honestly i'm still not over the idea of sigma being the big villain in a series which has magneto in the regular roster.

To be fair Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter had Apocalypse and Cyber Akuma as the big villains and yet Shuma Gorath was in the game and would easily beat both.

There's actually a few instances of this kind of thing.

Having recently replayed MM2, Heat Man's blocks weren't as hard as I remembered them being. The opening sequence is rough, but you have solid ground below you and no penalty for failing it. Once you get to the Instant Death section of the blocks, it becomes much easier.

Yea I struggled with that section when I was young, but nowadays I can do it really easy. The only difficult I ever have with them at all is that sometimes I forget which of the blocks are going to have blocks appear right above them, but even then I'm usually jumping every block anyway just in case lol.

While I have yet to try the demo, the gameplay has some serious flaws that keep me from wanting to play it. That was the last thing left I was hoping for after the graphics, voice acting, story and especially the roster were really bad.

MM1 is pretty weak overall for me but I still enjoy Fire Man a ton!

I would say Fire Man and Cut Man are the 2 that stick out here as great themes. The rest aren't bad, but those 2 are on a level of their own above them IMO.

MUGEN is pretty amazing. I haven't really played in quite a bit myself though... I just run monthly AI tournaments with a variety of rules for a couple people over at Random Insanity who pick the entrants. Not really anything special, but it amuses us and it's a fun way to kill some time each month.

The 2 things I remember the most about MUGEN were having to have 2 separate ones. 1 for the cheapest characters who weren't terrible done, and one for the fair characters with the best AI possible.

Rockman & Forte is like a better, much harder version of 7.

It has probably the worst music in the series though which is sad. But the Robot Masters are top tier, and some of the most fun fights in the series.

Overall it's soundtrack is pretty low tier among the original series. (Probably 2nd worst if I had to guess)
I think it still has a few notable themes that stand out as good though.

Sprite size and floaty (at least by MM standards). I'd still agree that it's above 1 an 8, but those are the big things.

Also the powers were pretty lackluster if I recall. Mainly because I mostly don't recall them.

Yea I can definitely see why those 2 things would bother people. I do remember the sprite size being a little bigger than need be. The floatiness never really bothered me.

As for the powers, I wouldn't say they really stand out as a bad set of powers. I mean you have your usual shield that surrounds you and spring man's weapon is kinda lame, but I think the rest are fine.

Is the chargeable buster really that big a deal?

Well I hear 2 common complaints about it.

1. It removes the need for most of the robot master weapons in each of the stages. Which that never mattered to me because I don't use them except for boss fights anyway.

2. It allows you to pretty much insta kill most enemies as they come up. This one I can actually see really lowering the difficulty of the games. It may seem like there's no difference between shooting an enemy with 3 normal shots or 1 charged shot, but it can definitely make a difference yes.


Though again, I'm extremely experienced with the Mega Man games and wouldn't say any of the original series is particularly challenging, but the Mega Buster definitely makes things easier in MM4 and MM5 at least.

I don't recall that being the case at all. I grew up with the game so it's possible I know the levels like the back of my hand, but I don't remember this occurring. Also, you have a plethora of useful weapons such as Toad Man's, Bright Man's, Dive Man's, Skull Man's, Pharoah Man's, and even Ring Man's which goes through walls which can get you out of pretty much any situation.

But yes 4 is more difficult than the majority of the other games even with the Mega Buster. The only NES one I think is harder is 3 because of the bullshit remixed Robot Masters.

Well surely I'm not the only one that never uses the RM weapons except during boss fights. However, Se7en and I plan on analyzing Mega Man 4 vs Mega Man 5 later, so I'll definitely be including what I mean about cheap hits/deaths in that. Like you, I've played Mega Man 4 a lot but going back to it after a long time and me forgetting some of the stuff caused a lot of said cheap hits/deaths because I didn't remember what was coming. I don't have that problem that often in most other Mega Man games.

those are also ones without the mega buster. Its pretty much accepted that the mega buster was a bad addition to the gameplay, even though i think the addition gets way too much hate and only was a minor problem at worst.

Difficulty obviously matters, but soundtrack also plays a large role. Like I said in the other topic, 2, 3 and 9 are usually at the top partly due to the soundtracks.

I don't remember what boss you're referring to. All I know is I consider myself an above average Mega Man player and have little difficulty with most of the other games, but found MM5 pretty challenging.

Also this was always meant to have 200 songs, so it would have been...tricky for him to add other games. One would have to decide how many songs from & Bass to include and then remove an equal amount of songs to make room for them all. Certainly wouldn't have been a fun task.

Personally, I'd have removed any theme that's 10 seconds or under.

The huge drop in difficulty after 3 was 1 reason. Also 2 and 3 have two of the best soundtracks in the original series. They're my personal #1 and #2 soundtrack of the original series.

Ah I see. I never really went into this series thinking it was the difficulty that made the classics work so well.

I wouldn't necessarily say that the first 3 games are difficult, it's more just that the mega buster made the series much easier starting with MM4.

The Diveman track is the first that got stuck in my head. I love the level and the underwater theme and the fact that its an underwater level that doesn't suck so much. And the gall of putting 2 water themed levels in the same game (Toadman too) is bold.

I've never really thought of Toad Man as a traditional water theme. It does give off the feeling of rain, but not really underwater. So I guess that's just a matter of opinion on whether that would count as a water stage or not.
