I love how people assume buying a new car is the only unnecessary expense. What about kids, grad schools, paying for some mortgage on a house above your means or buying a house without using your head, pets, drinking, vacations abroad, student loans on a liberal arts degree at a private college, smart phones, starbucks, lottery tickets, video games, a gold diggin gf or wife, gas on long commutes, eating out, cable, sports events, cigarettes. weddings, and etc.

For yall hating on new cars yall can seriously take the nearest cab to haters alley because yall are so asshurt lmao.

Some of these are pretty stupid comparisons.

Some? That's generous

I'm not going to say every comparison there is spot on but fact of the matter is that a lot of those things are wholly unnecessary yet many of the same people don't mind spending money on them every month, even to the amount of costing as much as a car payment, even when there are cheaper alternatives, including just not buying them. I'd say the biggest waste of money on a month to month basis would be drugs and alcohol, yet I know people that spend hundreds a month on them.

What are you even talking about? I'm saying if you want a performance vehicle, then get a performance vehicle. If all you want is a grocery getting econobox, then get one. Cars of the kinds come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors, so I don't know how you're misinterpreting what I said. If I was in the market for a pony car, it had better have a V8 in it. If all I care about is maximizing MPGs, then I'm in the wrong planet by considering RWD sport coupes. I'm just asking for consistency.

I'm not getting how you're not getting what I said. This is simple

Person likes look of car, lets say Camaro. Person cares little to ntohing about performance beyond being able to get from point A to point B, therefore they don't care to get a V8, etc. They understand that Camaro doesn't have the best MPG, no matter what version, therefore they get the version that gives them the best MPG, etc. They're willing to bite the bullet on that because they want the car style. This isn't uncommon

Maybe they just like the look of the car and aren't worried about performance?

Interesting. You want the performance "look", but you don't want the actual performance.

For such people, I say get a Prius. You'll get neither the performance nor the look - at least you'd be consistent.

Uh yeah, not everyone is a car person. Hell, most people really car people, they just want to get from A to B in something that they like. There's a reason why cars have lots of different body styles. By that logic all cars should just look the same.

Also, for most people, will they ever really get to experience all that performance? Driving day to day in bumper to bumper traffic? The answer is rarely to flat out no.

Probably because it's an unessecary expense. There are plenty of cheaper, older cars that are perfectly driveable, but people buy new cars to show off or something.

Mernardi posted...
Because it's a stupid investment. You lose a lot of value once you drive it off the lot.

A used car has a lot better value and it doesn't lose thousands of dollars when you take it off the lot.

Fact of the matter is that most people make stupid investments, in all sorts of stuff. How many people on this very forum buy 100% useless $1000 anime figurines and other useless crap, but then turn around and say "omg don't buy a new car"!!"?

I'm not really saying that a car is a good investment, cause it's not but:

1. Not everything you buy has to be an investment
2. If you're on track for retirement, living comfortably, etc, then it's really no different than any other unnecessary monthly expense

Cause very often in the U.S. you get a lot of respect and perks for doing so.

I remember watching a video about a guy whose dad was in the military all of his son's life. Once the son grew up, he would put on his dads uniform when out in public. When asked about it, he talked about how he liked the respect people gave him simply by wearing the uniform. He mentioned about how since he had been around the military all his life, he knew what to say and what not to get people to believe him, so he could fake it pretty well I guess.

He faked it well enough to the point that a car dealership allowed him to drive off the lot with a car, despite not having lojack on it. He actually stole the damn thing and went joyriding.
