Don't try and force your kids into thinking they're only 2 genders and they're both immutable. Kids are smarter than people give them credit for. After looking it up on Wiki, it seems due to coed being used as a term primarily for female students. Historically speaking, male students were seen as the "default", and female students, as a result of co-education becoming more and more accepted, became known as "coeds" rather than also being seen as a "default". Nowadays of course, female students are just as common as male students, so referring to female students as coed is seen as archaic at best and demeaning at worst. I kind of figured that would be the case. While people do refer to both male and female students as coeds, I think coed still has that connotation as being a term for female students. |
