I do appreciate like the term roguelike it's more a feeling than an exact science and massively subjective so maybe a fairer question is more what makes Stellar Blade NOT a soulslike?

Hmm. I will admit that maybe it is going in that direction. It does seem that a penalty for dying should be there though. But admittedly, even Lies of P is kinder in that regard. There is a penalty, but not as bad.

Hollow knight as a Metroidvania style games are similar to castlevania which existed long before dark souls existed obviously.

Of course. I am only saying that it is possible to be both, especially since they can share some exploration elements. Hollow Knight, while first and foremost a Metroidvania, has the death mechanic of Dark Souls, and I would argue that it has a similar feel as well with its decrepit world.

aside from that lies and P. Having a story, lore and narrative I could actually follow made it far more enjoyable then fromsofts unless you either watch a lore guide or are really high IQ tbh.

While I don't like it better than Elden Ring, Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, I did appreciate this. I also actually cared about the characters.

Okay, so that is also similar to the Star Wars Jedi games, which have all that plus the death penalty. The Jedi games barely count IMO, so this barely would not count IMO. This is admittedly arbitrary and all very in my opinion.

What is interesting is that some of the exploration and shortcut elements that we call Soulslike are admittedly taken from Metroid Prime, which in itself is basically a 3D Metroidvania. And then people argue that a Metroidvania can't be a Soulslike... lol

Tbh, I've never once had trouble with the archers. You just run straight up the buttress and hit the one on the right once to make him fall off the ledge. I don't think I've ever even been hit by them.

Yeah. I knew how to do it. Just sucked

But I barely even died in Blighttown, so it is weird what some find hard and not others.

Admittedly a good question. There are many elements and I think it just needs enough of them to reach that arbitrary point. I personally feel Hollow Knight is right at that threshold, so I can see arguments on both sides.

But what makes Stellar Blade a soulslike? It doesn't even have a penalty for dying. It's just an action RPG more like Nier. Admittedly, I haven't played it yet but nothing I have read suggests it is a Soulslike.

Absolutely.

The gameplay can feel a little dated and thus the game can drag, but the story and atmosphere and the world in general are top notch, particularly if you follow the plot threads and play Control and then Alan Wake 2. I also personally think the sound design is stellar.

Biggest piece of advice if you do play it is to break it up into episodic chunks; the game ends each episode with credits and the next episode will start with "Previously on Alan Wake..." and a TV show style recap so breaking it up into those chunks works really, really well.

I do own Nioh and I did briefly play it a few years back and found it too hard. I am kind of embarrassed about that and need to give it another try. This is before I played most FromSoftware games.

I guess what defines, or at least what interests me in a Soulslike game is the sense of deep immersion into its world. I don't get that from Nioh. Nioh uses the trappings of a Souls game to create an experience much more akin to Devil May Cry or other action games. By contrast something like Lords of the Fallen is much closer to a Souls game for me than Nioh. It's awful, but it's much more evoking the feel that I seek out when my brain tells me its in Souls mood.

I get what you are saying but there are very few games that tick every box. Nioh is on every Soulslike list.

I wouldn't count Blasphemous or Hollow Knight because they're just Metroidvania's with corpse run mechanics, but I did like those two games fwiw. To answer the topic Nioh 2. That and Nioh 1 are the only one's I like besides Fromsoft one's. I have thought about trying Code Vein and Lies of P but I dunno.

I don't know if Hollow Knight or Blasphemous should count either.

Almost every Souls fan thinks Lies of P is great. Get off the fence

Currently it is Hollow Knight for me. If that counts, as it is a Metroidvania with Soulslike elements. Otherwise, Lies of P is my favorite and that definitely counts. About to beat it btw.

I still need to play the Nioh series, Salt and Sanctuary, and Blasphemous (I know that is in the same boat as Hollow Knight).

It completely depends. If there is no point in being blunt and potentially hurtful, then be tactful. But there are times when being truly honest is best for everyone involved. Played the hell out of it and just felt like I played an incomplete game.

I dont think its comparable to the real deal. The worldbuilding falls off unbelievably hard after the first boss and the storyline is just such a bland nothing that wastes every little tasty nugget.

I never play these games for the lore and story anyway. I know lots do, but I only care about gameplay

Just through 3 bosses so far, but I am loving it. And feeling a little guilty about loving it.

Somehow I only gained one pound on my 15 day honeymoon. Not sure how that is possible. I know we averaged over 5 miles walking a day, but I also ate and drank a ton.
