DOUBLE!!=288 (8/10) [Rambly Babbley Prattle Value]: 888 (8/10) [Total]: 35/40 My favorite song from Mega Man 4. Don't try to make me explain why though. Bright Man's one of the lamest Robot Masters. He's got a giant lightbulb on his head, which uses ten million watts of power to blind enemies; this causes a safety mechanism to activate in robots and freeze them temporarily. Considering that Flash Man had a flash that could stop time itself, it's a bit late for the series to try and justify temporary paralysis. Also, it actually stops projectiles, so there's a lot of story & gameplay segregation going on here. Like Snake Man, Bright Man also had an action figure made for him. So let's just get right to the character. I can't think of Air Man without getting the "I Can't Defeat Air Man" song stuck in my head. Original Japanese Version (Subbed):  English Version (Dubbed):  That English version gets way too much hate. The singer kinda sounds like a dubbed Mega Man. Sure, it's not the best singing voice, but it's appropriate for the song itself. The song follows a terrible player who gets trapped in an endless loop of failure: 1. They attempt to play Heat Man's level, but always die at the disappearing blocks. There's a particularly nasty sequence where you have to jump across a very long line of blocks that keep vanishing... (Note: Heat Man is so lame that I don't care I'm using all the text for his level on Air Man. Stupid zippo lighter that burns with twice the intensity of the surface of the sun; you don't get a write-up. All your text goes to a much better Robot.) 2. They go online and learn about "Item 2". The predecessor to the Rush Jet, which would allow them to just fly over all the blocks and skip the sequence. Not a bad plan, I'm pretty sure I've never legitimately cleared those blocks... 3. To get Item 2, they need to defeat Air Man. They can't. Even cheating and exploiting glitches, they die horribly. 4. If they could get the Leaf Shield, they could beat Air Man. So they fight Leaf Man. They can't defeat him either. 5. If they had Heat Man's weapon... but they still can't get through the level. ...that's right, I just explained an entirely different song, which was already self-explanatory to anyone with even a passing familiarity with Mega Man 2, which should be anyone that's following this topic. ...huh. I kinda try to justify it because some people refuse to click links and it's possible someone doesn't know enough the second game to get all the references. Whatever. Having recently replayed MM2, Heat Man's blocks weren't as hard as I remembered them being. The opening sequence is rough, but you have solid ground below you and no penalty for failing it. Once you get to the Instant Death section of the blocks, it becomes much easier.
So, The Megas. Their songs "The Annihilation of Monsteropolis/Airman" and "The Haystack Principle" (Needleman) are very closely tied together. Airman's is easily my second favorite song of theirs (heck, on some days I'd be temped to list it as the absolute best). It is absolute perfection. First, I love obscure references and Monsteropolis is one of the most obscure (American) Mega Man references you could make. For whatever reason, Capcom of America declared in the instruction manual that the first game was set in Monsteropolis, a "strange multi-faceted land of robot-like Humanoids"--that's right, the Robot Masters were merely "robot-like" in the original manual--which was divided into seven different Empires ruled by the six Humanoids & Wily himself. "MEGA MAN dares to single-handedly penetrate seven separate empires of Monsteropolis, eliminating the leaders and followers of these sovereignties" (sic). That may be the most violent description of a Mega Man game ever. But I digress. Second, the song is funny. There's a pun so terrible I won't repeat it and Airman's inner monologue about killing all humans is completely over-the-top goofy. Basically, Airman knows he was only built to destroy and has a slight existential crisis about it ("Do you know what it's like to be built this way? With only the power to push others away?") and becomes more and more unhinged as the song progresses. Going from spoken word narration: Up in the sky Ten miles high A man stands above the city he will destroy. Built from airplane parts, his propeller spins as he thinks to himself… I will destroy these people. To suddenly screaming near the end of the song "There will be a tombstone with The Planet Earth ENGRAVED on it!" Which may actually be my favorite lyric they ever wrote. It is just so goofy: From the way the singer shouts the line to how...well I've already said "over-the-top" but I can't think of a synonym right now. I absolutely love the song. The Megas take on Needleman also explores some of the same themes, only in a more "serious" and "artistic" way. Like Airman, he too was only built for destruction and has an existential crisis about it: I’m not a bad guy I’m just designed that way No matter what I try I can’t help but hurt those close to me And they directly reference Airman's song, going into a slightly inverted version of his spoken word monologue: Deep underground, ten miles down A man stands below the city he will destroy… Stop Needleman starts to go down the same genocidal path as Airman, but actively rejects it and orders the song/thoughts to stop. He then starts talking to someone and trying to find a way to stop being evil, only for this unidentified person to reject everything. "How can I retract these claws?" "Those are your hands, you can't take back the damage you cause" "How can I turn off this hatred that fills my eyes?" "You can't shut down where your path lies" Blah blah blah, realizing he can't change his fate Needleman rejects his very existence and probably lets Megaman kill him, the end. </.< --- g:\>[peacekeeping]/calculation g:\>[solution\extermination] ... I really did not like this song the first several times I've heard it. I've learned to appreciate what they were going for, the duality between this song and Airman, the way it works with the overarching suicidal theme of the four Robot Master songs on the album, I get it. I didn't get it at first; I heard this song, like, a dozen times before I went back to hear their Mega Man 2 album at all? But I get it now...though I still don't think The Haystack Principle works by itself. It leans so heavily on its relation to Airman (especially in the brief spoken word version), that you absolutely need to know that other song to get anything from this one.
And no one knows who Needleman is arguing with. Himself? He expresses some joy that if Megaman kills him that he'll at least not die alone, so that kinda sounds like there's no one else there. Protoman? The anonymous speakers lines sound like him. Compare the lines quoted earlier with part of Protoman's song "I'm Not the Breakman" You say these things you do are what you choose This thing you call your will I call a ruse We follow our path, we walk the program I’ve accepted the machine I am That sounds exactly like what was being told to Needleman. But then, why was Protoman there in the first place? Maybe it's Dr. Wily clarifying why Needleman was made. At least one person believed the voice belonged to Airman (or possible the Doc Robot with Airman's data) because why not at this point? So...whatever. I get why people would prefer this song. I get why some people think it's the best song they've ever done. Taking the lyrics of a past song and inverting them to compare and contrast the two characters is easily one of the most clever things the band has ever done and I have nothing against the song; but I much prefer the goofiness of Airman. It's fun in a way that Needleman isn't--and very actively doesn't want to be. ((Bleh, computer trouble kept me from posting this for a surprisingly long time. Thankfully, the Mega Man wiki points out that Flash Man's theme (or songs similar to it) appear in two other games, which gives me things to say. First, M. Bison [Dictator]'s theme from Street Fighter EX actually samples Flash Man's song:  Why is Bison playing Flash Man's theme? Who knows! Still, it's kind-of a neat reference. *notices the avatar of the user who uploaded that theme* Awww... can I use this as an excuse to start talking about ponies? I ask as though you were somehow reading this in real time and were capable of stopping me? *silence* Fine, I won't go off on that particular topic. For now. Sonic 2006's "Town Mission 4" also sounds like a remixed version, allegedly:  I'm pretty bad at recognizing music, so I don't quite hear it... but everyone else does, so I'll take their word for it. Never been a fan of the character himself. It's weird that Wily built someone that can literally freeze time. Bright Man, I think there's an excuse that the flash just disables robots temporarily, but Flash Man officially stops time. That's just crazy. It makes a bit more sense after Powered Up (where Dr. Light created Time Man who could slow time, then Wily perfected it with Flash Man), but...no, even then, the fact that the villain could control time by the second game is crazy. Crazier still that he never used that gimmick again (or maybe he did, I can't remember the exact mechanics of every Stop weapon. I suppose I'll learn as this goes along.) Flash Man has the most boring Hyadain remix and I'm not going to link to it. You can find it yourself if you care. ================================================== {I'm surprised I gave this one as high of a score as I did. I'm also not a fan of either of the attempts to give it lyrics; Hyadain's bored me so badly that I can't recall any lyrics other than the chorus and The Megas attempt at it, as I mentioned earlier, was bizarrely Hyadain-esque. Hey Megaman, join my side And let me stop this moment in time You'll be mine forever! Creepy lyrics about Robot Masters being obsessed with Mega Man on a sexual level? I already have a guy for that sort of thing, thanks anyway. I think I'd peg the Flash Man cover as the worst of Hyadain's Mega Man remixes (I don't have enough experience with his non-MM work to comment)--I'd take being creeped out by Crash Man & Heat Man's lyrics over the complete boredom of Flash Man--and, were I to ever rank all of The Megas songs, I'd suspect I'd place "Blue Like You/Flashman" as dead last. ...though I suppose the regular, 8-bit, instrumental version I was actually ranking isn't bad. Something I do feel like I have to clarify time and time again. I like a good 95% of Mega Man music, so when I say I don't feel things belong most of the time it's not because I don't like the theme it's just because I like the others better. In this case you have 5 songs that would most likely be in my top 20, and 1 song that wouldn't be.
