Me and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter are in the wartorn Pokemon Region of Ransei, fighting against... uhh... whoever the antagonist of The Office is, on a quest for One Piece/to become the Pirate King.
... well, that highly depends on whether me and Honest Abe can Link with pokes, really. Unless Comics/mangas don't count as books, and I can change the Office to one that has a clear antagonist, in which case: Me and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter are in the wartorn Pokemon Region of Ransei, attempting to have a vacation while cop instincts made us stand up for the rights of the downtrodden (from Snuff, Discworld) against Howard Epps, the Gravedigger, the Gormogon cult, Jacob Broadsky, and Richard Pelant (Bones) .. hmm... pretty much screwed. -- My Little Phineas and Ferb: Summer is Magic! Gen 1: Red + Blue, and Yellow Gen 2: Gold + Silver, and Crystal Gen 3: Ruby + Sapphire, Fire Red Leaf Green (remake of Red and Blue), and Emerald Gen 4: Diamond + Pearl, HeartGold + SoulSilver (Remake of Gold and Silver), and Platinum Gen 5: Black + White, and Black + White 2 Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum basically remix the original pairing of the generation, and improve them. As for side games...
Pokemon Stadium is great, and I like Pokemon Snap (railway camera shooter). I also like Pokemon Conquest (RTS) and the Pokemon Ranger (uhh... action I guess) series. The Mystery Dungeon ones have a lot of fans, but I personally loathe every last Roguelike games. -- My Little Phineas and Ferb: Summer is Magic! The newer ones improve on the old game mechanics, and they keep shifting the power balance on which pokemon and types are great. So if you start a new one, the older one will most likely feel dated.
Personally, I'd go with either RBY and continue onwards, or get BW and BW 2 (later this month)... Actually, now that I think about it, FR/LG is a good place to start too, since you can transfer your pokes to the next gen. RBY and GSC can't transfer their poke to gen 3 onwards.
