing Matter/Moonsault. He goes for the pin, but Armstrong wins by countering the ‘pin’ into a cradle.

Winner by pinfall: Brad Armstrong

Morrus destroys Brad Armstrong postmatch.

*

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby Heenan

Mike Tenay, before he joins the announce booth, interviews Savage at the entranceway. They talk about Savage’s match at Fall Brawl against The Giant. Savage cuts one of his typical promos against Hogan.

Before we get to our next match, we go to the back where the nWo are celebrating their WarGames win the night before.

Match Five: Randy Savage vs. Scott Norton

Norton able to use his strength and size advantage over the smaller and more agile Savage. Norton controls Savage during the entirety of this match, but Savage snaps and starts using a chair against Norton, causing a DQ.

Winner by DQ: Scott Norton

*¼ from me.

We go to the announce booth, where Tenay, Bischoff, and Heenan talk about Savage’s mental health. Bischoff thinks he’s actually in control and knows what he’s doing.

Match Six: Glacier vs. Big Bubba

Glacier comes out to music that is definitely NOT a Jimmy Hart Version of the Mortal Kombat theme.

Glacier able to dominate the larger Big Bubba during this contest. He uses his martial arts maneuvers to throw off Bubba. Glacier wins this one with a variant a spinning heel kick to the chin of Bubba.

Winner by pinfall: Glacier

For his debut, Glacier got one hell of a response from the crowd. Of course, after twelve f***ing years, he should be! *½

After a break, we go to the announce booth. Bischoff looks like he’s going to talk about the demands of the nWo, but Sting (the real one) makes his way out. He grabs a mic and has his back turned to the camera. He says he’s shocked and upset that Luger, his best friend that, despite what has happened the last twelve months. He says that he’s carried the WCW for years, and that he’s tired of the doubters, and they can stick it. He’s a free agent, and will pop up every so often… I guess this is the start of darkness for Sting.

Match Seven: Chris Jericho and Marcus Bagwell vs. Four Horsemen (Ric Flair and Arn Anderson) w/ Woman

The Kid pushes a button, and more nWo propaganda falls from the ceiling. Guess that makes him the newest member. Seventh by my count. Though Bischoff thinks he’s the sixth. I’m sure they will fix that before they do something drastic and make us think that he’s the syxxth member for life.

Arn and Flair control this match by working over Jericho for the majority of it. Flair is using his dirtest tricks to stay up over Jericho.

We cut to the back where the nWo are standing about, now with their new seventh member Kid. They rub it into WCW that they actually believed Sting turned on them.

Bagwell gets the hot tag, but Flair and Arn (with the help of Woman) get the win here.

Winners by pinfall: Flair and Anderson

**½ stars for this one.

Main Event: Four Horsemen (Mongo and Benoit) w/Debra vs. Lex Luger

Of course, Sting doesn’t come out for Luger. The team of Mongo and Benoit are able control Luger for the majority of the contest, but Luger is coming back as he puts a torture rack on Benoit. Benoit doesn’t submit, however and Arn and Flair are out to beat up on Luger.

Winner by DQ: Lex Luger

*1/2

We end Nitro as the nWo are watching the events going on in the ring in their limo.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
September 16th, 1996
Arena/Location: Asheville Civic Center in Asheville, NC
Hour One Commentators: Larry Zbyszko and Tony Schiavone

Tony and Larry welcome us to this edition of Nitro.. They summarize what happened at WarGames: the fake Sting, real Sting, everything. After that, we cut to footage from before Nitro start of the nWo: Blue Collar stable giving out flyers to everyone. Apparently, they are the same flyers that have been given out the last few weeks.

Match One: Juventud Guerrera vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.© for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Mysterio with the early advantage in this contest. He hits Juventude with a springboard hurricannrana on the outside of the ring before they take a break.

Back from break, Juventud is in control now. He tries to put Rey Mysterio down, but to no avail. He has Mysterio on the top rop, Juventud sets him up for a powerbomb, but Mysterio counters it into a hurricannrana as they are going down and gets the win!

Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Rey Mysterio

Wow. That was a freakishly awesome ending to a pretty decent match. Even though it looked as though Mysterio landed a bit awkwardly. ***

Mike Tenay in the back with Chris Benoit, Mongo and Debra McMichael. Mongo cuts a promo on Luger, saying he needs to get Sting’s head on straight. Benoit says that they will be merciless against Luger and Sting tonight. Guess we got a tag team match later on, then!

We get a video package about Glacier. It’s like the previous one that had been showing, except it has Glacier himself talking about his history, and how he became the Glacier. He’s making his debut on Nitro tonight!

Match Two: Diamond Dallas Page vs. Ice Train w/Teddy Long

I think Ice Train’s theme song is something from a bad porno from the 70s.

A small but vocal DDP chant from the crowd as the bell rings. Train uses his strength advantage over DDP in the early going. DDP tries to take control, but that only angers Ice Train. Train hulks up, and wait a minute. We go to the back, and we see the nWo: Blue Collar group around a merchandise table. One of the members of the group has that yellow police tape, and is taping up the various other members, surrounding the table. As this is all going on, we hear the bell sound, and it appears that DDP grabbed the towel Teddy Long had, threw it in the ring, and the ref (Nick Patrick) called it a win for DDP.

Winner by towel: Diamond Dallas Page

We go back to the merchandise stand, and it appears the nWo members have signs that say “Who wants this crap?”

After a break, we cut to the crowd and former WWF star 1-2-3 Kid is in the crowd. Wait. So they couldn’t call Nash or Hall Diesel or Razor Ramon, yet could call Waltman 1-2-3 Kid? Regardless, he’s there, and no one knows why.

Match Three: Super Calo vs. Konnan w/Jimmy Hart

Mike Tenay joins Tony and Larry on commentary for this match.

Calo is able to control Konnan for most of this contest. Calo however goes for those high risk maneuvers one too many times and he falls flat… on his neck. That was painful looking. Konnan comes back and wins this one with a sitout powerbomb.

Winner by pinfall: Konnan

This thing had a lot in common with an albino Dalmatian - lots of missed spots. Every time Calo went for a big move, he either came up short, or landed awkwardly, or something. Not a good showing from him. ¾*

Mike Tenay now interviewing The Kid. The Kid sounds as though he’s been hitting on Mary Jane. He claims he’s been in Japan, and asks Tenay what happened at WarGames. Tenay tells him the nWo won. Kid acts upset about that turn of events. Gee, I wonder which side he’s on.
