I'm surprised you're so confident at your inability to be lynched, Chris, because at one point or another I'd probably want to lynch you just to keep that damn ego in check. :P

I wouldn't want to lynch one of the better players purely because of the damage they could cause as scum when they could just as easily be one of town's key players. Not unless I was actually adamant they were scum.

In retrospect I suppose I wouldn't either, if only because I'd be confident that scum would just kill Ulti and Sir Chris early if they weren't scum anyway. (And if they really were bulletproof, the lack of kills would tip us off.)

I'd probably put a vote on Chris early in D1 just for grins and giggles, though. Old time's sake.

The one issue with the Stargate role was being 100% night kill immune. I'm cool with giving the SK/third faction a fairly equal chance of winning, but that was dumb. Everything else was fine with it.

Eh, so long as he scans guilty, I'm not sure if being 100% night kill immune is necessarily terrible for an SK. After all, an SK needs to have some chance, no matter how improbable, of winning.

I've played in one Mafia game where the SK actually deliberately aimed for a Modkill because he hated being an SK that much, simply because the SK had absolutely no chance of winning. We didn't like that player, and him killing himself was ****ing stupid, but it was symbolic of how hopeless being an SK was.

...On the flip side, I suppose the one huge positive of keeping someone like Sir Chris alive is the guaranteed knowledge that he's definitely scum if he survives more than one or two nights.

At the risk of inflating Ulti's already massive ego, Ulti's just the kind of person I'd almost always want to lynch.

Not because I'd want to lose him if he was town (I wouldn't, he's probably a great townie) but rather because I'd be quite scared of what he'd be capable of if scum.

...Actually, scratch that: I think that'd be Sir Chris.

Yeah I think Andrew was a bit too infatuated with his seven-act gameplan. Should have extended things to eight or nine acts and broken Act 5 a bit. Hivebent should have been its own act. Even Act 5 Part II could be further broken apart depending how long it goes, probably into "pre-Grimdark" and "Grimdark" halves.

Edit: End the first of the "Act 5 Part II" acts right after Eridan KOs Sollux and kills Feferi / Kanaya, with Karkat's expression. That'd signify the change in tone for the following act.

I'd hope for at least another eight or nine months of solid material, but going well beyond an additional year just seems like overkill. We don't need another Problem Sleuth-sized escapade to wrap things up, and the risk of making the story so damn long that it loses its narrative impact for archival readers would be strong.

If Act 5 doesn't end before September at the latest, I'll probably start to get a little frustrated.

The one on the Wiki? I just read the summary - definitely seems like 'had to be there' material. Maybe we're just in a more cynical era of internetting now, but the concepts of board marriage, roleplaying swordfights and the like - it all seems so surreal, like it might be able to happen on a different forum but not this one. I guess the board really did have a different culture back then!

I prefer my own summary over the Wiki's. The Wiki fails to capture a few of the nuances.

That being said, it was definitely a different culture. For one, the average age at B8 was a lot younger. There was also, for better or for worse, a stronger sense of hierarchy. You know how Ulti has something of a cult now, but it seems less serious and more an old joke to laugh about? Back in those days, really popular users like Shake and Amazing Telephone (and to a smaller but notable extent, even MWIS!) really did have cults of personalities, and it felt like it meant something.

The Board community was simultaneously closer-knit but also obsessive and excessive.

I'd say overall things are far healthier now than they were then, but to be completely honest, a part of me still waxes nostalgic about the old days, because B8 membership was taken seriously then, and the community was...better defined? Simultaneously larger yet more exclusive?

37. Shakespeares: This is a huge bit of B8 history that I missed out on; I stuck around on the board for the first three Character Battles and missed almost the entire offseasons before becoming a regular in 2005. Shake was apparently big into orchestrating drama on a large, board-wide scale, to the point of faking his own death. I don't really 'get' the appeal of these beyond the basic trolling mechanism of laughing at people who fell for it; maybe I just had to be there.

Eh, I was the primary (albeit ironically unintended) victim of the first and best Shakespeare and I gotta say, it was classic stuff.

You should check out the older topic, I believe it was. I summed it up.

About the only character in the main cast I actively disliked in the original FFX was Lulu, and I actually considered her one of the 'better' voice-acted roles.
(NOTE: Almost all of the voice-acting in FFX was horrific by today's standards, but still.)

Auron and Rikku were about the only two characters I felt were both well developed and (comparably) well VAed. (Even then, I understand why Rikku's voice may grate on some, but what can I say, I liked it.)

Tidus and Yuna had fairly poor voice-acting performances (probably not the fault of the actors themselves, actually) but outside of that context, their characterizations were fine. If you could somehow remove the voice acting and play the game 'silent' like earlier FF titles, I bet Tidus and Yuna would have been better received.

Yuna was actually probably better VAed in FFX-2, but the character went through such a terrible retrogression that I couldn't bother to appreciate the comparably minor vocal improvements.

I liked Yuna just fine in FFX.
She wasn't an amazing portrayal of a female character or anything, nothing mindblowing, nothing revolutionary, nothing insightful, but not every character in gaming needs to be a feminist treatise. She didn't actively offend me just by existing. She was prototypical and silly and a bit soft-spoken but she also acted realistically (if not always favorably) in the context of her surroundings and the fantasy world in which she was raised.

By contrast I found myself repeatedly wishing Yuna would die a terrible death in FFX-2, because her mere presence insulted the Yuna I remembered from FFX.

mwis have you ever actually played tomb raider

Nope!
I'm interested in the new game though because it finally looks like it's trying to establish a realistic main character instead of shoving BOOBIES into our faces

Sure, some of the mechanics in Tomb Raider might've actually been all right. Some of the mechanics in Duke Nukem might've worked out great, too. Maybe those games have kickass gameplay or something. But when given the choice, I generally try to avoid overtly supporting brazen misogynistic chauvinism in my videogames.

(Unless it's actually being critiqued, or displayed realistically and with consequences in a piece like LA Noire)

FFX-2 is so bad that, as a man who never really considered himself all that assertive feminist, I still felt horribly offended by its portrayal of women, so much so that I can't imagine how much a poor girl gamer felt while enduring it.

Yeah, I suppose titles like Tomb Raider are technically worse in terms of fanservice content, but the difference is that women knew to steer well clear of Tomb Raider from the beginning, while Square-Enix basically was like "hey, ladies, here are some awesome, multifaceted, well-rounded female characters for you to like and identify with in FFX! Now watch as we brutally massacre any semblance of likable qualities in these women and transform them into living, walking male-gaze stereotypes!"

"FFX-2! With pop music! Massages! Playing dress-up dolls and changing into a variety scantily-clad outfits! Breast comparison scenes!" Yes that could in no way be interpreted as insulting to women.

...They also managed to completely ruin Spira in the course of a two-year gap between FFX and FFX-2 and transform it into something borderline unrecognizable, despite having virtually the same graphics for all locations, which is a fairly impressive feat in and of itself.

And FFX's amazingly bittersweet tragic ending was maimed with some fairy tale 'happily ever after' crap that completely nullified the sacrifices in the first game.

Aside from that, yeah, I suppose FFX-2 was alright.

Then I wouldn't recommend listening to "Eternity ~ Memory of Lightwaves!"

That song is on my iPod.
However, I literally changed its listing as an "FFX-2 track" to just "FFX" and I pretend to this day that it is somewhere on the original FFX's OST.
...This truly reveals the breadth and depth of my personal hatred for FFX-2.

There's actually a tinge of sadness for me every time I hear the Besaid Island theme, as FFX was actually the last major FF title from Square that I really enjoyed.

(Yeah FFXII was okay, and I understand objectively speaking why others liked it, but I always preferred storylines with really memorable and endearing characters over political intrigue and conspiracies and whatnot, which is why I generally preferred RPG titles like Suikoden 2, CT, FFVII and FFX over titles like FFT or FFXII.)
