Last topic Kiryu pulled off a victory in a fun, highly debatable match. Today is indie darling Cuphead, star of an infamously hard game. Does Cuphead's skill at taking down all his bosses translate into taking down DK, or will DK smash this porcelain punk to pieces? |

A lovely little water theme (if you couldnt tell from the title). Like many, many water themes in vgm, its evocative of the calm yet turbulent state of being in the water. This song is a bit more haunting than most water themes; theres a feeling of isolation in the chippy notes. I really appreciate its commitment to this spooky aesthetic; I can picture exploring deeper into the water, watching the light from the sun slowly dim. - 183 / 4103 Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 - Heavy Gear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW8Gye2dFXY Takanori Arima @FL81 This was my original writeup: So this song does some cool things. I like the factory noises, which is standard for me. I like the weird time signature. I like the general melody and presentation. buuuuuuut. This would be significantly higher if it werent for the quality of the audio. This isnt a link problem I checked two other links, the song just sounds like this. The mastering is totally off. I dont really know how to describe it other than to say that this song sounds like what things sound after Ive been listening to something really loud: tinny, muffled, but out of alignment with things all over the place aurally. Its a mess. Borderline unlistenable. This might be a me problem maybe its a song I cant use headphones for? but yeah this is too much of a (literal) headache for me. Im sorry Im sure thats not satisfying for you but I have to be honest. This is my writeup after listening on speakers: Speaker audio quality sucks, but it makes this song sounds so much better. I thought this was cool enough to try on speakers, so Im breaking my headphones-only habit for this. Originally this was a literal 2! So yeah. +1 for speakers I guess! |

I can take or leave music box arrangements. This one's pleasant enough. The melody transitions nicely into this format, especially around the 1:00 mark. I actually think this might place even higher than the original - not sure! Recession posted... DID SOMEBODY SAY LIVE BAND?! Sadly this recording sounds like it's being strained through a colander but I'm sure seeing it live was great! |

(1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6QvBIGsi_s Hiroyuki Mizuno UF8 I really like the sounds in this one. The song opens with a tinkly/crystally beat and then transitions into something a bit more synth guitar. The moments when it goes back to the crystally bits are my favorites, probably because they sound a bit like chiptune. Theres also a mysterious feeling as the notes swirl around, taking their time to fade in and out. As with the other versions, this sounds totally distinct its pretty impressive that Mizuno was able to make such unique variants on the same basic song. - 185 / 4212 Resident Evil (2002) - Neptune Tank/Aqua Ring https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQPksaD8p7Y Shusaku Uchiyama, Misao Senbongi, Makoto Tomozawa @Isquen Spooky horror game ambience. Kind of minimalist most of the time except for some strings that pipe in near the end of the loop. I imagine tiptoeing around somewhere dark to this music, afraid of what comes next. I dont know much Resident Evil music, but if you told me this was from a Metroid game, Id have no reason to disbelieve you. Its got a nice alien quality to it, reminiscent of what Ive heard from, say, Metroid Dread. Its also very evocative of coldness, like it plays in some sort of secluded ice area or something. Pretty effective. |

Its got such intensity to it while still generally being catchy enough to hum. This isnt my absolute favorite from the game, but I was still able to recall it before clicking on the link, which says a lot! The big moneymaker here is the ehhhh-WOH" synth effect all throughout, but I also really like the section at the end of the loop for a nice spin on the flavor. Cool pick! - 187 / 4246 Cytus II - The End Years https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrimgGg5pHc Sta bebr117 This starts off awesomebut then it doesnt quite reach those same heights for me. Its still a great song I love the overall production, grandiose and forlorn, and the specific instruments are really delightful. The vocals add a lot to the experience too. You took a risk nominating such a violin-heavy song, but I like those too! Really, theres a lot to like, even if it still doesnt measure up to the intro. |

I enjoy the CrazyBus theme a lot (its a 7) and its neat to see this tongue-in-check arrangement, which is the beginning played over top of what sounds like a concert at a high school auditorium. Big sound check vibes. It makes CrazyBus sound almost normal, which maybe you find that unappealing, but I love creative ways to reinterpret something like that. - 189 / 4307 Madou Monogatari: Fia and the Wondrous Academy - Final Boss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owDu0XexN-Y Mochiri TunnelScene This is a final boss theme alright! Its very tense. Lots of big sounds. Big drums and big synths and a big choir sample. I like how chaotic it is; it keeps moving at breakneck speed. Its not a song I can see myself really returning to much its maybe a little too intense, if that makes sense? but one thing I really love is the drums. Theyre probably the biggest highlight for me. I also like the part around 1:05 where the song gets more subdued; I tend to like when intense/high-energy have little breaks like that, it makes the rest of it feel more impactful. |

Specifically its the kind of jazz I struggle with: freeform and proggy. There isnt much for me to grab hold of with songs like this not to say theyre boring or bad, but I think with jazz I need something more melodic or, the opposite, weirder. This is in the middle and thus doesnt leave much of an impression on me. That piano is cool though. A second listen, however, does this song wonders. Maybe Im enjoying it more now that I know whats coming? Either way, Im way more into it now. This is why everything gets at least two listens! - 191 / 4353 Hylics - Ruins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I74BqCTpOJY Mason Lindroth @Snake5555555555 Whoatrippy This is two (maybe three?) acoustic guitars strumming along, one normal, one distorted. It feels like Im underwater listening to this, maybe even upside down at the same time. Its a chill song though, something that would probably play really nicely in the background at a restaurant, or a casual party. I like dreamy songs like this. I cant really pick out specific moments or anything; the whole flows along so naturally that if youre reading this and youre curious, I would say just listen and be transported. |

Theyre probably the big selling point for me, especially with how prominent they are. I do love a good percussion-based song. Honestly if this was only the drums, Id be fine I dont think the other aspects, like the background strings or the singing, add much to me. Im a percussion junkie give me that hit! - 193 / 4410 Death Stranding - I'll Keep Coming https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnrGMHhnqrw Low Roar @-Chaos-Zero- I dont know what that prominent sound effect throughout is. It sounds sort of like a slot machine or a gun cocking (and really whats the difference between those two things). That sound is enough to keep my interest, at least in the first half; otherwise the song feels pretty plain to me. Songs in this moody style often have to work extra hard to impress me. The second half adds some country flair, which is neat. If anything the slot-gun sound becomes distracting when the song fills up with more instruments. Maybe the mixing is weird on headphones? I guess I like the extra sound more when the song is sparser, so maybe thats a sign that Id prefer if it wasnt there in the second half. I dont know. This song is one of many in the ranking thats improved by a second listen; I got much more into it the second time around, everything came together better for me (though I still stand by my comment about the mixing being a little weird). |

As I say in at least one other writeup (Im doing these out of order so bear with me if the timings a little wonky!), longo songos are a great way for me to get invested. The Main Theme to this Amiga game certainly goes through multiple phases. It starts out slow and ominous, then picks up speed, then segues into something mournful, then turns into a funky tuneit keeps changing, staying with one movement for anywhere from 1.5 to 3 minutes. It has no shortage of musical ideas across its 16:38 runtime. It's very impressive to hear a song like this from 1991. The Commodore 64 and Amiga werent as well-known in the US, so many American gamers are unfamiliar with this complex and captivating music. Like I have nothing against the Super Mario Bros. theme, but in 1985 Rob Hubbard composed the theme to Monty on the Run for the C64, which blows Mario out of the water. But Mario is from the more popular game, so thats the song everyone knows. The same is true for some of these Amiga classics. In 1991 the Super Nintendo was launching worldwide with classic soundtracks like F-Zero and Pilotwings, but meanwhile composers like Chris Hulsbeck and Allister Brimble were coming out with these epics that were just as compelling but that your average person doesnt know. I made a project on Rate Your Music called Sound Test, which offers 1000 vgm in an essential list. (Now its actually more than 1000!) I tried, with help from some folks, to really stretch the scope of what vgm had to offer. Thus, the Amiga stands proudly alongside its contemporaries. (Brimble is represented by Spellbound Dizzy for the ZX Spectrum and Project-X for the Amiga.) Shameless plug: if you want to view the list, you can check it out here: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/pl4/sound-test-1000-essential-video-game-songs-from-pac-man-to-pizza-tower/ Anyway, back to Alien Breed. This is a cool song but as much as I love long vgm, it doesnt really hold my interest all the way through. Its more one of those songs I respect more than enjoy. Its still reasonably high on the list 7/10 is certainly above average but I dont think its a keeper for me. Though I like parts of it a lot, particularly the last 30 seconds. - 195 / 4470 Amplitude (PS4) - Recession https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH4GDbPI_Bo Jeff Allen feat. Noelle Leblanc and Naoko Takamoto Plasman Lots of weird timesig stuff! I dont adore this song but it does some things I really appreciate. I like the overall feel of things; the song sounds busy but not cluttered. It also sounds like a live band recording in a studio (because it probably is?). The intro in particular feels like youre moving down off the highest peak on a roller coaster and you better strap in for the ride. Neat song! |

I dont think this song really does anything super exceptional, but its fun and a little goofy, rather charming. It reminds me of a PS1 platformer with its aggressive digital guitars. Real vibes on this one not much to say, it squeaks into the back end of the 7s from being so disarmingly charming that I cant help but like it. - 197 / 4565 Dungeons of Hinterberg - Magical Monster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWEtNEZWFcU Wobblersound Simoun Love that thunder clapping that keeps the tempo. This would be higher even if its only for that but nothing really happens in the second half? It feels like the song needed to stop thirty seconds prior to the ending. That said, the first half is cool enough that I can overlook it. In addition to the clapping, I also enjoy the way the backing synths swell. Neat song! |

Everything Im familiar with is high energy. And true to form, this picks up around 1:40, with an accordion no less. At 2:40 it goes back to the soft, contemplative side and stays there for the rest of the song. There are dissonant bells at the end, maybe suggesting an uneasy peace? I like this song. I dont think its especially memorable to me like I probably wont remember it in a few minutes but I enjoyed listening to it twice and got something solid out of it each time, and thats enough for a 7. - 199 / 4612 Kula World - Mars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19KjDEtCzlA Twice A Man paulg235 An industrial song, in both a genre sense and a literal sense theres a lot of whirring and drilling going on here. With live instruments I could hear this on some metal/industrial album (I am not great at genres but hopefully you get what I mean). There isnt much melody here, its almost entirely factory vibes, which is fine by me, though I was kind of hoping for more variation throughout the runtime. Still, the industrial noises go a long way! |

And Ive been missing out! Uematsu rocking out with his Playstation organ over here. The Final Battle starts with an extended intro that gives way to something grander in scope, a real opus of a final battle theme. Its great to be swept along there are even people moaning in pain at one point but the thing is, the actual song just isnt as memorable as, say, The Extreme (which I have as a 7). Its still a good time and I imagine it hits harder in game, but I prefer Messenger of Destruction to this (its a 7.5). - 201 / 4685 The DOG Island - Beyond the Sky (English) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-neNAuq5g0s momo feat. Melody Chubak Place Okay, I know I said I liked child vocals, but this ones testing my limits. Its almost a little too cute? Its the same problem I have with the childs version of DREAMS DREAMS from Nights Into Dreams, which Ive never even been able to listen through all the way. Beyond the Sky is almost too much cutesinesswhich is weird, because its not a happy song! Its kind of sad actually, if you listen to the lyrics. For example: I always think of you and I'll try to cross the emerald ocean As long as the stars are guiding me I don't know how much time I need It's a miracle that we could find each other in this world You could interpret this as somebody looking for someone, naturallyor, as is suggested in the comments, as a dog! Which fits in with the game, which is apparently about dogs. So in that sense, the song is a success. Im not really into the vocals but I do think the overall message is strong; that averages out to a 6.5, I guess? Tough one to rate. - That's it for the 6.5s! Lots of glitchy static and horns and chanting samples. Its short due to the lack of loop; I couldve stood to hear it a bit longer. Its certainly a unique piece that evokes dark images: fractured minds, post-apocalyptic wastelands. The somewhat abrasive static is definitely a big selling point, at least for me; it gives the song a lot of personality. Its got great bass, particularly in the middle. It sounds like it wouldnt be out of place in a DDR game with slightly faster tempo, or an Ace Attorney game with slightly slower tempo. This seems to be an all phase mix of sorts the last part, around the 4:30, is kind of unintentionally funny because the audience making the crowd noises sounds so bored and low energy, haha. Burns maple_violet Quirky little indie game song in that way that quirky little indie game songs often are. Charming is another word for it. Its pretty chill, with floaty synths and a methodical drumbeat. It reminds me of Airport CEO meets Lena Raine, even though I think that comparison is mostly nonsense. Matthew S. Burns is one of those composers I think Id enjoy a lot of if I checked them out; I have a song from Eliza (which I think I found from you) at an 8.5. Tasty Plastic Task Force isnt quite at that level, but its still, as I said, charming. - 207 / 4810 Wonderful Everyday - Aboard the Ship Naglfa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol0CsPr0ueU Pixelbee @loweffortmemes I like some of this. I like the shoegaze style thats also present in other SubaHibi songs. I especially like the chorus, when it shifts into a minor key (maybe?) and becomes extra emotive. but man, I cannot get behind this singer. She sounds like she struggles to hit some of the high notes sometimes? Its kind of painful to listen to. I can be very picky about vocals, sadly. But I actually think Id like this even less as an instrumental its these specific vocals that spoil it for me, not vocals overall. That said, the rest of it is pretty enjoyable. After two listens I dont even mind the singer all that much, really. Its a decent song with a wistful vibe that I suspect will linger with me for a while. |

This ones got a catchy melody but I ultimately find myself drawn more to other songs in the soundtrack; last VGMC had Porgy - Abyss which was a keeper, and then I also like the weird Mini & Max themes. I havent been through the entire vast soundtrack though. Back to this specific song, I think the selling point for me is that bass, which is clocking overtime hours. Beyond that, its okay, but I keep thinking Im going to like it more than I do. - 209 / 4865 Atelier Marie, Elie & Anis: Message on the Gentle Breeze - FLASH! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joPVtkXw8Qw Akira Tsuchiya bea Hm, I expected chiptune Atelier to grab my attention more than this does. Its maybe a little too weebly warbly for me. That plus I dont really love the melody all that much. Though there is a funny part in the middle that sounds Battle Against a True Hero, lol. At first I thought it was pretty unexceptional rave music, and I do still kind of think that, but thats a genre I often enjoy. With its pulsing bass, this could belong in any nightclub. I appreciate how repetitive it is, as the best rave music often is. It doesnt really stand out very much compared with other songs of its ilk, but for what it is, it gets the job done. - 211 / 4962 F-Zero Maximum Velocity - Ancient Mesa https://youtu.be/2km0uAV0vpY Masaru Tajima, Mitsuteru Furukawa, Naoto Ishida @Isquen Top 5000 lets go GBA arpeggios The melody in this song isnt really anything to write home about, but the GBA production makes the whole package work. The opening drums remind me of Full Base from Great Sluggers; from there we stick mostly to the same script, culminating in those delightful GBA arps! I dont think Ive ever heard runs like that with this soundchip before. Over three and a half minutes, the song incorporates guitar, strings, tribal vocals, and intricate drumming. Its a bit all over the place, and I struggle to find a consistent identity in the song. Thats not necessarily a bad thing though, as I like being kept on my toes with music. I enjoyed elements of this, particularly the vocals and drumming, and certainly wouldnt mind listening to it again. - 213 / 5029 A Dance of Fire and Ice - Go off the Vapor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_OhSH8awI0 MYUKKE. Plasman According to YouTube commenter clubtonberry, Go off the Vapor is a nice mash up of hardcore, synthwave, future funk and a weeny bit of vaporwave. That mostly tracks. Its a song that shifts freely between disparate musical ideas: the back half sounds like switching radio stations, which is a song trope Im not always fond of, but MYUKKE. pulls it off pretty well. The end product isnt something Im exceptionally enthusiastic about, mind I probably would enjoy this more if it stuck to one or two things, since I feel like a lot of the little bits would be neat if developed more, like the vaporwave stuff at 1:35. But this song has a different vision in mind and it sticks to it. I respect its ambition, even I do get a little exhausted by the end. |

With that marimba and catchy melody, it could pass for a Sonic song. Then it gets into its own territory with this funky bass synth that maybe is a little overpowering at times? Theres a lot going on here and I like most of it, so thats good. Theres also a whistle blown near the middle, which is kind of weird but still manages to work, and some saxophone. The song generally feels like a big party! - 215 / 5189 New Roommania - happy end is coming https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGrjdFvxIJU Serani Poji MaxGalactica Some nicewhat genre is this, lounge funk? Sure, lets go with that. Its got the repetition of some house genres, with three-second beats strung together in a compelling background. Its smooth like all Roommania music, though its not on the level of some of my favorites from the series, like spiral da hi, My Mashu, and the VGMC classic where is smiley? Its serviceable, which by Roommania standards still means mostly good things. |

Mostly a token nostalgia pick... I think. This port of Space Harrier was my first favorite game, so I still have a lot of bias towards SH in general these days. Since I used a track from the arcade version at NFUN's 1000 song ranking, I wanted to go with one of the ports here & after listening to all the soundtracks I could find, this is the track that most grabbed my attention. (IIRC, two other songs were in the running, but I don't recall which ones.) What do you think of the X68000 version posted above? |

Theres a lot going on and I think it might be too much for me? Its one of those songs where every second there are like six separate notes. I did say I liked overwhelming music, and this is certainly an interesting song, but some modulation, a break from all the sound, would help me a lot. As is it sounds kind of messy, but not in a bad way, more like Ive had too much to eat and Im in a food coma. Thats Lost Jungle in a nutshell: a food coma. I like that it feels like Im lost and disoriented, which probably fits the stage where the song plays. Theres also a point midway through, around 3:00, where it becomes truly lovely. - 217 / 5283 Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan - Labyrinth II - Misty Ravine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFlRSVK8GO0 Yuzo Koshiro @Disillusion Oof, sorry for double drop The beginning of this really took my breath away. The instrumentation is utterly gorgeous. The actual melody is a little too repetitive for me though. I kept waiting for something to develop beyond pretty Eastern instruments. I dont need every song to develop necessarily, but with this one, a little variety would have been nice. The song is certainly helped by the arrangement for sure, but beyond that theres not too much grabbing me. |

Oh yeah for proper composer credits: Noted! - 220 / 5330 Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team - Magma Cavern https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaMre9vbkvw Arata Iiyoshi Paratroopa1 I know this song from Blue Rescue Team (the DS version). This is the GBA version, which is just the DS version but with crunchier audio. Thats not inherently a bad thing, but maybe its the link but I have a hard time not getting a bit of a headache from all the crunch. The GBA is a weird soundchip in that part of the appeal for some fans is its crunchy audio. There are soundtracks where thats definitely true for me, but I dont think this song in particular is one of them. That said, Magma Cavern is still a great track, like so much of PMD1! The melody is terrific and the overall arrangement is stellar. The DS version would do much better, but I know the nominator wanted to give a shoutout to the GBA, which is perfectly fine, but for me at least the crunch is too overpowering. Sorry! - 219 / 5321 Space Harrier (SMS) - Battle Field https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyZLi4dBKsQ Hiroshi Kawaguchi Fluttershy_Pony I think the Master System/Game Gear soundchip is pretty underrated. Even among chiptuneheads I dont ever see it getting discussed. But here we have this song, an SMS version of an arcade classic, and itmostly works? Some of the notes are reeeeally high-pitched in kind of an unpleasant way, but the core melody is still there. As arrangements go its not bad, but Id probably rather always listen to the original. |
