Well, what is it?

It's the second of the two DLCs for the final chapter in the Dark Souls trilogy, and probably the last totally new bit of Souls content we're getting until FROM inevitably decides to resurrect it for the next gen.

I've played about an hour of it already earlier, and it's shaping up to be a grand ol' time. Here's hoping my SL85 crystal estoc-wielding mage can get through all of it! I'll be posting the occasional update here, and from what I've heard about this DLC's length, I will probably have more than a couple of thoughts as I progress. Will definitely be running through it again with my SL125 STR-build knight that is also The Lord of Hollows to see how that plays out in the lore.

Anyone else getting in on the final farewell of this industry-influencing series now? Share your thoughts! Just spoiler bar spoilers since it just released. I won't be reading them until after I'm done myself, but I'm sure others will appreciate the opinions!

We're doing Bloodborne next, aren't we? To give everyone more time to digest The Ringed City? Speaking of which, I'll be playing Bloodborne DLC later to prep for the release of the FINAL DARK SOULS CONTENT EVER. Typing it out like that is making me feel all nostalgic, and I only got into the series late into 2015!

If anyone else is getting wistful about Souls and wants to help me take down Ludwig and co., I'll be setting up a password for jolly cooperation!

DS2 isn't bad. Just not as good as the other games. It's one of the best franchises in gaming.

i was actually ready to call ds2 mediocre my first time through before i got to drangleic castle. i was definitely ready to be done with it. but then s*** got real and it became real good. then i played all the dlc before finishing it and it became great!

replayed the whole thing twice to get the platinum trophy soon afterwards, and i learned to appreciate the first half of the game more.

still the "worst" entry in the series, but it's better than a lot of other games!

anyone who thinks dark souls 2 is easier than dark souls 1 just hasn't played dark souls 1 recently. it's waaaaaaay easier than the other souls games. most likely you just got better by the time souls 2 came out.

i should have clarified! when i said it was the easiest, it was for my first time through the game compared to my first times through all the other games. i replayed dark souls 1 after, and yeah, it's definitely easier.

and of course, given all my experience now, demon's souls is the easiest simply because the design is the most primitive in the series.

i'm not ready to totally dismiss dark souls 2's encounter design completely, but the game definitely employs the strategy of overwhelming you with numerous enemies at once that come at you from all angles and aggro from a very far distance a bit too much, and i say that having only played scholar where it's supposed to have been improved. no man's wharf, harvest valley, earthen peak, iron keep, and parts of the forest of fallen giants, brightstone cove, and drangleic castle are egregious in that aspect.

DS2 definitely makes the tracking incredibly obvious that it looks awkward as f***, but i see that as more of the game lacking in the animation polish department than bad game design.

it was never a problem for me either, as ds2 was the easiest game in the franchise for me. only darklurker and the some of the dlc proved to be a challenge, and it certainly wasn't because of the tracking.

i only got to play me3 mp years and years and years after its release. it was still fun. that gif looks cool. charge stays winning. andromeda will be eventually played later so i can do cool s*** like that as a hybrid adept/vanguard badass. i also just cannot believe how so many people played through the entire original trilogy as just a soldier with how painfully average the shooting is in those games and how fun it is to use all the tech/biotic powers.

as for the whole presentation issue with andromeda, it really is bad, especially now that i've put 30+ hours into dragon age inquisition. that game has its fair share of jank and stiffness like all the other modern bioware games, but at least the people there look like they actually have life behind their eyes and the models have a great level of polish. it's a real looker, unlike andromeda which somehow looks old.

made a whole 2016 goty topic with write-ups that ranked all the 2016 games i beat. here's the list in the order rankings should always be presented as:

21. Asemblance
20. Abzû
19. Bound
18. Virginia
17. The Last Guardian
16. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
15. Salt and Sanctuary
14. Dishonored
13. Firewatch
12. Oxenfree
11. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
10. Hyper Light Drifter
9. Darkest Dungeon
8. Doom
7. Inside
6. Titanfall 2
5. Furi
4. Hitman
3. Dark Souls III
2. The Witness
1. Overwatch

got to diamond with my alt account in overwatch just recently like i thought i always deserved to be in so i like to think that game's hold on me has loosened to the point that i can play other games more.

been replaying bloodborne in spurts because of the return to yharnam event. that game is still intensely atmospheric and stylish. still love it.

now that i have at the very least a laptop that can run old games, i'm looking forward to finally being able to play all these small pc-exclusive indie games like krz, valhalla, and spaceport janitor.

all the talk about gwyn being easy because of parrying always has me the tiniest bit salty because i didn't know about that at all when i first beat the game. had a dex build then and always two-handed my weapons without ever really learning how to parry. just trying to dodge roll that entire fight was incredibly hard because he barely let up, and he'd destroy me in 3-4 hits. so that whole lore perspective of him being this pathetic shell of a god was totally lost on me too, because he kicked my ass for almost 2 hours straight before i eventually just got extremely good at dodging every attack and poking him at every opportunity to the point that i barely got hit by the time i beat him. learning later on after going online that the one trick was parrying and doing just that on my ng+ run was partly cathartic and partly infuriating.

so yeah in the spirit of all this saltiness, props to you if you legit figured out parrying him was the key all by yourself, but if you looked it up or got told that strategy because you also never parried regularly before that fight, raspberry sounds to you!

currently going through dark souls 2 because of the return to drangleic event so most things will be fresh in my mind for that ranking! probably not going to finish it though since there'll be a return to bloodborne event starting this weekend, and i actually love that game unlike this one which is just "pretty good".

also, wow didn't know i was such an outlier with darkroot garden. it feels like just a lot of narrow hallways with wide spaces to me, and only the stone guardians make for interesting combat encounters. the npc covenant members are neat the first time through, but not at all engaging the nth time around, especially after grinding them multiple times.

got to try the switch at a friend's place. joycons feel nice in my tiny asian hands. snipperclips demo is neat. don't know why my friend bought 1-2 switch instead of that.

zelda looks good. very seriously considering buying the wii u version since he's down with lending me his wii u while he plays on the switch. also my chance to finally play the bayonetta games too!

oh but yes the desyncing issue is real. apparently my friend died multiple times already playing zelda because of it. he was even having some problems while i was there. that sucks.

you can definitely beat the game just mainlining it without doing any exploration. finding keycards is never as demanding as finding every collectible and upgrade. the combat encounters get even better with your arsenal growing and more advanced enemies showing up. the writing holds up throughout the whole game. there are some real good moments later on too. i think it's worth finishing!

Exploring is really not very fun and it's mostly running around corridors and doing poor FPS platforming. There's a lot of loading time elevators that break up the flow - actually, everything about exploring breaks up the flow. I basically want to never stop shooting things in Doom and this part of the game feels like padding. You have to explore for a lot of powerups so I'm also kinda forced to do it.

completely disagree with this since i enjoyed the exploration and i think the platforming here actually feels great, especially with the mantling and the double jump. the complexity of the level design is shown off through the exploration, and i always felt clever about finding upgrades and secrets. sure, it's not the most aesthetically pleasing game, but going through every nook and cranny is almost always rewarding, and the easter eggs are just cool. didn't think i'd actually platinum this game, but i did!

but of course, the game does end up losing steam in that regard later on. that might be very good news for you though!

shovel knight is another one of those games that i can see from a detached pov that it's a very well designed game with amazing production value but it just never clicked with me.

it's the weekend so after somehow bungling this week's hitman elusive target so hard for a reason i can't understand, i sunk about another 5 hours into dragon age inquisition. starting to get more party members now after doing most of the "sidequests" in the hinterlands. i like sera and vivienne from what i've seen of them so far, but i have a feeling sera grinds a lot of people's gears. her speech actually makes me pay attention because so far the game has been sorta plain in its dialogue. can't wait to get to iron bull (i can because oh right dark souls 2 restart day)

spent about 2 hours last night trying to perfect a method to get to the suite where the elusive target is in hitman. after multiple frustrating restarts (you can do that as long as you haven't started doing any of the objectives), i looked up the one disguise that would allow me to get in that guarded area without getting immediately shot dead and the location of the other objective. with that knowledge, i made one last attempt wearing that particular disguise, nearly getting caught multiple times by just winging the entire thing, and somehow managed to get silent assassin.

what a butt-clenchingly great game this is that doesn't give a f*** about your stupid plans
