Most deforestation that people complain about is slash and burn deforestation, not just tree farms. Where they're going into oldgrowth forests, cutting it down and burning everything. It's irreplaceable forests that people are concerned about.

I mean I looked up a few energy positive conversions with Co2 in a few minutes but shrug, ain't gonna do enough research to argue that it's possible.

wolfy42 posted...
As far as making another layer this was doing multiple times (In CA where I lived at least), although one of them collapsed due to an earthquake if I remember right. You can actually build a second layer while the primary layer is still being used, you just can't use the second layer till it's finished (but you could put Solar panels on the second layer until it's done to get something out of it).

This is a bit of a squinting moment, I can see things going very badly very quickly, for the logistics reasons I just mentioned.

wolfy42 posted...
Again you could have the most top level be for EV only cars, or just keep themost top level setup just for solar panels (that along with ...the possible fictional Co2 conversion to electricity...would provide power for EV cars as well).

I'm sure an EV-only road over everyone else will go over well, and easy to implement.

just make a second layer to drive on (one the freeway extension is done),

Except the foundation for the road is already set for how much weight the road is, plus cars/trucks on it. So if you want to add a second road, plus some overhang, plus ventilation to move the co2, you're going to have to remake the entire road. Plus if the ventilation system has any sort of leaks, you didn't solve any problems (and who's going to go around checking that system?).

wolfy42 posted...

I looked up a few methods of converting Co2 into electricity

There is no energy positive ways of turning CO2 into electricity. If it already existed, it would have been used already. All carbon capture programs are power negative. They cost energy to use.

wolfy42 posted...
The whole multi-layered freeway though is also mainly to remove/reduce congestion, and is just one of the methods proposed for doing so. Converting just to EV vehicles will not help the problem, which is constantly getting worse. In LA for instance, it was so bad when I visited last that it literally took over an hour to travel 10 miles, and that was every single day I was there. Congestion is crazy in some places and multi-layered freeways could help with that fairly quickly. The whole Co2 capture setup would just be a way to actually use the emissions for something positive (especially if you ALSO cover the top with solar panels, or alternatively have the top layer of the freeway for EV vehicles only which also have solar panels on them (heh).

  1. This is unrelated to what you're talking about before.
  2. If you're driving on the top side, you also need another thing on top of it to capture that co2, which means you need another thing on top of that, and then another thing on that....
  3. Solar panel on EVs are typically not as useful as you would imagine, people like to park their cars in the shade.

They are planning on making all cars in CA EV I think by some date in the future, but also having a massive problem with the power grid with even the EV cars they have now

It will actually help reduce that, because people charge their vehicles at night. And increasing power demand at night can help reduce the power demand swing during the entire day, so power factories can reduce on/off cycling. At least during the summer when people blast their AC during the day.

wolfy42 posted...
As far as tunnels etc, you would only do it for main freeways

So you're suggesting covering all freeways? Or just highly trafficked ones? That's a whole, whole lot of increased maintenance requirements for a recapture program. Cities struggle to even keep the roads pothole free, imagine if they had to handle thousands of miles of buildings, that if they fuck up, the road's completely unusable on both directions.

Plus, remember that ICE's use oxygen for combustion. Tunnels have a very strong ventilation system to help bring fresh air in, and suck out all of the carbon monoxide and increased CO2. Are we going to install ventilation systems too? Or will recapture plants magically get CO2 to them?

What if you just had the cars mainly drive under covered freeways, in tunnels etc, so that the co2 emissions would naturally raise up, but instead of entering out atmosphere, you have collectors that grab it in gas form, store it, and allow it to be used afterwards?

How many tunnels do you think we have that this would solve any percent of driving?

I still maintain, as I always have, that metric is better for science and engineering but Imperial/standard is often better for everyday life.

Engineering uses whatever units are convenient for the situation. We also don't tend to move units around, so it doesn't really matter if someone bounces between Nm of torque on a 1/2in lug nut, because that's just what the tool uses, and that's how design chose the size of the lug nut.

Not for distances or most volume measures in cooking, and those are the only instances where laypeople actually have to work with measurements systems. Metric is better, generally speaking, but for everyday use it doesn't actually matter all that much (which is the main reason the US hasn't switched over).

5: People in the USA drive on the wrong side of the road

Driving side is largely arbitrary. The only important thing is that everybody on a given road chooses the same side.

Both of those are fairly arbitrary, as it turns out.

Broadly, when a photon is absorbed by a conductive surface, it triggers the release of an electron based on the energy of that photon. If you put a colour filter over the surface, that means the electron will only be released if a photon of the right wavelength to pass through the filter hits it. In a digital camera, you've got a large number of tiny conductive surfaces with an assortment of filters on them that means each one corresponds to one of red, green, or blue. Each of those sensors produces an electrical signal when light of the correct colour hits them, which all gets wired up to a computer that processes those electrical signals into an image.

It's functionally very similar to how the eye works: The retina is covered in photosensitive cells that each respond to photons of a different colour. When a photon hits one, it triggers a chemical reaction that sends an impulse to the brain via the optic nerve. The brain takes all the incoming signals and interprets them as an image.

None of this negates cursive writing as being beneficial. In fact, an argument could be made we should write in cursive instead of manuscript since it appears to be more beneficial. Sure lots of things develop fine motor skills. My 4 year old goes to Montessori and they teach cursive because of the prior pros mentioned

I believe cursive is definitely better for motor skills as a child than building blocks or playdough. It takes a lot more skill to write in cursive for a small child than it does to make things with play dough or play with building blocks lol. It takes way more precision

Except unless you declare that all computer systems be required to primarily be cursive, the point is moot and you're training kids to write on chalk tablets without getting dust on themselves.
Train people for how the world is, rather than what you want.
