Democrats are signaling theyll save Speaker Mike Johnson especially if he moves on Ukraine aid
Several House Democrats are signaling they would vote to save House Speaker Mike Johnson from GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greenes effort to oust him if he agreed to put a Ukraine aid package on the House floor for an up or down vote.
If he does the responsible thing which is allowing members of Congress to vote on a bill that will pass and is in our national security interests and then subsequent to that a nonserious actor who does not want to govern brings a motion to vacate, yes, I would motion to table in that circumstance, moderate Virginia Democratic Rep Abigail Spanberger told CNNs Manu Raju.
Other House Democrats signaled they would motion to table kill Greenes resolution if it came to that.
New York Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, who was recently reelected in a special election to fill Santos seat, said he would vote to keep Johnson as speaker because its absurd hes being kicked out for doing the right thing, keeping the government open.
Ohio Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur, one of the few Democrats running in a Trump district, told CNNs Dana Bash she wants to keep her options open and it is a real consideration at this point that perhaps the politically and policy wise to save Johnson.

Here's what's in the $1.2 trillion funding package that advanced from the House to the Senate
From CNN's Tami Luhby
The fate of the of the $1.2 trillion funding package is now in the hands of the Senate after the House advanced the legislation earlier today. The bill has prompted infighting within the House GOP, with Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene filing a surprise motion to oust Speaker Mike Johnson due to the legislation.
The package, which runs more than 1,000 pages, would provide funding for the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, State and the legislative branch. Lawmakers have until midnight to approve the bill to avoid a partial government shutdown.
House Republicans and Democrats have provided summaries of whats in the bill.
The package includes:
  • Nearly $62 billion in total discretionary resources for Homeland Security, which was the most contentious of the appropriation bills that lawmakers were negotiating.
  • $824 billion for defense, an increase of nearly $27 billion from fiscal year 2023.
  • More than $58 billion for state, foreign operations and related programs, a decrease of more than $3 billion from the prior fiscal year.
  • $79 billion for the Department of Education, which is $500 million less than the prior fiscal year. The amount is $22 billion more than House Republicans proposed, but $11 billion less than the administration's budget request.
  • $26 billion for financial services and general government, a decrease of $1 billion, or 4%, from the prior fiscal year.
  • Nearly $14 billion for the Labor Department, which is $145 million below the prior fiscal years level. The amount is nearly $5 billion more than House Republicans proposed.
  • More than $117 billion for HHS. That would be $14 billion more than House Republicans proposed, but $12 billion below Bidens budget request.
  • Nearly $7 billion for the legislative branch, $150 million below the last fiscal years level. It would maintain support for an operating budget for congressional offices and would provide funding to pay interns.

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said there are "quite a few" lawmakers supporting her motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson, though she did not specify exactly how many members are backing her.
She told CNN that she hasnt talked to Johnson yet, but said the speaker is negotiating from weakness and that she doesnt see a scenario where she will back off raising the motion to vacate.
Greene reiterated that she does not have a timeline for when she will bring the motion up, but said she hopes to use the Houses two-week break.
What I'm hoping for is for all of our Republican members to be able to have time to think and reflect over this break, for us to be able to come back together and start the conversation of who is capable and willing to lead this Republican majority," she said.
Greene said that the government funding bill that passed in the House on Friday was a complete departure of everything we stand for, referring to the Republican party.

The bottom line is that this is a complete and utter surrender, said Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., who called himself a hell no on this bill.

The opponents particularly took issue with fellow Republicans voting for the bill and the actions of House GOP leadership. Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., went so far as to say its clear that the Democrats own the speakers gavel.
We told the people we were going to have a smaller government, and we told the people we were going to secure the border, said Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio. Its a sad day.
Its taken lawmakers six months into the current fiscal year to get near the finish line, the process slowed by conservatives who pushed for more policy mandates and steeper spending cuts than a Democratic-led Senate or White House would consider. The impasse required several short-term, stopgap spending bills to keep agencies funded as negotiations continued.
It is ironic that the group that has made compromise the most difficult over the last year continues to oppose compromise, said Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., during floor debate on the bill. Legislative action is about compromise.
The first package of full-year spending bills, which funded the departments of Veterans Affairs, Agriculture and the Interior, among others, cleared Congress two weeks ago with just hours to spare before funding expired for those agencies. Now, lawmakers are considering the second package under a similar scenario.
The 1,012-page bill also funds the departments of Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, Labor and others.
Nondefense spending will be relatively flat compared with the prior year, though some, such as the Environmental Protection Agency, are taking a hit, and many agencies will not see their budgets keep up with inflation.
When combining the two packages, discretionary spending for the budget year will come to about $1.66 trillion. That does not include programs such as Social Security and Medicare, or financing the countrys rising debt.

Georgia is adding their immigration law this month too.

https://www.npr.org/2024/03/19/1239323195/immigration-crackdown-georgia-legislature-laken-riley-border

Georgia Republican lawmakers are advancing a bill that would require local and state police to identify, arrest and detain undocumented immigrants responsibilities normally reserved for federal immigration enforcement.
The proposal gained momentum after a Venezuelan migrant was arrested in the killing of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student in Athens, Georgia. Immigrant rights advocates in the state say the bill demonizes immigrants, pointing to research that shows undocumented immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than others.
But Republican state Rep. Jesse Petrea, the bill's sponsor, said it will bolster public safety.
"We have the greatest border crisis in our nation's history," he said. "In Georgia, the people of this state, the people we represent, are expecting us to do something. And I think this is a good way to do just that."
The proposal is similar to Senate Bill 4, the Texas measure that empowers state and local police to arrest people who illegally cross the southern border and allows local judges to deport migrants out of the country. The U.S. Supreme Court recently rejected an emergency request by the Biden administration to block the Texas law.
Georgia's bill would require law enforcement to check immigration status during encounters and work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to hold those arrested. It would also require jails to check with immigration officials to determine if people in their custody are in the country illegally.
Opponents argue the bill will lead to racial profiling.
"This bill will force human beings to live in fear and burden local governments and law enforcement officers by expanding their responsibilities, without a penny of state funding," said Democratic state Rep. Pedro Marin, the legislature's longest-serving Latino elected official.
Georgia sheriffs say they already comply with federal requests for citizenship information, and have expressed worries that the proposal would overburden their departments.
"It's not about making Georgians safer," said Jerry Gonzalez, the CEO of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials. "The issue is about using an opportunistic situation, to target wholesale, an immigrant and Latino community and that's really divisive and it's dangerous politics they're playing."
Immigrant rights advocates in Georgia say the bill is motivated by the upcoming presidential election, and multiple advocacy groups have held events condemning the legislation.
Ben Williams, president of the Cobb County chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, compared the bill to Jim Crow policies.
"Bashing immigrants now, bashing descendants of slaves at an earlier time, is a tried and unfortunately true approach to keeping people divided," he said.
But Republicans in Georgia insist they're addressing immigration in a meaningful way.
"Fixing policy in the face of unspeakable tragedy is not politics," said Republican state Rep. Houston Gaines, whose district includes Athens, where Laken Riley was killed. "It's doing the right thing to ensure something like this never occurs again."
The bill has passed out of the Georgia House of Representatives but still needs to clear the state Senate before it can head to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp's desk.

Activists slam Biden administration ahead of key meeting with Arab and Muslim leaders
A large collection of activist groups in the greater Chicago area sent a harshly critical letter to the White House ahead of a meeting between officials in US President Joe Biden's administration and Arab and Muslim leaders.
There is no point in more meetings. The White House already knows the position of the aforementioned groups and our allies across the nation, the letter states.
The signees demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and said a meeting "would only act to whitewash months of White House inaction followed by meek handouts."
"We are interested in serious action," the activists said.
A few dozen coalitions and community leaders signed the letter. Tarek Khalil, an attorney and board member with American Muslims for Palestine-Chicago, was among those who spearheaded the letter. Khalil was not personally invited to the White House meeting, but suggested a good portion of the signatories were.
It was not immediately clear who would be represented at the meeting, and the White House declined to provide a list of attendees.
You cannot play firefighter and arsonist at the same time, Khalil said of the US policy on the conflict.
A White House official did not directly address the letter when asked for comment. The White House has declined to provide a list of attendees at the meeting.

Netanyahu's Likud party slams Schumer for not respecting the Israeli government
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is "expected to respect Israel's elected government and not undermine it," Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party said Thursday after the US senator criticized the Israeli prime minister and his government, calling for new elections.
"Israel is not a banana republic but an independent and proud democracy that elected Prime Minister Netanyahu," reads the Likud statement. "Contrary to Schumer's words, the Israeli public supports a total victory over Hamas" and "opposes the return of the Palestinian Authority to Gaza," it said.
Remember: In its annual report released Monday, the US intelligence community assessed that the distrust in Netanyahus leadership has deepened and broadened across the public from its already high levels before the war, and we expect large protests demanding his resignation and new elections.
Meanwhile, Israeli war cabinet minister and the head of the National Unity party Benny Gantz also criticized the remarks.
Schumer "is a friend of Israel, who helps it a lot, also in these days, but he was wrong in his statement," Gantz said. "Israel is a strong democracy, and only its citizens will determine its leadership and future. Any external intervention in the matter is not right and unacceptable."
Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in the US, said Thursday, As a lifelong supporter of Israel, it has become clear to me: The Netanyahu coalition no longer fits the needs of Israel after October 7."
State Department spokesperson Matt Miller said he does not believe that the remarks will make it more difficult for the US to deal with Netanyahu, pointing out that the Israelis know that the comments did not come from the executive branch.

Far-right Israel minister says US sanctions on West Bank settlers are proof it doesn't know who the enemy is
From CNN's Lauren Iszo and Radina Gigova
Israel's far-right Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir said that the US Treasury Department's decision to impose sanctions on Israeli settlers in the West Bank is "further proof that the US government does not understand who is the enemy and who is a friend."
He claimed Tuesday that the settlers "build, settle and bring security to the country" and "deserve a salute not a knife in the back."
Remember: The US announced new sanctions on three Israeli settlers and two farms in the West Bank on Thursday, as the administration targets threats to peace and security in the area.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/14/business/steven-mnuchin-tiktok/index.html

Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday hes assembling a team of investors to make a bid to buy TikTok.
This comes a day after the House passed a measure to ban the Chinese-owned social media giant or force a sale to a US-operated owner.
Its a great business and Im going to put together a group to buy TikTok, Mnuchin said in an interview on CNBC Thursday morning. Even though TikTok is likely unprofitable, its worth a lot of money, he added.

Mnuchin said he would give existing US investors the option to roll over their stakes in TikTok but stressed that no entity would have more than 10% control. But he declined to name any individuals on the team hes putting together. Theres no way that the Chinese would ever let a US company own something like this in China, he said. From his time in the administration, he said hes seen evidence that having TikTok on your phone gives it the ability to collect an awful lot of data.

But ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, may never be allowed to be sold to any company outside of China because of measures the government began putting into place in 2020. The Chinese government deems TikTok a sensitive technology and officials have said theyd oppose any forced sale that would involve exporting it into the hands of a foreign owner. Mnuchin and TikTok didnt immediately respond to CNNs requests for comment.
Dan Ives, senior equity analyst at Wedbush Securities, told CNN that ByteDance and China will never sell TikTok with the source code the special sauce that makes the app so successful and valuable.

Without the source code, this would be like buying an F1 car without the engine. It would be illogical, Ives said. Mnuchin, though, said hes looking to find a solution where the Chinese government will allow TikTok to be sold without a technology transfer. Mnuchin, who now leads Liberty Strategic Capital, a private equity firm, was an early advocate for forcing a sale of TikTok to a US company. But he faced opposition from other members of former President Donald Trumps cabinet when the sale was proposed in 2020. Trump supported a ban at the time. Hes since changed his stance, arguing that it would benefit Facebook.
Facebook has been very bad for our country, he said in a separate interview on CNBC earlier in the week. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, didnt immediately respond to CNN.

I believe he would support a sale, Mnuchin said Thursday, referring to Trump. Ill call him up later and ask him. He added that hes been in touch with the former president in recent weeks regarding TikTok but has not discussed his nascent effort to acquire it. Thursdays TikTok news comes just one week after Mnuchin led a $1 billion lifeline rescue of embattled regional lender New York Community Bank. The TikTok bill the House passed is now heading to the Senate, where it faces a much larger uphill battle in getting approved. President Joe Biden said he would sign the bill into law if the Senate passes it. Even if that happens, any kind of TikTok ban would likely be fought in courts. Already Montana was prevented from moving forward with a law to effectively ban the app after a federal judge blocked it last year.

Ives, the tech analyst, said he sees a 25% chance that the TikTok legislation ultimately becomes law, forcing a sale of the company. He said countless parties are undoubtedly considering making an offer to buy TikTok should it go up for sale. Its sharks. They see blood in the water, he said. However, the more likely buyer, according to Ives, would be a tech giant like Microsoft or Oracle, which already has a relationship with TikTok, and not a financial player like Mnuchin.

This what GOP really wants a MAGA to buy tiktok
