When I first moved out on my own, I was too poor ass to afford fast food and $50 groceries. I had a part time job and was trying to get a second one. Between paying rent and commuting, I barely had over $20 left for food. And I made it stretch, buying instant ramen noodles, bags of rice, plain oatmeal, and apples on sale. For a long time I just guzzled down the oatmeal plain like a duck eating a worm (sugar was too expensive). It barely had flavor and the texture was gross, but I kept eating it. I was a newbie out on my own; it did not occur to me to slice up the apples to flavor the oatmeal until much later.

This was a couple years before I learned that men could apply for government food assistance too (I thought only moms with kids could). I stayed on food assistance for around 2 years until I had better employment and could start college. Plus I learned to cook and bake so the guys I was dating would foot the bills while I whipped up good tasting stuff for them. Funny enough, the practice I got choking down slimy plain oatmeal also helped me satisfy these guys besides cooking.

Yeah, if the guy is gay...like honestly gay...a lot of women will feel more relaxed and open around a male friend like that because there's no potential for heterosexual drama there like with straight guy friends. He won't be trying to bang her at some point and she won't consider it a real possibility herself. A real gay guy is typically "safe".

In some ways, hanging out with a gay guy friend can also have less hurdles for a woman than socializing with other women. He can offer a male opinion that she can't get from the women or straight guys, even you. That shouldn't sound threatening, a lot of times that different opinion will be in the boyfriend's favor if he's being a good guy. If the girlfriend's fussing about something upsetting the bf supposedly did, the gay guy will often call her on it when you're just doing something natural for a boyfriend. Because gay guy's have boyfriends too AND they're men themselves.


Something to also consider is that, if things are genuinely cool between you three, you get to be her boyfriend that accepts her gay friend. That's not as common as people outside of LGBT seem to think. If the gay guy is chill hanging out with you around because you're not a homophobe, that's another reason for the girlfriend to stick with you. I can tell you from personal experience, there's A LOT of straight boyfriends who say they're cool with the gf's gay male friend...but they don't want to socialize with him at all because "ew he's gay, he might flirt with me ew".

Some men can be so irrationally fussy too...

I'm a bargain shopper when it comes to clothes. I mediate that by keeping a gym bod and it works.

I just buy one pair of expensive brown or black waterproof leather shoes for grunt work throughout the year. They're durable and meant to get dirty. They look like boots, but they're actually slip-ons which I prefer.

Then I gradually buy 4-6 cheapy pairs of shoes for $10-15 each. They give me a reason to have fun shoe shopping in departments stores while I'm there for something else. Sometimes I can find a great looking $25+ pair marked down to that lower range because they want to get rid of them and that can happen several times a year. Having the assortment of cheap shoes lets me color coordinate them with my clothes and occasionally replace a pair at a low cost. If any of them lack enough inner padding, I just buy cushioned insoles for $2-3 each.

Growing up in rural farming areas, I avoided wearing shoes with bright or white trim because they would get gunked up by the end of the week. Now that I live on the edge of a city bordering the farmlands, my shoes stay much cleaner and only need an occasional wipe down after rainy days. And having multiple pairs lowers the amount of grime each pair collects.

The leather work shoes usually last to 3-4 years of punishment and don't start to look like crap until the final year. Meanwhile my cheap shoes continue looking brand new because they're not taking that punishment. So as far as my friends and colleagues have mentioned, I still look good without spending a ton of money on labels. Although I will admit the gym results cause people to focus more on my physique and I date men exclusively (who usually don't care about shoes if they like the rest of you).

I didn't bother to consider it, but he was hooking up with a bunch of other guys too. According to him spending time with me was different and causing him to get feels. Ironically his confession convinced me that I was just another side guy for him, so I refused to get attached. Yet he kept trying and got really clingy for a while.

He gave up, but we got some fun out of each other. He's with someone else now (or at least trying to be) and I only see him once in a blue moon, but he still teases me with invitations. I guess he never really turns off, which must be a real bitch to deal with as a couple.
