"Everywhere you look, there are more screenwriters and producers eager to take great stories and make them their own. It does not seem to matter whether the source material was written by Stan Lee, Charles Dickens, Ian Fleming, Roald Dahl, Ursula K. Le Guin, J.R.R. Tolkien, Mark Twain, Raymond Chandler, Jane Austen, or well, anyone.

"No matter how major a writer it is, no matter how great the book, there always seems to be someone on hand who thinks he can do better, eager to take the story and 'improve' on it.

"'The book is the book, the film is the film,' they will tell you, as if they were saying something profound. Then they make the story their own. They never make it better, though. Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, they make it worse."

Martin, who is currently writing The Winds of Winter, did list an adaptation that he felt was worthy of praise, lauding FXs Shogun for being faithful to the source material as it resisted the impulse to make it their own.

TopicAverage age of vehicles on U.S. roads hits 12.5 years, another record
Beany

#1
The average age of passenger cars and light trucks in the United States has risen to a new record of 12.5 years. According to a study presented by S&P Global Mobility, there are more than 284 million vehicles being driven on U.S. roads, and that record average age is up by three months compared to 2022. This is the sixth straight year that the average age has risen, and the continuation of the trend wasn't unexpected.

"We expected the confluence of factors impacting the fleet coming out of 2021 would provide further upward pressure on average vehicle age," said Todd Campau, associate director of aftermarket solutions for S&P Global Mobility. The reasons for the aging vehicle fleet are well known by this point. The Covid pandemic initially impacted new vehiclesales, then shortages were caused by a lack of microprocessor chips for the automotive industry. "But the pressure was amplified in the back half of 2022 as interest rates and inflation began to take their toll," Campau added.

The confirmation came from the Steam support staff earlier this month when Resetera forum user delete12345 asked Steam support if he can put his Steam library in his will. Unfortunately for him, the staffer replied that Steam accounts and games are non-transferable and users cannot provide someone else with access to the account or merge its contents with another account. "I regret to inform you that your Steam account cannot be transferred via a will," he was told.

I give it 5 years max before China actually invades. The level and intensity of their practice invasion drills is just as high as Russia putting their invasion force on the border of Ukraine while telling everyone they had no intention of invading. And while you can argue doing so isn't in China's best economic interest, "the party" is more interested in control and legacy, and the fact that the original Chinese government is still right there being a successful independent nation right in front of them is eventually a reality too harsh for them to tolerate.

archizzy posted...
The first season of the show did follow it fairly well. In fact certain scenes and dialogue were literally page for page out of the book but as the story expanded and more characters and lands were introduced things were changed a lot.

Some things were completely ignored, some were changed, some characters merged into one, ages were changed, all kinds of things drastically changed in some scenarios. Obviously a tv series can never keep up with a book series when it comes to details so the longer the show went on and the more the story advanced the more it became different from the book to me.

Everyone wants to complain about the final season but I thought things were off the rails about season 4 but at that point I just completely ignored everything about the books and the characters and simply just tried to enjoy it as the show it was and for the most part I did.

I really enjoyed some of the character portrayals and seeing them brought to life. My two favorite characters in the books are Tyrion and The Hound and I thought both were portrayed enjoyably on screen. They didn't always do well on the characters but I felt they did well on those two.

D&D clearly were averse to the more fantastical parts of the series, I wish theyd given up control after season 4 to some show runners who might have done justice to the increasingly elaborate and mythical story being told. Euron is a big example of a character butchered by their lack of interest in such things.

I, too, count The Hound and Tyrion among my favorite characters and youre right they were portrayed well, but they also got butchered in the last few seasons. Their arcs in the books have so much more potential and are so much more interesting than what the show ended up doing with them.

e: off-topic but Ill add that House of the Dragon is missing characters like Tyrion that add a little fun/levity in the face of the macabre nature of the story.

I hope in like 30 years nobody remembers his name and his books are just another random unfinished fantasy series sitting next to all the other ones on bookstore shelves. The man doesn't deserve a "legacy" at this point. He deserves to be forgotten.

100% get where youre coming from but honestly hes just too good a writer to be forgotten. Im as sad as anyone that the series will almost certainly go unfinished but even incomplete its in the upper echelon of fantasy series ever created. Much as it pisses me off to be left hanging, what he created is too damn good to be brushed away. The more I dive into the series, the more I see how much of a genius GRR is.

If anything, I foresee it just adding to his legacy as time goes on. A legendary what if.

Also to other comments about the reception to the shows ending, I think the broad strokes would be the same since he apparently gave those to D&D, but lets be real the way things ended up make much more sense in the books and could potentially be set up way better and be much, much more satisfying. Just my opinion but I dont think that factors into his procrastination much. I think the simple answer is that he got mega-rich and famous late in life and naturally got complacent. Dont really blame him at all, and Im happy we got what we got.
