Whoa, just got an e-mail from Duckfeed TV's Patreon. Bonfireside Chat is ending in August! It's the end of an era.

have you been following the show lately? not a patron so i don't know why they're still going for that long, but yeah they really sound like they're just slogging through with how much they don't like dark souls 3 and the dlc. it's been hard listening since i really like 3, too! i get where they're coming from most of the time, but boy do they get nitpicky in these last couple of episodes. it's expected because obviously the little things get magnified when your emotions are already heightened.

so yeah i can only imagine them just replaying dark souls 1 for the show to go on for that much longer. it would be nice to hear them happy again haha.

the living failures fight looks amazing, has amazing music, and is that exclamation point to the lore of one of the best areas in the series. it also has that really cool summon attack. not really that interesting or exciting a fight itself mechanically, but i think those other points keep it from being in the bottom tier.

zelda
edith finch

kimmy

games i'm playing:
overwatch

yup

also, persona 5's real pacing problems are in the last third of the game, not the beginning!

4 is still the best of the 3 i've played. i find that these games are at their strongest when they focus on the small, personal stories instead of directly tackling ~big topics~. 5 does more of the latter than the former. the clunky localization of this entry in particular and the shonen trappings of the series highlight that weakness,

sotc is a top 10 game for me. ico is a damn good game.

the last guardian didn't do much for me, unfortunately, and i was looking forward to it, too. like, i totally appreciate the craftsmanship behind it all. it's just that i couldn't help but see that craftsmanship, but not connect with it.

all the "emotional" scenes i recognize as well done. the set pieces look great. the cinematography is superb. the plot is fine. trico is a magnificent beast, had zero problems with him, and is clearly the best thing in the game. i respect the reversal of the escort mission conceit. still didn't touch me the way sotc and ico did.

oh and yeah controls and camera aren't great. the decision to have way more uncharted-like moments let the game fall to the same problems that series has where making a mistake, dying, and having to repeat a whole section just sucks all tension and excitement.

nope

if i know i'm close to beating a game, i'll beat it.

i have dropped games early or midway through, though.

i think i got a third into mega man legends 2, but then we got a ps2 and my brothers and i basically abandoned our ps1.

pretty sure i was over halfway through suikoden v, but then our ps2 broke and didn't get it repaired until months later, loaded up my only save, and had zero clue on what i was doing or what to do next. didn't feel like starting over so i just moved on.

got 50 hours into dragon age inquisition and had to stop to play persona 5. going back to that, with plans on mainlining it so i don't spend another 50 hours.

thank god for the thieves guild since it tipped me off to this fact. i started to wonder why the SQUAD wasn't showing up for s link hangouts anymore while everybody else in the city was still available. looked at the thieves' guild, saw people were hanging out with the rest of the phantom thieves, and just pieced it from there. i wouldn't have been able to max out ann's link and get active support for futaba if i hadn't done that.

i've avoided all these topics out of fear of spoilers, but now that i've beaten the game after 110 hours, time for me to serve up these extremely hot takes with zero reflection and the most minimal influence from the community (literally finished the game at 3am and went to sleep right after)

makoto the best i can now say yasssss queen without a hint of irony

ann had a promising start but man did she get pushed aside halfway through

y'all need to lay off ryuji he might be the realest character in the main cast. tarukaja and charge made him essential in wiping off chunks of health of bosses and strong enemies in the very late game.

also lay off mishima what a lovable loser he is and i wouldn't be surprised if a good deal of haters see too much of themselves in him

haru is a good girl that i somehow managed to max her s link almost immediately. her archetype is rankling, but she rose above that with her interesting confidant arc. those veggies are great, too. also goddamn she was right there with ryuji in destroying bosses in the final couple of runs with her gun skills.

i really wish i had maxed out yusuke's s link because what a goofy bastard he turned out to be. he was also my biggest damage dealer for most of the mid-game, with mind slice as my go-to crowd control for enemies i didn't have the right spells for.

i also wish i could have spent more time with futaba, but she's cool and wacky. always appreciated her active support in battle.

morgana is all over the place for me. i think in the end i like him well enough, but even though i'm not that big a fan of aigis or teddie, they're more fully formed characters and just more memorable.

kawakami and takemi are great.

feel genuinely bad that i maxed out guts too late to see the final parts of iwai's story, especially after leaving it on that note and what he says to you when you say goodbye to him. untouchable's music is probably top 3 for me, too! didn't think that would be the case with how weird it starts, but i guess that's part of its charm.

that first skill you get from the tower arcana is p good, but did anybody here actually spend time with that link afterwards on their first playthrough?

main battle music for 3 and 4 are amazing, but man i think 5 might be my favorite now,

palace rankings - 6 > 7 > 2 > 1 > 4 > 5 > 3

4 is still the best, but the absolutely excellent style of 5, its dungeon crawling actually being good, and all the qol improvements make it better than 3

persona is at its best when tackling its themes through its character interactions (which is why 4 is still tops) and can be at its worst when it tries to take them head on through that tired lens of shounen anime with big words in big scenes. 5 is okay with the former but totally lays bare its juvenile take on ~social issues~, which is a fine take on its own considering the target audience, but personally i am starting to expect more from games when they decide to lean into ~social issues~.

good game that i think i might have stressed myself too much over the last stretch because i need to write a review of sorts for it within the month! beat 3 in 80 and 4 in 90, and i played those in a way more relaxed pace over a handful of months each, while i had to get through this, which happens to be the longest one, in 3 weeks. there were actual points in the final third of the game that i was wishing it'd wrap up soon, and i never felt that for 3 and 4. the clunky writing (hey localization) at times really stretched some scenes too. case in point, all the explanation for the "twist" after palace 6 jesus fucking christ i get it game. so over nerds fighting over the smallest details on how convoluted plots make sense that the game indulging that was the worst.

okay i'm done now i need to get to work.

i got back into gaming in a big way in 2013 after passively interacting with it through old ps2 games and a handful of handheld/mobile games. felt like the best time for me, as i really enjoyed most of the big releases too.

the last of us is my personal goat. i think you'll like it. it's a great supplement to the walking dead s1!

there are a couple of reasons bioshock infinite slipped away. it came out early in the year, tlou (rightly) stole its thunder in the narrative department, and it also got (rightly) shredded by games critics soon after the gushing from the mainstream games press ended.

i sorta agree with how gta v doesn't seem to have as much cultural cache as other big games from the past generation, but i dunno there has to be something significant about it when it continues to sell, as you say, a quadrillion copies. with that many people playing it, there's gotta be an impact on a mass scale. i think we'll probably see its influence more when red dead redemption 2 comes out and we know how its online multiplayer works.

forest of the fallen giants would've easily made top 10 if it didn't look so goddamn ugly. great sprawling level design with some neat enemy encounters and architecture that hints at a vast world with a storied past, bolstered by the fact that the latter half of the game revisits it and pays off those lore signals.

i have never played half life

should i start with black mesa? would that be weird?

i played half-life almost a decade after its release and still had a great time with it. definitely lives up to its reputation. last i heard about black mesa was that it's not even complete. granted, the last parts of half-life are its weakest, but i think its ending is worth going through those final areas!

i was planning on playing a lot of persona 5 this sunday, but a bad headache, a sore throat, dark souls 3 dlc, and this article i'm finishing up ranking all 5 souls game were in the way. taking a sick leave today to recover, and by that i mean play a ton of persona 5!

i fucking adore the friede/ariandel fight. i mastered the first phase to the point that i wasn't getting hit. i also had a really good strategy to get through the second phase without using too many flasks.

and just the presentation for that entire fight is breathtaking. the music for the first phase alone gives me chills.

definitely one of my favorite boss battles.

you know who's hard? the other two bosses in the dlc. cannot fuck up against those two. i do think i would have already killed the final required boss if this were on base ng and not ng+2. gotten it down multiple times to a fourth of the life bar left. i really like it though! should be high up my personal rankings once it's all said and done.

i think a lot of people got intimidated by the 2v1 and the second phase where the prince has resistances to just about everything. that includes me my first time through!

but yeah, the long wind-ups, the small health pool of phase 1, and the lack of fast, punishing moves for just getting under the boss puts it round the mid tier in terms of difficulty for me.
