Those particular leaders don't modernize, because they're more interested in holding power among their own constituents rather than trying to gain widespread support. Same reason why many evangelical and conservative leaders do the same thing.

That sounds like a big deal until you realize the median hourly wage in America is about $17 and some change, which is like $700 a week assuming a 40-hour work week. The $400 for the American groceries is more than half our median weekly pay

Median hourly wage among salaried wage workers is different from median income. People who get paid by the hour tend to be low paying jobs vs overall cross-section of workers. Median salary income across all individuals in the US is more around 65 to 80k.

Carlson filmed himself and his crew shopping for groceries for the week at a Russian grocery store. Carlson and his crew estimated that the amount of food they purchased for the week would run about $400 in an American grocery store, but the bill was around 9,400 Russian Rubles, about $100 American.

"I went from amused to legitimately angry," Carlson says in the clip, feigning outrage that groceries would be so much cheaper in Russia. "If you take people's standard of living and you tank it through filth and crime and inflation, and they literally can't buy the groceries they want...you're wrecking people's lives and their country, and that's what our leaders have done to us."

The problem with Carlson's view of life in Russia is that he doesn't take into account how much less Russians get paid on average. It's easy to say quality of life in Russia is higher if you assume Russian salaries are equal with those in the U.S., but they aren't.
According to the most recent economic data, the average monthly wage in Russia is 73,383 Rubles, the equivalent of roughly $800 a month in the United States. That comes out to 18,345 Rubles per week for the average Russian, around $200 American. This means that Carlson's grocery bill of roughly 9,400 Rubles represented more than 50% of a Russian weekly salary.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, Russia is experiencing a massive food supply crisis. Food inflation is one of the most frequently referenced quality of life issues for everyday Russians. In a survey of 5,000 people aged 20-55, TASS found that 60.4% of Russian citizens spend about half of their monthly income for food, 16% spend almost all their earnings on food, and 14.8% about a third of their income. Only 8.8% spend no more than 20% on food.

I hate it when idiotic Americans try to make direct comparisons to prices, without taking into account standard of living, and America's dollar value being propped up as the international reserve currency.

The noodles are a bit too hard so it was unpleasant to eat, but I guess it depends on the brand.

I bet it's because you ate the ones made in the US. Instant noodles are dried in the US, but flash-fried in Asia. If you eat Western-made instant noodles, you need to add the seasoning for flavor.

I never liked it myself, but it's perfect acceptable.

Remember, in Asia countries, instant ramen are fully cooked noodles that is then flash-fried. That is why you see it being eaten dried like a snack in Asian countries.

In Western countries, the instant noodles are cooked, then flash air-dried, so they don't taste like potato chips like in Asian countries, but it can still be tasty when you add the seasoning to it.

That's a big one. People forget that male actors rely a lot on their physicality, probably even more than women. 18 hours on set, all day, all week. It's a young man's game. The older you get, the less likely a movie director is willing to pay $20 million for a 60+ year old actor who needs his beauty rest.

This is the reason why Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt still get huge movie roles at the age of 61, but Denzel Washington and Liam Neeson are stuck in mid-level and B-level movies. There are exceptions of course.

Sam L Jackson, Morgan Freeman's success is based more on their voice and charisma than their physicality.

c) Russell Crowe developed a bad reputation as a hot-head during the mid to late 2000s. So he did not develop good personal relationships with many studio heads and big-time directors. DiCaprio has Scorcese. Sam L Jackson has Tarantino. Michael Caine has Nolan. When you've got your own personal relationships with the top directors in the industry, you'll never have to do shit movies for the bills.

d) If you don't build personal relationships with the top directors and producers in Hollywood, then build your own production company. Russell Crowe was TOO SLOW in making his own production company. Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler -- these are examples of actors who have the luxury of doing the movies that they want, because they took a risk and built their own production companies. Russell Crowe did NOT take advantage of his fame and success until it was way too late. It was only until 2021 that he started his own production company.

I saw it all of the time. Often times for wool / nylon/ etc. type clothes. The 'small-ish' hole you are referring to seems to me is just a pocket with only a few threads to keep it closed temporarily.

Once you're past college and in the "real world", how do you meet new people?

a) Try to stay connected with your old college and high school buddies. This allows you to meet new friends through them. You also get a natural icebreaker by reminiscing about your school days. People always complained about why school exists. IMO, this is the #1 reason why society has schools.

b) Make friends with people at work.
c) Make friends with people that you share hobbies with.
d) If you live in a city, or major suburb, perhaps there are neighborhood events that you can attend.

The wife's family in this case would be my actual family. And I don't think it's about following tradition in her case. It's more so that media has been telling her her entire life that particular day should be some fairy tale thing where the bride is the most important person in existence and everything should be perfect to her desires.

Regardless, it's not just media, though. It used to be that nice weddings were something that every middle-class family could afford, at least borrow and recover from. It's just not the case anymore in this new economy, and that social attitude is just now starting to catch up with this new reality.

That typically doesn't work logistically. Just the parking alone would be a nightmare. And most family houses only have enough utensils and place settings for 6-12 people. There's a reason why most people rent out a venue for parties of 15 or more.

Wedding pageantry was traditionally meant to show appreciation from the wife's family that the husband was now taking the financial burden of caring for a woman out of their hands.

As we progressed to the 1900s, it was then meant as a signal to show that both families are in such good financial positions, that they can afford to have an expensive party.

Nowadays, being middle-class is not considered well-off. You can't afford a decent house in a decent location without being way above middle-class. So here we are...
