Aren't democrats supposed to be fighting against this sort of thing? I was told they would stand up for us.
I don't remember if any of the linked articles mentioned it, but apparently Biden has been pushing for the re-authorization, and the bill was bipartisan. So no, both parties broadly agree on our lack of rights, though there was serious opposition from both sides.

It's infuriating. FISA is blatantly unconstitutional and in opposition to basic human rights. There has never been, to my knowledge anyway, any information released that indicates this mass surveillance is even effective (and it's kind of hard to believe secret evidence exists because of the constant lying and bad faith arguments). Even if FISA is necessary, none of the reforms civil liberties groups were asking for were particularly onerous, and frankly, they ought to be the bare minimum.

yeah. too many inexplicable things have happened in my life to not think it.

so first, in the home where I grew up, I'd always think there was a man standing in one of the rooms. My parents just told me he was my invisible friend, and left it at that.
A few years later when my brother was around 4-5 years old? Would say the same thing, that there was a man standing in that same room.
I never saw the man move, he'd just stand still in one corner, same with what my brother said. I never told my brother about it, and he was a newborn baby when I was still seeing him (I saw him in that room every day from age 5 thru age 8)
Then, my entire family was at my parents house one christmas...and what does my young cousin see? A "stranger in the room" and he refused to go in.
I moved back to my parents a few years ago, and my cat refuses to go in that room. Any other room in the house? fair game. if a door is closed? he tries to get in and sticks his paws under the door crack, but not with this room.

Turns out the previous owners husband passed away in that room a few years before my parents bought the house, they didn't tell me when I was younger because they didn't want me to freak out.
?
This sort of stuff makes me want to believe, because I've had stuff like that happen, and so have people I know (with multiple people experiencing the same thing).

Was the man's spirit malevolent? How did he die?

The bill includes an expansion of the spying powers, enabling the government to require small businesses and individuals to spy and collect data without a warrant. No protections have been included for American citizens' communications being "accidentally" scooped up. At some point, I've read there were plans to make at least some of this data available to regular police, but I haven't read about that since, so I don't know if it is in here.

The Senate is set to vote on it soon:
https://www.wired.com/story/senate-section-702-ecsr-provision/

Some of the nation's top legal experts on a controversial US spy program argue that the legislation, known as the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act (RISAA), would enhance the US government's spy powers, forcing a variety of new businesses to secretly eavesdrop on Americans' overseas calls, texts, and email messages. Those experts include a handful of attorneys who've had the rare opportunity to appear before the US government's secret surveillance court.

The Section 702 program, authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, was established more than a decade ago to legalize the government's practice of forcing major telecommunications companies to eavesdrop on overseas calls in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. On the one hand, the government claims that the program is designed to exclusively target foreign citizens who are physically located abroad; on the other, the government has fiercely defended its ability to access wiretaps of Americans' emails and phone conversations, often years after the fact and in cases unrelated to the reasons the wiretaps were ordered in the first place.

The 702 program works by compelling the cooperation of US businesses defined by the government as "electronic communications service providers" -- traditionally phone and email providers such as AT&T and Google. Members of the House Intelligence Committee, whose leaders today largely serve as lobbyists for the US intelligence community in Congress, have been working to expand the definition of that term, enabling the government to force new categories of businesses to eavesdrop on the government's behalf.

And some fun fearmongering:
Members of the House Intelligence Community allied with the Biden White House and its spy agencies to defeat the amendment in what multiple House sources referred to as a campaign of fear. An hour before the vote on Friday, Himes openly threatened US lawmakers supporting the warrant requirement, claiming that if it passed, hed ensure those lawmakers face the brunt of the blame in the wake of any future terrorist attacks.
If we turn off the ability of the government to query US person data, the consequences will be known soon, Himes said. And we will audit why what happened happened. And accountability will be visited.

For people saying this is all Republicans, Democrats also oppose it, including Ron Wyden, who is one of the few senators who consistently seems to understand tech issues.

Are you starting with the classic Doctor Who, or with the 2005 reboot? I can't offer any advice on classic Who. For New Who, watch everything. Are there seasons that aren't great? Sure. Will you like some Doctors more than others? Absolutely! But no, it is all worth it. Each episode could be anything, with any level of quality. That's part of the charm.

Except...maybe skip Jodie's last season about the Flux. You'll know it when you see it. Don't skip her last special, though, as it was easily the best thing she did. Every special after that was fire.

If you can't get in to New Who, and you are sure of it, check out the most recent Christmas Special. The next season of Doctor Who coming in May is a sort of reboot and is, apparently, meant as a good jumping in point for new fans.

Your objection to the person himself is not important here. What is important is that these bills are getting harder to pass and are facing the prospect of some reform. The shortening of time before it needs to be authorized again is great. It's unconstitutional and needs reform badly, enough that there is significant bipartisan push back. Not enough to stop it, but it is something. We can only hope the Senate ends up requiring even more reform before passage.

Most of the people in Congress suck. It's important to focus on the issues at hand.

So, first of all, start planning on how you can move out and live on your own. You need an escape plan in case things deteriorate too much, or in case you eventually just can't take the status quo. If you think this isn't fair to your grandmother, think back to how she was before her stroke. Would that person want the person she is now to be abusing you? The answer is probably no, and if it is a yes, your grandmother was never a particularly good person, and we've circled back to "how to plan to escape".

You should try and speak with a mental health professional to work on the stress and maybe to help you plan. When relatives get older and struggle, or when there is a serious flare up of mental illness (that's what this honestly sounds like from my experience), you may reach a breaking point where you can't help any more. That's the point where other relatives or your grandma's partner have to step up. If they can't, then your grandmother may need in-home assistance or to be institutionalized (don't know how that works in the UK).

You cannot give people things you don't have. I firmly believe that people are too individualistic and too selfish in general, but there is definitely a point, and there are definitely circumstances, where it's time to tap out. It doesn't have to be now, but you should start planning for when it is time, especially if you notice a pattern of deterioration.
