Im not familiar with US immigration policy so I really cant say. I assume its controlled to some degree to make sure only the people they deem as beneficial to the US come in? In general I mean. Im sure there are fringe cases.

I dont really know enough to say. Something I can say which is related to that is that the Republicans (I assume you know, but thats the right-wing, more anti-immigration political party in the U.S.) rhetoric here is that immigrants commit crime but looking at the actual numbers immigrants actually commit less crime than the general population.

As far as I can tell, despite the prevalence of anti-immigration sentiment in the U.S., from every metric Ive seen immigration tends to benefit the country.

Im sure a lot of people feel like that. I dont support those people. Its not the only reasons though. Im ok with immigration as long as its controlled. I already laid out two points in this topic with sources to official UK government figures why Im against uncontrolled immigration - at least until issues / backlogs with the current system are fixed. Its not just a question of being for or against immigration to me. The problem is like most things these days its turned into supporting your team situation. Youre either painted a massive racist who hates all foreigners or youre a traitor to your country who wants to see the economy crash and lose the identity of whatever it is you call home. Its so hard to have open and honest debates these days.

Im not familiar enough with the UK to comment on that part but as far as the U.S. is concerned my understanding is that immigrants have really been nothing but a boon to our economy. Its not at all right, but there are plenty of businesses here that take advantage of immigrants as a source of cheap labor. It might be exaggeration, idk, but Ive heard it said without immigrants parts of our economy would actually collapse.

Again, I ask what the difference between an incoming citizen from outside the country is and one who is born here. If anything, people worried about the economy should be more in favor of the former since they tend to contribute to the economy immediately upon arrival, or at least sooner than a newborn can.

Its entirely about raising the population " in the wrong way." So much is already about whites being outnumbered by browns, again, Trump and co would rather resort to mass genocide then let Whites lose power.

So, partially xenophobia but more specifically racism? That adds up, particularly when you consider the words of guys like Trump, with his preference for immigrants from certain countries over others. It just sucks that they are blinded by that instead of considering things more rationally. Their massive failures of ideas are so self-destructive. America benefits from immigration. Racism sucks.

I got guilt tripped into giving my original SNES and games away when I was a kid. My mom said I had my N64 while my cousin had nothing. Same for my Game Gear. On one hand I'm glad to have helped my cousin out, but on the other I parted with some great games. Plus the nostalgia of playing it with my dad who died when I was 12.

Does your cousin still have it?

  • A protg of her long-time ally and mentor Andrs Manuel Lpez Obrador, Sheinbaum is now poised to succeed AMLO when his six-year term as president comes to an end on October 1.
  • Sheinbaum, a former Mexico City mayor who was dubbed the "ice lady" by her political rivals, has pledged to largely continue with AMLO's policies and has received the backing of his ruling Morena party.

The country's electoral institute published a rapid count estimate late Sunday night saying that Sheinbaum had won the presidential election. The estimate has a margin of error of +/-1.5%, the institute said.

Beany

Orange juice makers are considering turning to alternative fruits such as mandarins as wholesale prices have gone bananas amid fears of poor harvests in Brazil.

Prices of orange juice concentrate reached a new high of $4.95 (3.88) a lb on futures markets this week after growers in the main orange producing areas of Brazil said they were expecting the harvest to be 24% down on last year at 232m 40.8kg boxes worse than the 15% fall previously predicted.

Orange trees in Brazil have been suffering from citrus greening, an incurable disease, after extreme heat stress and drought during their key flowering period in the latter part of last year fuelled by the climate crisis.

The predicted poor crop in Brazil, which accounts for 70% of all orange juice exports, marks the third difficult global harvest in a row. As well as problems in Brazil, Florida in the US has been hit by a series of hurricanes and the greening disease, which is spread by sap-sucking insects and turns the fruit bitter before killing the tree.

The series of poor harvests has limited manufacturers ability to ride out the current difficulties by mixing the new crop with frozen juice which normally has a two-year lifespan.

This is a crisis, Kees Cools, the president of the International Fruit and Vegetable Juice Association (IFU) told the Financial Times. Weve never seen anything like it, even during the big freezes and big hurricanes.

The IFU has said it is considering lobbying for a rewrite of UN-level food regulations so that orange juice can contain other citrus fruits, as well as pursuing rule changes at the country level.

She killed someone in a car accident

In 2015, Jenner was driving an SUV, which was towing an ATV, on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. She rear-ended a Lexus, pushing it into oncoming traffic. Kim Howe, the driver of the Lexus, was then hit by a Hummer traveling in the opposite direction. Jenner proceeded forward and hit another vehicle, a Prius, whose driver suffered mild injuries. But Howe was killed on impact.

HONG KONG Online influencers known for their luxurious lifestyles are disappearing from Chinese social media amid a government crackdown on conspicuous displays of wealth.

One of them, Wang Hongquan, had claimed that he owned seven properties in Beijing, the Chinese capital, and that he never left the house in an outfit worth less than 10 million yuan ($1.38 million). Videos he posted online, the veracity of which could not be verified, appeared to show his maids, numerous Herms handbags and expensive sports cars that he had purchased.

On Tuesday, his account on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, was inaccessible to his 4.3 million followers. Searches returned an error message saying it had been blocked due to violations of Douyins community guidelines.

The Douyin accounts of other online influencers who posted similar content, such as Bo Gongzi (Young Wealthy Lord Bai), with 2.9 million followers, and Baoyu Jiajie (Abalone Sister), with 2.3 million followers, were also blocked.

Chinas Cyberspace Administration, the national internet regulator, announced a campaign last month against influencers who create a wealth-flaunting persona, deliberately showcasing a luxurious life built on money, in order to attract followers and traffic.

It is far from the first time Chinese authorities have tried to police the internet, which is heavily censored in China, to combat social trends seen as undesirable. In 2022, officials issued a code of conduct prohibiting livestream anchors from displaying or hyping a large number of luxury goods, jewelry, cash and other assets.China is experiencing an economic slowdown that has hit the middle class especially hard. Young people in China are also struggling in an intensely competitive job market, with some of them choosing to lie flat and withdrawing from society or seeing content creation on social media as the only viable career.

When most people are unhappy with their own lives, they see all this online content thats so disconnected from reality seeing all these people who seem so happy and wealthy, it creates a pretty warped psychology, Lyla Lai, a former beauty influencer who had over a million followers on Douyin, said in a voice message.Lai, who left Douyin amid criticism from other users over her sales tactics and lifestyle, said there were concerns about young people today seeing too much of this stuff and not focusing on their studies anymore, getting caught up in this excessive, greedy materialism.

In the long run, thats definitely not good for development, so this cleanup is really necessary, said Lai, who now lives in Australia.

But at the root of it, we also need to see the economy being able to develop more, so people can have a greater sense of fulfillment and happiness in their lives, rather than just seeking psychological comfort through the internet.
