The whole thing feels pretty overwrought, to be honest, with your standard ominous choir and symphony going ham. Shimomura briefly trots out her standard violin around 2:40 but it gets swallowed up by everything else. I wouldnt call it bad, but I would call it pretty uninteresting. Ive never heard this song before, but Ive still heard this song before, tons of times. 4:35 does something a little unique with what I assume is a motif from earlier in the soundtrack, so props for that, but then it still relies on the same epic music tropes. Final Fantasy XV is weird I hear mixed things about the game itself, but nobody ever really talks about the soundtrackUNTIL NOW OMGGG - 269 / 6251 The Cat Lady - Sojourn (The Cat Lady) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vYLaBodeHs Tears of Mars @Snake5555555555 I can take or leave this style of, like, mid-2000s moody alternative rock. I like some stuff in the genre (though Im a little hard-pressed for examples so maybe I dont like it as much as I thought?), but this one isnt doing much for me. I dont really hear anything to distinguish it from other, countless songs, except that its a little below average for me (see below). I kept waiting for the singer to start screaming, and he didnt, so thats a positive I guessoh wait but then he does for a little bit oops. The whole thing feels a bit cookie-cutter, and because I dont already have a strong affinity for the style, it doesnt land. Sorry! but! But but but. The one thing I really, really love about Sojourn is the lyrics. Reading over the YouTube comments gave me an appreciation for the theme of depression (and eventual stubborn hope) that permeates the whole thing. Like listen to this: I wanna know the truth I cant go on feeling like I do can you If there's a God I pray he shines a light on all my cloudy days This is written from lived experience of being depressed, or at least somebody very empathetic. So while Im not in love with the song or anything, I really appreciate the profound lyrics. |

Not really my thing. I like the buoyant energy; if I was more into it, I could see it putting a smile on my face. Its an infectiously good time, at least it would be if I vibed more with it. The quiet trumpets are nice. I dont know, there are certainly songs Ive liked less in this ranking, but its hard for me to come up with more to say about it. - ~ 5.5/10 ~ 271 / 6283 Show by Rock!! Fes A Live - Kyu-Kyu-KyunHeart Shaker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqAreNsJEI0 Tota Fujiwara xx521xx This is a good example of a song that doesnt really do anything to move the dial for me. The singing is fine, the backing is fine. I even followed along with the lyrics on the video and theyre fine. I think if I was more drawn to this style of idol singing, maybe Id like it more, but I dont really much of substance to say about it. I like how all the singers have parts, I guess? They all get turns. Thats kind of nice I guess? Its ever so slightly above average because it is a pretty catchy song, all things considered. - We have now reached the above average zone. This feels like stock music. (Not that theres anything inherently wrong with stock music, of course.) Apparently not, since Mobygames lists a composer. I feel like Ive heard some version of this at least once or twice in a Flash game. Nothing against Flash soundtracks either, but this does feel a bitby the numbers? I also get more forest vibes than pirates. But look, its a competently made song that presumably achieves its intended goal its just not really my thing. - 273 / 6311 Akiba's Beat - again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqET2LaTk9Y ClariS @Arti Serviceable enough Japanese pop-rock. The singer took some time to get used to; at first I thought she was a bit too nasal but she grew on me. Apparently there are two singers, but they sound identical to me. This is, like, fine. Im not thrilled by listening to it but I didnt hate it. I like some of the layering the vocals have on top of each other. |

Sheesh, yall are missing easy points! Mega Man II for the Game Boy (not Mega Man 2, thats for the NES) has a hilarious soundtrack of atonal, shrill chiptunes. I like some of what Ive heard, but not this. This is maybe a little too atonal and shrill for my liking. (I know, right?) I like that chuggachuggachugga drum sample, but the rest of it isnt doing much for me, sorry! As the grand musical finale to this series, I feel like this ought to hit harder, but Im sure its beefy in context. The last 30 seconds come to a fascinating, atonal crescendo; I didnt expect that. I think the songs I tend to like from Nier The Ultimate Weapon being the big one maybe arent the ones fans really love? Im not all that into Shadowlord, for example. And Song of the Ancients ~ Fate is another example. Its fine I like how the vocal parts intertwine, and I like the big drums, but Im not into much else. I hate calling things overrated (it and underrated are overused terms that have become meaningless over time), but if I did use that term, then purely from the perspective of its popularity relative to my opinion, this would almost certainly fit the bill. - 279 / 6426 The Rise of the Golden Idol - Auctioneering Pt 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUoVQ-C3JMA Paul Alexander Paratroopa1 This feels like point-and-click adventure game music, but not the kind I especially like. Its moody and introspective, fitting for a hard-boiled detective mulling over a crime scene (or whatever this game is about, I have no idea), but Im not really into it unfortunately. I like the piano intro and the bit near the end with the lengthy fadeout. I guess maybe its all the stuff in the middle Im not into? |

Sometimes I think the music veers a little too into epic blockbuster soundtrack stuff, which Im not always a fan of. This song plunges into that territory. Theres some cool drumming around 2:25 but Im just not feeling the rest of it; its a perfectly fine song, but not one Id naturally gravitate toward. There isnt really much for me to grab onto. The melody isnt too great, which is fine on its own, but the song doesnt offer much else to work with, instead going for a repetitive sequence of notes which is, again, fine on its own, but only when I like those notes. Things pick up a little around 2:10 but its still not enough to salvage the piece for me, Im sad to say. It was a commendable effort! - 283 / 6456 LittleBigPlanet - Volver a Comenzar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcQZqRASiYE Caf Tacvba MaxGalactica This is a fine enough song in terms of the instruments. The guitar and drums and bass sound like a perfectly competent backing band. But man, I cannot get into that singer. Hes got this little punk rock whine to his notes. Also I think he sings mostly in the same style for most of the song, and when its a style I dont really like, thats not good! The song has a breakdown (thats not the best way to put it lol) midway through and totally changes style and I believe singer? I dont love this section either, but I like it more than the faster-paced beginning; the trippy arrangement is cool. I looked up Caf Tacvba. Apparently theyre a Mexican band who incorporate elements of social activism into their music. The frontman, Rubn Albarrn, is known for taking on different personas in concerts and for being an environmental activist. Its a shame I didnt like this song more, since the band members seem really cool! |

Well, I say this not really knowing what Wild Arms 2 brings beyond, like, Battle vs. Lord Blazer and a few other random songs. Im not as into Naruke as several in our community appear to be; I like her work overall but I dont lap up everything she does like I do, say, Nekomata Master or Hideki Naganuma (neither of whom is represented in the ranking!). Overall its fine I guess? It feels pretty insubstantial. - 285 / 6528 Cytus II - Celestial Sounds (KIVA Remix) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh-JK0s9k2Q 3R2 bebr117 Ive got nothing against rhythm game music. Some of my favorite vgm comes from rhythm games. Sometimes though I find a song thats pretty stereotypically rhythm game music and Im likemaybe I need to play the chart to get a lot out of this? This is a song that incorporates loud wubs alongside a midtempo keyboard melody. There are occasional starts and stops that presumably land a bit harder if youre playing the game. I cant tell if this is a long version or not Remix in title is an unclear indicator but it feels too long to me. As Im saying in this ranking, to me songs are only too long if Im not into what theyre doing, and this one really drags its heels for me. 4.5 tends to be the rating I give to songs that are below average but dont do anything too egregiously terrible. Would I like this more without the wubs? I actually think it would be about the same; they dont really register that much when I listen. For me the big turnoff is that unexceptional melody. Ah well, cant win them all! |

When I got to the end I actually said out loud, Thats it? Nothing against short songs though, believe me. This sounds like a standard orchestral blockbuster Hollywood movie theme. I said this in another writeup, but I dont always mind these themes, provided they do something exciting. This one feels very much by the numbers. GUARDIAN happens to be one Im not into. I guess I dont love the overall feel of things. The guitar sounds out of place next to the retraux synths the series is known for, giving the whole thing a bit of a Frankenstein pastiche. I feel like Id enjoy this song more if it were pitched down somewhat. It isnt as bad as the song goes on maybe I just got used to it? I do really like the percussion. It does a lot of cool things I would normally like (child vocals and glitchiness), but I just struggle to really get into it at all, and I have a hard time articulating why. Maybe its the fact that it also flirts with a few musical tropes I tend to dislike, like that trap-style section. I think in this case the things I dislike outweigh the things I do. Its a mixed bag, but even taken individually, nothing here really excites me, unfortunately. - 293 / 6740 No More Heroes - Season of the Samurai https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH_BVGUSt1M Masafumi Takada @tgs2 Ill be mentioning long songs throughout the ranking. Generally I like long songs; I certainly dont have the reaction that many people do of immediate dread based on the runtime. So its with sadness that I say I didnt really like this almost-10-minute-long song. Part of it is I dont like the be the noise or whatever vocal sample; the other part is I wasnt hooked by anything else. It just goes on without much activity and again, I dont mind that a lot of the time, but I need to actually like whats happening, which I didnt. This series tends to produce a huge mixed bag of music for me. Some of it I dislike, a lot of it Im ambivalent on, and theres a handful that I kind of enjoy. This falls into the first category, sadly. |

I like some songs that have a noise component but this is honestly too much for even me; its so abrasive that I could feel tension in my jaw while I was listening. I like other parts though, like the autotuned vocals and the general slow pace, which feels like a long walk (as youre being chased by robot grizzlies). This wasnt very enjoyable to listen to its so harsh, even for me but it was unique among my nominations, so I appreciate it all the same! - 295 / 6780 Final Fantasy XII - Giza Plains https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcLV8b3MWsU Hitoshi Sakimoto maple_violet Sakimoto is one of those composers whos been around so long and has composed such a variety of music that its often a total surprise when I listen to something of his. Unfortunately, sometimes that surprise results in something I dont like, which is what happens with Giza Plains. Its just so brassy! There is an INORDINATE amount of brass, on top of a very loud drumbeat. I find it overwhelming. Some of Sakimotos Final Fantasy output sounds like this, very much like military fanfare music, and honestly I find a lot of it of exhausting, and this song is sadly not an exception. The breaks in the action in between the fanfare sections help the song feel less suffocating, but there are limits to what they can do. I just come away from this feeling like Ive run the worlds least satisfying aural mile not my favorite experience to have with a song! |

KamikazePotato I really love the original Awake from Circle of the Moon, but boy does this arrangement miss the mark for me. Its a conservative arrangement that doesnt change much apart from speeding up the tempo, which is fine. The problem for me is I really dislike the instrument choice. That main sample is very poor imo. It doesnt help that theres virtually no prominent bass or drums, which might be a problem with the mixing. This is yet another example of how chiptunes can be superior to modern arrangements! - 297 / 6840 Touhou 16: Hidden Star in Four Seasons - Swim in a Cherry Blossom Colored Sea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APOSDtYWRc0 ZUN Prince46 Touhou is a very mixed bag for me. The songs I like are songs I really like. The songs I dislike I really dislike. But most of it falls into a big lump in the middle. Its very bell curvey. This song falls into the back end of the curve. I dont like the lead instrument very much, and the melody is uninteresting. I actually feel like the presence of those eternal hellions, the zunpets, might spice things up; as is, Im listening and wondering why this was chosen of all the hundreds of Touhous. Like sure, you like what you like, but this doesnt do anything to distinguish itself from all the other Touhous Ive heard, and on top of that I dont like the way it sounds, so its not ranking too high. |

I cant even put my finger on why. On an objective level, the pieces are there for a compelling listen, but nothing gels for me at all. The combination of glitch and symphonic seems like a slam dunk for me, right? Maybe its the feeling that Ive heard tons and tons of songs before that sound like this, so my auditory processors take minimal interest in it. It also feels a bit insubstantial, like theres nothing there for me to grab onto, no neat aspects or hooks. I apologize for the vagueness of this writeup but I find this song baffling. Why does it exist? Who is it for? Not for me, clearly. - 299 / 6863 Friday Night Funkin': Vs. Rewrite - Trinity Encore https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_AEnOGOxUA Springless @Kecleon352 Theres a lot going on in this song, wow, even without the video accompaniment, which I didnt even watch the first time around. There are references to classic Sonic songs Green Hill Zone and Stardust Speedway feature prominently but the bulk of it is original, FNF content: a music battle between Boyfriend and another character. In this case, its somebody named Rewrite, who I guess is also Sonic and Sonic.exeI didnt do a deep dive on the lore or anything but I think I got the gist of it (or maybe I didnt). Its over eight minutes of a fight between the two that changes in tempo, intensity, and even style, with a spoken word section near the end, which even features a reference to everyones favorite Sonic song, Can You Feel the Sunshine? Theres even an interesting lyric: Your world is a mirror Of yourself And never the other way around and after all of that, I still found itkind of dull? For me, the key to a good FNF mod song is to not rely on the same tricks repeatedly. Trinity Encore makes the crucial mistake of not really changing up too much throughout its run; despite those aforementioned changes, its still largely the same song by the end. If I was more into the main idea to start with, that might not be so bad, but as much as I appreciate some of the bolder artistic choices, at the end of the day I really just wasnt into it. I have nothing against long songs but I dislike coming out from an experience of any kind feeling like my time could have been better spent elsewhere. It's generally better with the video, so if you like this stuff, Id give it a watch with the video, which helps contextualize some of the musical choices and also features some impressive visualization. |

Maybe? I dont know. It was nominated, so I have to imagine the nominator felt like I would enjoy it on some level. But boy did I not enjoy this. I cant put my finger on why exactly, but I find the whole thing unpleasant. It actually reminds me of last years last placer, Breathing Underwater from Rocket League; even though those songs are worlds apart, On the Beach feels indeed like Im breathing underwater. Maybe its all the autotune? Im not big into autotune and its dripping off this singer. Ill say this: it didnt make me uncomfortable or angry or a host of other negative emotions I feel from the music at the bottom of my spreadsheet. I disliked it a lot though! - ~ 3/10 ~ 301 / 6887 Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards - Taking Battle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z8pNk3BFDY Jun Ishikawa, Hirokazu Ando xx521xx I like a lot from this soundtrack, but not this song. It sounds kind of annoying? Like Im being taunted on a playground by mean little schoolchildren. The melody is too high-pitched for me to really enjoy it, and I also dont like the part around 0:35 where it gets all squelchy; usually I like that stuff but this song does it in a way I find irritating. Sorry, but this ones a miss. |
